VENTILA'IOR.
lAZlMlOZ.
Application filed July 15,
Be it known that we, WILLLAM lVnes'rnR and GEORGE O. \Vnnsrnn citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cowls or ventilators which are rotatableso that the outlet always faces away from the direction in which the wind is blowing thereby improving the draft and facilitating the discharge of smoke from a chimney, or of air from a ventilator stack or flue.
The invention has for its object to provide a very eflicicnt device of the kind stated, and to this end it consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a partof this specification, and in said drawing- Figure l is a side elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. is a central vertical section;
Fig. 4 is a front elevation, and
Fig. 5 is a rear elevation.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes main central drum which is vertically positioned and supported by a located centrally within the same, the drum having an anti-friction bearing 7 with the top of the rod so that it may freely rotate and it is properly centered on said rod by spider arms 8 at the bottom.
From the drum 5 extends a horizontally positioned front flue Uwhieh opens into the drum and has its outer end also open and extending into an air deflectingand spread ing shield 10 supported by the drum by means of straps 11.
Over the drum 5 is mounted a hood 12 carrying a vane 13 at the top. and in the top of the drum under the hood is a smoke outlet opening 14L.
Ordinarily, the wind blowing against the shield 10 is deflected along the sides thereof. whereby it creates a partial vacuum in the line 9, which results in the smoke being drawn out of the drum 5 through the line S to escape from the outer end thereof into Specification of Letters Patent.
1921. Serial No. 485,077.
the shield and from the latter into the external, atmosphere, it being understood that the front of the shield is kept facing the wind by the vane 13. ll hen there is little or no wind, the smoke can rise in the drum 5 and pass directly out of the same through the top outlet 14; and the hood 12.
The hood 12 extends over the outlet let and down along the side of the drum 5 and it is closed at the rear to deflect away from the outlet 14, the smoke escapin from the shield 10. The top of the drum 5') has an upward incline toward the outlet 14, shown at T he device will be positioned on top of the chimney so as to bring the drum 5 in alinement therewitln and it is also applicable to ventilator stacks or shafts for facilitating the discharge of air therefrom.
It will be noted in Fig. 2 that the air dcfiector 10 is flat where it faces the wind and its ends are inclined for a short distance and then extend straight and parallel to the direction the wind is-blowing. This arrange ment produces a maximum draftgthe air being spread laterally and its speed. being reduced so as not to out off or strangle the air or smoke rising in the ventilator and issuing from the line 9. A conical or pointed deflector with its apex facing in the direction the wind is blowing would produce such rush of air that its speed would cut the rising air or smoke in the ventilator.
e claim:
1. A ventilator cowl com 'irising a vertically positioned and rotatz-ibly supporter drum having a bottom inlet and a top outlet, and also provided with a front outlet fine a wind deflector and shield over the outer end of the liner andv a hood over the top outlet, said hood havinp its portion which faces the shield closed.
2. A ventilator cowl comprising a vertically positioned and rotatably supported drum hating a bottom inlet and a top out let an d also provided with a front outlet flue. a wind deflector and, shield over the outer end of the flue, and having); its wind-facing side flat and the ends thereof inclined. and
.a hood over the top outlet.
