UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
-WILLIAM.KIEGKHEFER, 0F MLWAUKEE, WISCONSIN..
Specification of Letters Patent.y Pgtented June 20, 19212.
Application ledjOctober 12, 1921. Serial No. 507,175.
BOOKMARK.
To all whom it may concern.' I
Be it known that I, WiLLiAM KinoKHninn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookmarks, of which the following is a specifica; tion. IV
This invention relates to book marks and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel book mark of simple and durable construction having means for indicating not only the particular page of A that the f. same can be readily seen by the user of the'book.
A still' further object of the invention .is to provide a novel meansfor associatingl the indicating slides with the sheath anda novel; inieans formed on said indicating slides so .as to allow the ready operation thereof and so as :to insure against the accidental movementthereof in said sheath after the actuation of the slides.
lith these and other objects in view, 'the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings: Y
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe improved b'ook'mark in use.
Figure 2- is an elevation of book mark.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through tliebook 'm'ark, taken'on lthe line Elf-3 of Figure. 2.
Figure t is a transverse section through the mark taken on the line 1--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5v is detail enlarged perspective the improved view of one end of the sheath or casing forming a part of the mark.
Figure 6 is an elevation of one of the slides which is to vbe associated with the sheath or casing, and
Figure 7 is'an elevation of the other slide which is to be also associated with the sheath or casing.
Referring to the dra-wings iii detail,` wherein similar reference characters desig` nate Vcorresponding parts throughout the several views, the'reference character 10 iudicates the novel book mark and 15 a book with which it can be associated.
The book 15, is of course, of any size or shape, and has the pagesvlG thereof each divided into columns 17 and 18. It is to be understood, ofcourse, that the mark is to be used also in connection. with booksin which the pages are not divided into columns. l i y The improved 'mark 10 comprises the sheath or casing 20 vand the slides 25 and 30. The sheath or'casing 20V-as well as thc slides 25 and-30 'are adapted to beforined from relatively thin material', such as tellu- Y loid or the like, so that thewhole mark will be of a relatively-thin nature to prevent .straining of the backI of the book and to prevent any bulge in thevbook when the mark is placed th'erein.- f
The sheathoi casing- 20 lis of elongated form and includes the front and rear wal- ls 21 and 22 and the longitudinally extending side walls v23. The rear wall 22 may be pro` vvided at one end or at both ends'withiii-- wardly extending right angularly ydisposed feet 24, which are adapted to engage the 4side edges of the bookto prevent relative longitudinal movement of the niark in relation to a book leaf or page. Thespace beltween the frontand rear walls 21 and 22 is just sufficient 'to receive the slides 25 and 30, and it is preferred that the slides 25 and 80 be 1 in frictional contact with each other and with. the front and rearwallsz21 and 22 of the case or sheath 20.
The front and rear walls 21 and 22 intermediate their ends are provided. with openings or slots 26, so that the slidesA and 30 can be readily engaged Vin .order to permit the sliding thereof withink the sheath or case 20. l o
The slides 25 and 30 are each formed identicallyV thesame in shape and each iiicludes the longitudinally extending relatively thin body having one face thereof y appeared, etc.
provided with transversely extending corrugations or serrations 27, The smooth faces of the slides 25 and 8() are adapted to be placed together, so that the serraizions or corrugations thereon will lie directly in rear of the slots or openings 26, where the same can be readily engaged by the user ot the mark, in order to facilitate the sliding of the slides within the case or sheath 20. It also can be seen that the corrugations 2i' torm'means for engaging the case or sheath 20 in order to prevent accidental sliding oi the slides within the casing or sheath.
Each oi the slides 25 and 30 have printed thereon at each end thereof suitable indicia in order to indicate the page or column and the paragraph in the page or column to which the users attention is to be attracted at a later time. The slide 25 has written or printed thereon at one end, the capital A as at 28, while its opposite end has printed or otherwise placed thereon the capital B as at 29. Adjacent to the A7 and B7 are placed small letters A, B, C, and D, as at 28.
The slide 30 has placed thereon in any preferred manner at one end the capital C as indicated by the numeral 3l and has the letter D on its opposite end, as at 32 and adjacent to the letters C and D are placed relatively small letters A, B, C, and D, indicated by the numeral 33.
The large letters A, B, C and D are adapted to indicate the page or column where the user left off or to a certain passage where the user desires his attention to loe called at a later time, while the small letters A, B, C, D on each of the slides indicate the paragraph or portions of the page or column nearest the'point where the user of the book left off.
In use of the mark, the same is placed between the leaves of the book where the reader thereof left off, and if the book is of the type having only one column on each page, and the reader left olf on the left hand page, the slide 25 would be pushed out until the large letter A indicated by the numeral 28 appears; the letter A indicating the first or left hand page. Now, it the reader left off on the right hand page, the slide would be pushed out until the large letter B indicated by the numeral 29 appears, the letter B indicating the second or the right hand page. Now, if the reader lett off at the rst paragraph, the slide would be actuated. until the small letter A appears, and it he lett oil at'the second paragraph the slide would be actuated until the small letter B appears. It he left off at the third paragraph the slide would be actuated until the small letter D It the page ,is not divided oft into paragraphs, the small letter A would indicate that he left olf at the extreme upper end of the page, the small letters B and C would indicate that he left oliA at an intermediate portion of the page and the small letter D at the extreme lower end of the page. It the mark is used with the type of book having two columns on each page both ot the slides are used, and the large letters A, B, C and D would each indicate one of the columns instead of a page. The small letters A, B C and D would be used in the same manner as heretobefore described. n V
From the foregoing description, it can loe seen that a novel and simple book mark has been provided, which will effectively indicate the page, column and paragraph where' the reader of the book left off.
Changes in details may be made without departing irom the spirit or scope ot this invention; but,
I claim:
l. A book mark comprising a longitudinally extending sheath, slide plates slidably mounted within said sheath, means on said slides for facilitating the sliding thereoiE in said sheath, and indicia disposed on said slides for indicating the column or page and paragraph of a particular portion ot a book.
2. A book mark 'comprising a longitudinally extending hollow sheath, a plate slidably mounted in said sheath, indicia'carried by the opposite ends of the plate for indicating the page, column and certain portion ot a page of a particular part ot a book, the indicia being disposed so that only certain portions thereof will be exposed as the plate is moved outwardly of the sheath.
3. A book mark comprising a longitudiially extending hollow sheath having 'front s and rear walls provided with actuating openings, a plate slidably mounted in said sheath having corrugations 'formed thereon adapted to appear in rear of said actuating openings, and indicia carried by the terminals ot the plate. V
l. A book mark comprising a longitudinally extending hollow sheath having front and rear walls provided with actuating openings, a pair oit plates slidably mounted within the sheath having the outer taces thereof provided with corrugations adapted to appear in rear of said openings and adapted to frictionally engage the inner surface ot the front and rear walls of the sheath, and indicia carried by the terminals ot the plates.
5. A book mark comprising a hollow sheath, slide plates mounted in the sheath, indicia on said slide plates and a right angularly extending foot formed on the sheath for limiting the movement ot a sheath in a book in one direction.
