To all whom it' may concern Be it known that I, BURR B. BLOOD, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Stop Device for Phonographs, of which the 'following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of my specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the stop device or brake for the disc-carrying turn-table of a phonograph and has for its object the provision of a construction Y whereby rotation of the turn-table will be automatically arrested when the stylus of the soundbox has reached a predetermined point in its travel transversely of the record, namely in the innermost or one of the concentric grooves adjacent the central portion of the disc.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for the purpose mentioned, which will be positive in its operation and at the same time compensate -for slight additional movement of the trip mechanism during the setting operation of, or any play that may ocour in the device, without, however, necessitating any change in the general construction of the phonograph or its operating elements; my improved device permitting adjustments to take up any wear or slight 1naccuracies that may occur in the device.
The invention and its purposes will be readily comprehended from the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved stop device or brake and the Co-operatmg portions of a phonograph, namely portions of a turn-table and tone-arm; the latter being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a detail view of a portion of the trip element, looking at the bottom.

at 10 in Figure 1; the mechanism being' secured beneath the turn-table 10 at a point adjacent to the peripheral iiange of the turntable and in proximity to the base or pivotal point of the tone-arm which is indicated in dotted lines at 11.
The stop device or brake mechanism in the speciiic exemplication comprises abaseplate 12 of any suitable shape adapted to be secured in a suitable manner to the top of the phonograph cabinet, as for example by screws which take through the apertures 13 in the base-plate.
Pivotally secured to the base-plate 12 by means of the vertically disposed pivot 14, is a segmental or arcuate latch member 15 adapted to oscillate in a horizontal plane; while the inner o'urved side of the member is provided at a suitable point with an Ott-set or notch 16 intended to receive the extended portion or tip 17 of a brake-lever 18 which latter is pivotally secured at 19 to the baseplate 12. The brake-lever 18 is provided with an extension 20 shown terminating in an upstanding iiange 21, apertured to receive or otherwise provided Awith suitable friction-producing means 22 which in reality constitutes the brake-shoe adapted to have engagement with the inner surface of the depending` peripheral flange with which the turn-tables 10 are usually provided. The lever 18 is formed so as to extend from beneath the turn-table and provide a handleportion 23 to enable the operator to release the brake and place it in non-braking position.
The latch-lever or member 15, preferably somewhere near to its pivotal point 14, is provided with an upstanding lug 24 to which one end of a tension spring 25 is secured, while the other end of the spring is secured to a similar lug 26 formed on the inner end of the brake-lever 18 disposed intermediate of the brake-lever pivotal point 19 and latchmember 15, whereby the brake-lever and the latch-lever will both be placed under spring tension, which, of course, increases when the brake-lever is oscillated into non-braking position, namely into a position where'the tip 17 of the brake-lever will bein engagement with the oit-set or notch 16 of the latch-member 15. The arcuate formation or curvature of latch-member 15 is substantially equivalent to the arc described by the inner end of brake-lever 18 which is held in sliding relation with the latch-member 15. The baseplate 12 is also preferably provided with a lug 27 which acts as a stop for the inner end ot the brake-lever 18 against the pulling action of spring 25.
The outer end of the latch-member 15 is provided with a bifurcated trip-member 28, the shortV arm whereof is intended to be engaged by a finger or hook 88 secured at a suitable point to the tone-arm 11; while the long arm of the biturcated trip-member 28 permits the operator to adjust the trip-member 28 about its pivotal point 29 on the end ot the latch-member 15,l so as to bring the short arm ot member 28 into contact with the nger or hook 88 during .the setting of the device.
The trip-member at the base adjacent the pivotal point is provided with a cut-away portion or socket 30 to receive the lug or bent end 81 oit' a washer-member 82 which is clamped intermediate of the trip-member 28 and latch-member 15. The pivotal point 29 is so formed that the washer-member .82 will be frictionally held against the end of latchmember 15 by the pivot 29, which latter may be somewhat in the nature ot a rivet, and firmly clamps washer-member 32 by means of the sleeve or hub portion 88 which is preferably formed integral with washer-member 32; the outer end of the sleeve or hub-portion 38 being shown offset or swaged so as to rictionally clamp the washer-member 82 to latch-.member 15, while at the same time enabling the washer 32 to be rotated in the end of latch-member 15 through the application of suiiicient force, manually applied, to the long arm of the trip-member 28 which latter is more or less ree on the rivet or pivot member 29. The cut-away portion or slot 30 in trip-member 28 is ot width greater than .the width of the lug or turned end 81 ot washer-member 82, to allow slight play between the trip-member 28 and the turned end or lug 81 of washer-member 32. The play between the trip-member 28 and latch-member 15 just referred to is intended to be commensurate with and adapted to compensate for the slight movement of latch-member 15 toward the brake-lever 18 during the setting 01"; the device, namely, when the tip 17 of the brake-lever enters the notch 16 of latch-member 15.
