Be 1t known that I, WILLIAM H. GEORGE, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson and; State of Iowa, haveinvented Ncer-tain new and useful Improvements `in Gearing; and I .do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had -to the accompanying drawings, and to the ,letters'of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this 'specication ed out in the appended claims.
The object of the lnvention 1s to provide a simple and eiiicient gearing more particularlyadapted for embodiment in a Washing machine, for imparting a rocking or oscillating movement to the water Vand clothesreceiving container thereof for the purpose of' washing/the clothes.
The advantages of the invention will be more fully set forth as I proceed with my specification. l

Referring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the ac;
companying drawings, 10-10 indicatesthe side frame'members, each of which consists of 'an invertedU-shaped member made of channel iron. Each frame member includes a horizontal vtop rail 11, and, upright bars 12, that provide the legs for the washing Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June Application filed February 5, 1920. Serial No. 356,558.

At the middle of each top' rail 11, is secured a bearing block 17, in which is jour# naled the trunnions 18 of rocking. or oscillating clothes receiver 19, which is adapted to rock about said trunnions as 'an axis, in a path parallel to the side frame members 10. As shown, said clothes receiver has horizontal top and bottom walls 20" and 21, and
semi-cylindric end walls 22 and flat upright side walls 23, to which are secured brackets or spiders 24 that carry the trunnions 18 before referred to. In the top wall of the clothes receiver 19, is a door 25, through which the clothes to 'be washed are placed within, and removed from said receiver. One of the spiders 24'is provided with a stud 26 which is -spaced from the trunnion".

This cover plate has a hollow boss 32 which rests upon and .is secured to one of the angle bars 13 of the frame, by `means 'of bolts passing through ears .33' made integral with said hollow boss. Journaled at one end-in said gear' casing is a horizontal shaft 34, the opposite end of which is journaled in a bearing block 35, secured to another brace 36 (see Fig. 2)-
that connects the rear end and intermediate frame bars 15 and 16 respectively together. Fixedr to this end of the shaft 34, outside of the bar 36,.is.a crank, arm 37 which is connected by a pitman or link 38 to the vstud 26 on the clothes receiver 19. Thus, as
vis apparent when thel shaft 34 is rotating, a
rocking or oscillating movement is imparted to the clothes receiver through the crank arm 37, link 38 `and stud 26 respectively.-
Fixed to that` end of the shaft 34, within the gear casing is a clutch member 40 (see Fig. 5) and loosely mounted on said end of i said shaft and capable of alongitudinal movement thereon, toward and away from the clutch 'inember 40,` is a spur pinion' 41. This pinion includes a clutch member 42,
which is adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the clutch member 40, before referred to. rIhe pinion 41 is also provided s u 47, .meshes with a pinion 48 fixed to a horizontal shaft 49, journaled in saidgear case. To that end of the shaft 49, without the gear case is Vfixed a grooved pulley 50, driven by a belt 51 from a smaller pulley 52 on the armature s aft of an electric motor 53. Preferably, I hang said `motor from the underside of a board or like support 54, which is secured at one end to the frame bar 14, and is secured at its other end to a hanger' 55, depending from the intermediate bar 16 of the frame.
In the hollow boss 32, of the cover plate l31, is journaled the bottom end of an upright shaft'60, and fixed to said shaft within `said boss isa bevel pinion 61 that meshes with the bevel pinion 47 formed integral with the large spur gear 45. The top end of this shaft is journaled in a bearing 62, on a Shelf or board 63,` located in a plane above the top of the clothes receiver 19, said shelf being secured to suitably bent bars 64 rising from and secured as shown to each side member l0 of the frame. The top` end of the shaft is squared to engage in the gear box of a clothes wringer (not shown) which is adapted to be swung into different positions about the said shaft as an axis.
Associated with the Vlongitudinally shiftable gear pinion 41 on the shaft 34, is 'a clutch shifting member 70, the forked bottom end of which engages in the4 groove 43, provided therefor in said gear pinion.,` The top end of said shifter which extends upwardly through a slot 71 in the top wall of the gear casing has a horizontal stem 73 which extends through a hole 74 in van ear 75 of the cover plate, thereV being a spring 72, surrounding said stem between said ear and the top end of said shifter member 70,
which acts normally to engage the clutch member 42 withthe clutch member 40 on the shaft 34.
0n the outer,free end of the stem 73, is a plate 76 which is adapted to be engaged by the horizontally bent end 77 of an upright control rod 78 which is j ournaled at its top and bottom ends in the ear 75 of the cover plate and a bearing bracket 79 on the to member of the adjacent side frame l0. T e top end of said control rod is bent as at 8 0 to provide` a handle by means of which the control rod is. actuated.
Theoperation of the improved gearing as above described, is as follows: Assume that the motor' 53 isv running to drive'the pulley andishaft'O and 49 respectively. This will through the gear 45 drive continuously the upright shaft and the gear 41 which is loose on the shaft 34. VVhenit is desired to drive the shaft 34 to impart arocking or oscillating movement to the clothes container 19, the handle ,80 of the control rod-is actuated to move the bent lower end 77 away from the plate 76 on the stem 73 of the clutch shifter 'when the spring 72 will act to move the shifter `7 0 to the right as shown in Fig. 5, to cause an engagement between the clutch members 40 and 42 respectively. When the clutch members are thus engaged, the gear pinion 41 which `is meshing with the pinion 44 of the vgear 45, Will impart a driving connection to the shaft to thus rock tlie'clothes receiver as before described.
To stop the movement of the clothes receiver, the operator actuates the rod 78, so that its bent, lower end 77 ,will engage the plate 76 and move the same outwardly, together with the clutch shifter 7 0 which will move the clutch member 42 and gear 41 endwise on the shaft 34 when the engagement between said clutch members is broken.
Thus by a simple movement by the operator, the actuation of the clothes receiver is readil controlled. The gearing described provi es for the proper gear speed reduction between the motor and the clothesy receiver and said gearing may all be assembled in said casing before the casing is attached in place. All the gearing is fully inclosed.
While in describing my invention, I have referred to certain details of mechanical construction and arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be limited thereto except as is pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1; Ther combination of a support, a member mounted on the support to rock about a horizontal aXis,.a two-part gear casing mounted on the support beneath the rocking member, a horizontal driven shaft journalled at one end in the casing and at its other end upon said support, a clutch member fixed in said shaft Within the casing, a clutch pinion loose on said shaft nearlsaid clutch member. a drive` shaft journalled in said casing, a pinion on the drive shaft within said casing, an intermediate shaft mounted at its ends in both casing parts, speed reducing gearing on said intermediate shaft and connecting the pinion on the drive shaft with the clutch pinion on the driven shaft, a shifting member engaged. with saidA clutch pinion and projecting through the top of said casing, an upright rod, journalled on said casing and on said support for actuating the clutch shifting ,membeig and means connecting the driven shaft with said member on the support, and imparting a rocking movement thereto.

