. IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE BARS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,011, dated August 19, 1873; application filed December 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS I. FLOWERS, of Tarrytown, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Side Bars for Carriages; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carriage containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of said bar upon a central line, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wooden portion of said bar detached, and Fig. 4 is a like view of the metal portion of the same.

The design of my invention is to produce a side bar which shall possess all the elasticity of steel andthe toughness of wood, and shall retain its shape or set while in use} and to this end said invention consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a sidebar, constructed substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a wooden bar, having the general form of onehalf of an elliptic spring, which bar is divided longitudinally and horizontally upon a central line, and between the sections thus formed is placed a strip of whalebone, B, that corresponds in width thereto, and has a thickness equal to and refer to like aboutone-quarter the thickness of said wooden portion A at its ends. The wooden sections A and whalebone B are first given the desired curved form and cemented together, so as to insure the relative longitudinal positions of their contiguous surfaces, after which thebar thus formed is placed upon a steel bar, 0, which corresponds thereto'in width and shape, and is provided upon its ends with sockets c that receive the ends ot' said bar. The spring or side bar thus constructed possesses the requisites of elasticity and toughness, and. will retain its form much longer than though composed wholly of wood or metal.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim, is-