1n practice, the stop device or brake mechanism is adjusted to the point where it is desired that the mechanism shall automatically operate while the brake-lever is still in braking relation with the turn-table, at which time the tone-arm with its attached sound-box is swung ytoward the groove of the record provided withthe indentions where further operation ot the phonograph is to cease. lith the tone-arm in the posit-ion just mentioned, namely `with the stylus ot the sound-box in the desired groove, the long arm of trip-member 28 is grasped by the operator and forcibly moved about the pivot point 29 so as to bring the short arm of trip-member 28 into contact with the depending hook or linger 88 on the'tone-arm, thereby placing the mechanism in condition to be automatically tripped when the tone-arm again reaches this pointl during its travel transversely of the record, which, ot course, is subsequent to the releasing o1c the turntable through proper manipulation of the brake-lever and after the tone-arm has been again swung toward the outer groove ot the record, which Jlatter action has moved the depending finger 88 out or" Contact with the short armot the trip-member 28. The movement of the brake-lever 18 about its pivotal point 19 into non-braking position where the inner end of the brake-lever engages the notch 16, allows latch-member 15, with the trip-member 28, 'to have slight movement in a direction toward brake-lever 18 and theretore beyond the desired point where the device was set for tripping operation; this `slight movement usually amounting to a ditference ot one or more grooves on the record, so that the brake mechanism would ordinarily be actuated before it reaches the point where it is desired to discontinue the reproduction. ore, that the play between the trip-member 28 and the latch-member 15 be substantially .equivalent to or proportionate to the amount ot' movement on the part of latch-member 15 induced through the action of spring 25 when the tip 17 of brake-lever 18 enters the notch 1G of the latch-member.
It is understood, of course, that the relation between the trip-member 28 and latchmember 15 must be such that contact oit the depending finger 88 on the tone-arm with the short-arm ot the trip-member 28 will not cause movement of trip-member 28 independent of movement of latch-member 15; while at the same time this relation must be such as to permit movement of trip-inember 28 relative to latch-member 15 through suflicient force applied by the operator.
In order to compensate tor any inaccuracies in construction and also to compensate for any wear intermediate of the end of brake-lever 18 and latch-lever 15, I provide a cam member 84: secured by means of a screw 85 to the trip-member 28, with the arcuate or cam surface of the member 84; disposed toward the turned end or lug 81 of washer-member 82. It is evident trom this construction that the play between the turned end or lug 81 and the sides of the cut-away portion or slot 30 may be increased by releasing the screw 85 and moving the arcuate end ot the cam member 84, in clockwise direction in Figure 1, so as to take care nf a greater amount of movement on the part of latch-member 15, resulting from 1t is quite important, thereslight differences in construction, or wear between the members as previously described.
With my improved construction, the brake mechanism may be adjusted to such nicety as to bring about a braking relation between lever 18 and the turn-table atthe exact point or desired groove on the record.
rIhe base-plate 12, at what may be termed thel rear side of the latch-member 15, is also preferably provided rwith a. cam-plate or member 36 secured to the base-plate by means of a screw 37. The member 36 acts as a stop for the rearward movement or oscillation of the latch-member 15, preventing 'the too far movement of brake-lever 18 beyond the notch 16; and this stop member or cam 3G also compensates for any slight differences in construction, by moving the stop or cam 36 in clockwise direction in Figure 1, about the screw 37.
I am aware of the fact that stop devices or brake mechanisms for automatically arresting the turn-table of a phonograph and employing latch-members provided with trip-membersfpivoted thereto, are not new; but the various stop devices or brake mecha.- nisms heretofore employed do not permit of the accurate adjustment heretofore referred to whereby a tripping of the stop device or brake mechanism is accomplished at the eX- act groove desired and it is to a stop device or brake mechanism adapted to accomplish this result, that my invention relates; and while I have shown and described what I believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, alterations in certain details may be made without, however, departing from the spirit of the invention.