The combination of a support, a mem# ber mountedon the support lto. rock about `a horizontal axis, a two-part gear casing mounted on the sup ort beneath the rocking member, a horiztal driven shaft jour# nalled at one end in the casing and at its other end upon said support, a clutch member fixed on said shaft. withinthecasing, a clutch pinion loose on said shaft near said clutchv member, a drive shaft journalled in said casing, a pinion on the drive shaft within said casing, an intermediate shaft mounted at its ends in both casing parts, a spur gear and a inion rotative 4' therewith on said intermed1ate shaft, said shaft intermediatesaid drive and horizontal spur gear meshing with the pinion on the drive shaft and the pinion on said intermediate shaft meshing with said clutch pinion, a spring pressed clutch shifting mem. berassociatedfwith said clutch pinion and normally urging it into engagement with said clutch member, avertically 'disposed rotatable clutch shifting rod mounted at its ends in said lcasing and support, respectively, that end of said rod mounted in the casing having a part adapted when saidy rod is rotated in one direction to hold said spring pressed clutch shiftingmember and clutch pinion out of engagement with the clutch member,l against the action ofthe spring, Iand means connecting the driven shaft with said member on the supportto impart a rocking movement thereto.
3. ln a gearing of the kind described, a gear case and cover therefor mounted on a support, a horizontal driven shaft and a vertical driven shaft, each having one end jour-- nalled in fixedparts of the support, the other end of the horizontal driven shaft being journalled in the gear case and the other end of the vertical drivenshaft being jour-4 nalled in the cover, a horizontal drive shaft journalled in the casing only, a horizontal driven shafts, andfixed in said gear case and cover respectively, a combined gear element loose on said intermediatev shaft and including a spur gear with a spur pinion on one side and a bevel pinion on the other side thereof, a pinion on the drive shaft meshing with said' spur gear, a bevel pinion on the end of the vertical driven shaft within said cover and meshing with said bevel pinion of said combined gear element, a vclutch collar v on said horizontal driven shaft within said gear case, a clutch pinion slidable on said last mentioned shaft into` and out of engagement with said clutch collar, said clutch pinion being always in mesh with the spur' pinion of said combined gear element, and
a clutch rod for shifting said clutch pinion.
4. The combination of a support, a member mounted on said support to rock about a horizontal axis, a horizontal driven shaft on said support, beneath said rocking member, a gear casing on said support,'in which one end of said shaft has bearing, speed reducing gearing in said gear casing, a motor for driving said gearing, a clutch member on that end of said shaftwithin said gear casing, a gear including a second clutch member also on that end of said shaft within the gear casing and meshing with said speed--reducing gearing, a spring pressed clutch shiftin member, having bearing without the casing, an upright actuating rod.
