Be it known that I. HERBERT C. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flashing and Counterflashing for Roofs, Etc.. of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present improvements relate, as indicated, to roof construction, and more particularly to the construction of and means of attachment for so-called flashing or counterfla'shing, such as is used to prevent the entrance of moisture at the line of junction between a roof and adjacent upstanding portion of the building proper. Thus such flashing or counter-flashing is employed along the junction of a roof with a parapet wall, and around a chimney, dormer, etc. One object of the inventiqn is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the character in question. Another object is to provide a form of securing means for the flashing sheet that will permit the latter to be readily attached or detached as occasion may require. without disturbing the wall or roof. A further object as indicated above, is to provide a device of this sort that will be generally applicable to situations requiring weather protective devices of the character in hand.
Tothe accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawings and the following description setting forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

A retaining strip 1 is a characteristic feature of my improved flashing construction, whatever the particular situation about a roof to which the latter is to be applied. Where it is adjacent a parapet, chimney or like wall of masonry that the flashing is to be attached, said strip 1 is simply embedded in the layer of mortar or cement between two courses of brick at the proper height, or if the wall is of solid cement construction, then itis directly embedded in the material. For use in such location, the inner edge 2 of the strip 1 is preferably bent upwardly to form a flange, and thus more firmly retain the strip in place (see Figs. 2 and 3); whereas if the stripis tobe attached to a wall covered with clapboards or shinglesthe entire body of the strip is left flat (see Figs. 6 and 7). In any case, however, the outer edge 3 of the strip is bent inwardly in the form of a spiral as clearly shown in the figures just referred to above, and the strip is attached to the wall so that this spiral re curved edge is spaced only a short distance from the outer face of the wall to which the strip is attached in one of the ways just referred to.
In connection with a parapet wall, a flashing strip 4, bent at an angle to fit in the corner between the roof 5 and parapet 6, will ordinarily be used, and a separate counterflashing 7 utilized to seal the exposed ed e of suchflashing. This strip 7 will then ta e the form' illustrated in Fig. 3, having its upper'edge 8 bent into semi-circular form, as best shown in Fig. 2, so as to adapt the same to engage the projecting spirally curved edge 3 of the strip 1. Said strip accordingly can. be interengaged with the strip 1 by raising same into position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2, and then swing ing it downwardly unt1l it contacts with the wall, the width of the strip being such as to bring its lower edge below the upper edge of flashing l. lVhen the strip '7 is thus in place, by crimping the recurved edge 3'w1th a pair of pliers or otherwise, in the fashion shown in Fig. 1, the two strips 1 and 7 will be interlocked sufficiently to prevent said last mentioned strip from swinging out wardly except upon the exercise of con-= siderable force; that is, it will in effect be permanently held in its weather position, and yet if it ever be desired to remove such strip it can be forcibly swung back again into the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2 and detached.
in the construction shown in Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive, the flashing strip 10 takes the place of such counter-flashing strip 7, or the two in effect are combined into a single strip that is bent at a suitable angle to fit between the vertical sheathing wall and the roof boards as shown.
Where the flashing or counter-flashing, as the case may be, requires to be fitted into a corner, two strips 1 are brought together with their meeting edges properly beveled (see Fig. 8), and such edges may be soldered if desired before said strips are laid in the wall. The corresponding counter-flashing strips 7 will have their re-curved edges 8 cut away at the ends which are to fit intot the angle, and the flat portions of the strips are bent to form flaps 12 (see Fig. 9) so that the respective end portions of the strips will overla) when the strips 7 are attached to said strlps 1 so as to effectively seal the joint at such corner. The strips 7 may be of any width, and the lower edge thereof may be trimmed at an angle, if desired, to lit the situation presented for instance where counter-flashing requires to be attached to a chimney adjacent a sloping roof. Such strips, as well as the strips 1, will preferably be made up in standard lengths and trimmed to fit on the job. it will be observed that no special tools are required for such fitting,
and that the attaching of the flashing strips, after the retaining strip has been secured in place, is little more than a manual operation. It will further be noted that, as above explained, should it become necessary, either in renewing the roof or because the flashing strips have worn out, to remove the same, they can be turned up out of the way or entirely detached from the retaining strips.
Qther modes of applying the principles of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the follow ing claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.

A. flashing or the like comprising a retaining strip adapted to be secured to a wall, said strip having its outer edge formed with a downturned flange of spiral cross-section, a second strip formed with a curved flange along its upper edge adapted to rotatively engage with the flange on said first strip, and means interlocking said strips against relative movement.
2. A flashing or the like comprising a retaining strip adapted to be securedto a wall, said strip having its outer edge formed with a downturned flange of spiralcross-section, and a second strip formed with a curved flange along its upper edge adapted to rotatively engage with the flange on said first strip, said flanges being crimped together sufficiently to retain said strips in desired relative position. a
3. A flashing or the like comprising retaining strips adapted to be secured with their ends meeting at the angle in a wall, each such strip having its outer edge formed with a downturned flange of spiral cross-section, and other strips each formed with a curved flange adapted to rotatively engage with the flange on one of said first-named strips, the flanges on said second strips terminating short of the ends thereof designed to meet at such angle and such ends being bentto form flaps overlapping the adjacent sheets.