1. A device of the character described, comprising a brake-lever pivoted intermediate of its ends and adapted to have a portion thereof form braking relation with the turn-table of a phonograph, one end of said lever constituting ahandle-portion, a pivoted latch-member disposed along the path of movement of the inner end of the brakelever which is adapted to have interlocking engagement with an intermediate point of the latch-member, a spring secured to the inner end of the brake-lever and to said latch-member whereby they are held under tension, a trip-member pivotally secured at the outer end of the latch-member, and means intermediate of the trip-member and latch-member whereby a frictional relation between the two members is provided after a predetermined degree of independent movement by the trip-member.
2. A device of the character described, comprising, in combination with the turntable and the tone-arm of a phonograph, the tone-arm being provided with a projection adjacent to the base thereof, a brake-lever pivoted intermediate of its ends and provided with a brake-shoe adapted to form braking engagement with the turn-table, the inner end of the lever terminating in a projection or lip, a pivoted latch-member disposed along the path of travel of the inner end of the brake-lever and provided on its adjacent side with a notch or olf-set adapted to receive said projection or lip, a spring whereby the latch-member and brake-lever are held under tension and the latch-member forced toward said lever when the brakelever projection or lip registers with the notch or off-set, a trip-member pivotally secured to the outer end of the latch-member and adapted to be engaged by the projection on the tone-arm, means intermediate of the trip-member and the latch-member whereby frictional relation between the two members is provided after a predetermined degree of independent movement by the trip-member, and means whereby the degree of independent movement is made to correspond with the degree of movement of the latch-member when the latter moves toward the brake` lever to engage with the projection or lip thereof.

A device of the character described, comprising, in combination with the turntable and the tone-arm of a phonograph, the tone-arm being provided with a finger adjacent the base thereof, a brake-lever pivoted intermediate of its ends and having a turn-table .engaging portion, the inner end of the lever terminating in a projection or lip, a latch-member disposed along the path of travel of the inner end of the brake-lever and provided with a notch or olf-set to receive the projection or lip, a saring whereby the latch-member and brake-lever are held under tension and the latch-member forced toward the lever when said projection or lip registers with the notch or off-set, a tripmember pivotally secured to the outer end of the latch-member and adapted t-o be engaged by the linger secured to the tone-arm, the trip-member being provided with a socket adjacent the pivoted end thereof, and means intermediate of the trip-member and the latch-member, with a portion of the means disposed in said socket, whereby independent movement of the trip-member ispermitted until said portion of the means engages with the side walls of said socket when a frictional relation between the two members is provided.

A device of the class described, comprising, in combination with the turn-table and the tone-arm of a phonograph, the tonearm being provided with a projection, a brake-lever pivoted intermediate of its en ds and provided with a brake-shoe adapted to engage with the turn-table, a pivoted latch-` member disposed along the path of movement of the inner end of the brake-lever and adapted to have latching engagement therewith, a spring whereby the latch-member and the brake-lever are held under tension, a trip-member pivotally secured to the outer end of the latch-member and adapted to be engaged by the projection on the tone-arm, means, intermediate ot the trip-member and latch-member, whereby ifrictional relation between` the two members is provided atter a predetermined degree ot' independent movement by the trip-member, and adjustable means whereby the degree ot' independent movement may be regulated.
