r ar
saw GUMMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REDMOND F. BARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Republic, in the county of Ferry and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw Gummers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a gumming machine.
An object is the production of a saw gummer including a base having a pocket therein for a die on which the saw rests and having an opening communicating with the pocket for the passage of waste, a spring influenced punch being arranged above the die in a position to engage with the saw, and revoluble means being provided for actuating the die to bring the same to operative position, the spring returning the die to initial or inoperative position when the rotary means have turned in an opposite direction to that first mentioned.
A. further object is the production ofv means whereby punches of varying sizes to accommodate varying classes of saws are employed, the same being removable and spring influenced to inoperative position, the spring remaining a permanent part of the device, while a revoluble element in the nature of a screw contacts with the die to move the same against the saw, and when turned in an opposite direction permits of the spring re turning the die to its initial position.
A. further object is the production of a saw gummer which shall be of a comparatively simple construction, cheaply manufac tured and marketed, easily operated, and thoroughly eficient in operation.
The foregoing objects, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings.
In the drawings:-
Figure l is an elevation of a saw gummer constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view approximately on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view approximately similar to Figure 3, but illustrating a modification.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1922.
Application filed July 17, 1920. Serial No. 397,001.
Figures is a transverse sectional view therethrough.-
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional view extension 6 which overlies the base, the said extension providing what may be termed the head of the device, and the said head is formed with a depending socket portion 7 which is arranged directly over a vertical opening 8 in the base.- The vertical opening communicates with a transverse opening 9, and through these openings the waste passes. The base, upon its upper face has a substantially rectangular pocket 10, within which is seated a tie 11. The tie has its edges provided with openings 12 which register with the openings 8 and 9 so as not to interfere with the passage of the waste through the last mentioned openings, and also so'as to provide a passage for the pointed end of the punch members 13.
The bore of the socket 7 is preferably octagon shaped as are the shanks 14 of the dies 13. The pointed ends 15 of the dies 13 have their sides converging to the sides of the shank 14, and each of the substantially rectangular points is notched on one of its edges, as at 16, the shoulder provided by the notch being engaged by the end of an arched spring 17 which is secured to the inner face of the upstanding portion 5 of the base structure. Each shank of the dies 13 preferably has its outer face formed with a concavity which is designed to be engaged by the rounded end of the operating screw 18. The screw is received in the threaded bore of the head which communicates with the socket thereof, the outer end of the said screw is formed with a rectangular head 19 having angularly arranged openings 20 therethrough, and through two of the aligning openings is passed the removable handle which is in the nature of a rod 21.
It will be apparent that when the screw is turned in a screwing direction the punch will be projected through the socket so that the bit thereof will operate on the saw. The waste material will drop into a slot in the die or bed plate through the openings 8 and 9. By turning the screw in a reverse or unscrewing direction, the spring will act on the punch to bring the same out ofsaw engaging position, and thus in gumming the saw the screw is constantly turned in both of a circular cross section, the rounded face 50 of which has a groove 51 therethrough, and the groove 1s designed to receive thereln a guide finger 53.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, is
A device of the class described compris ing a base having a transverse opening in the lower side thereof and provided with a vertical opening in communication with the transverse opening, ears extending from said base and provided with openings, said base having a pocket formed in the upper side thereof, a tie located in said pocket and having its edges provided with openings adapted to register with the vertical opening in the base, an upstanding member extending from said base and provided with a lateral extension, a socket extendlng downwardly from said extens1on and disposed over the vertical opening in said base, said;
socket having a threaded bore at its upper end, a punch member engaging the lower end of said socket and provided wlth a notch,
an arched spring means for guiding said punch member in said socket secured to the upstanding member and engaging the notch in said punch member, an operating screw engaging the upper end of said socket and adapted to engage said punch member and a handle removably secured to said screw.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