5. A device ot the `character described, comprising, in combination with` the turntable and the tone-arm of a phonograph, the tone-arm being provided with a linger adj acent the base thereof, brake-lever pivoted intermediate of `its ends and having a turntable engaging portion, a pivoted arcuate latch-member disposed about the path oit travel ot the inner end ot said lever and provided with a notch Or oit-set adapted to receive the end ot said lever, a spring secured to the inner end of the lever and to said latch-member whereby the lever and member are held under tension and the latchmember forced toward the lever when the inner end thereof registers with said notch or oli-set, a trip-member pivotally secured to the outer end ot the latch-member and adapted to be engaged by the finger on the tone-arm,r means intermediate ot the trip `member vand the latch-member whereby 'frictional relation between the two members is provided after a predetermined degree of independent movement by the trip-member, and adjust-able means whereby the degree ot oscillatory movement of the latch-member in a direction awa7 from the inner end of the brake-lever is controlled,

A device of the class described, comprising, in combination with the turn-table and the tone-arm of a phonograph, the `tonearm being provided with a projecting finger adjacent the base thereot', a brake-lever pivoted intermediate ot its ends and having a turn-table engaging portion, a pivoted arcuate latch-member disposed about the path ot travel ot the inne-rend otl said lever and provided on its inner side with a notch vor roff-set adapted to receive the inner end of said lever, spring secured to the inner end .of said lever and to said latch-member whereby the two are held under tension and the latch-member forced `toward the lever when the inner end ot the latter registers with said notch or oli-set, a biturcated tripmember pivotally secured to the vouter end ot the latch-member, one bifurcation being adapted to be grasped by the operator :tor adjusting the trip-member, while the other bifurcation is adapted to be engaged by the finger on the tone-arm when the latter approaches the predetermined point on the record, means intermediate of the trip-member and the latch-member whereby frictional relation between the two members is provided `after a predetermined degree ot independent movement by the trip-member, means whereby the degree ot independent movement may be regulated to be commensurate with the degree of movement ot the latch-member toward the lever when the end ot the latter registers with the notch or oit-set in the latch-member, and adjustable means whereby the degree or oscillatory movement ot the latch-member in a direction away from the inner end of the brakelever is controlled.

A device ot the character described, comprising a base-plate, a brake-lever pivotally secured intermediate of its ends to the base-plate and provided with a brake-shoe, an arcuate latch-member pivoted at one end to the base-plate and disposed about the inner end ot the brake-lever, the latch-member and the inner end of said lever in its travel describing the arcs of substantially concentric circles, the concaved side of the latchmember being provided with a notch or oliset adapted to receive the inner end of the lever, a spring secured to the inner end of the lever and to the latch-member so as to maintain them under tension and torce the latch-member toward the lever when the inner end of the latter registers with the notch or off-set, a trip-member pivotally secured to the tree end of the latch-member, said tripmember being provided with a slot, means intermediate of the trip-member and the latch-member and provided with a projection extending into said slot, whereby independent movement is permitted the tripmember until the projection reaches the end of said slot when frictionai relation between the two members is provided and the two members made to move together, and means whereby the extent of independent movement of the trip-member may be regulated.

A device ot the character described, comprising a brake-lever Jivoted intermediate of its ends, an arcuate atcb-member pivoted at one end and disposed about the inner end of the brake-lever, the inner or concaved side of the latch-member being provided with a notch or of-set adapted to receive the inner end ot the brake-lever to retain the latter in non-braking position, a spring secured to the inner end ot the brakelever and to the latch-member so as to maintain Ythem under tension and to force the latch-member toward the brake-lever when the inner end ot the latter is brought to register with said ,notchA or off-set, a trip-member pivotally secured to the tree end of the latch-member, means intermediate ot the trip-member land the latch-member whereby trictional relation between the two members is provided after aipredetermined degree ot movement by the trip-member, said means comprising a portion disposed into the path of the trip-member, adapted to be engaged thereby and the latch-member caused to move with the trip-member, and adjustable means whereby the moment of operative engage-` ment between said last mentioned portion and the trip-member may be controlled.
9. A device of the class described, comprising a base-plate, a brake-lever pivoted` intermediate of its ends on said baseplate and provided with a braking portion or shoe, an arcuate latch-member pivoted at one end on said base-plate and disposed about the inner end of the brake-lever, the inner concaved side of the latch member being provided with a notch or oit-set adapted to receive the inner end of the brake-lever to retain the latter in non-braking position, a spring whereby the brake-lever and latchmember are placed under tension and the latter forced toward the brake-lever when the inner end thereof is brought to register with said notch or off-set, a trip-member piv otally secured to the free end of the latchmember, means intermediate of the tripmember and the latch-member whereby fric tional relation between the two members is provided at a predetermined moment in the oscillation of the trip-member, said means comprising a portion disposed into the path of the trip-member to be engaged thereby, whereby the latch-member is caused t0 move with the trip-member, and means whereby the moment of operative relation between the trip-member and the latch-member may be determined and substantially correspond with the degree of movement of the latchmember toward the inner end of the brakelever.
