ATTACHMENT FOR PAPER-SLOTTING MACHINES.

'i citizen of the United States,.resident of Vting paper blanks preparatory to folding and the object of the invention to provide an attachment which will cause the strips orl boxes of paper cut out of the blank by the operation of the knives to become readily separated from the blank soon after the slot is formed.
A further object is to provide a means Ato this end which will not in any way interfere With the cleaning finger used in connection Withthe slotting rolls and knives'for cleaning the waste paper out of the grooves in the rolls.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the draw-ing, 2 represents the frame of the machine, having the usual hopper 3 and 4 and 5 are the upper and lower cutting rolls between which the blanks are delivered from the bed or feed 6. These rolls are provided with co-operating cutting knives and Se and a groove 9 is provided in the surface of the lower roll into which the tongue 1() cut from the blank 11 is adapted to enter. A cleaning finger 12 is mounted at 12L andY isadapted to sweep through the groove 9 and remove any of the loose tongues which may have gathered or accumulated'-therein. usually constructed, the tongue will become readily separated from the blank but frequently will pass through the machine still clinging thereto. Somey may become torn .from the blank and lodge in the groove in the roll to be separated therefrom bythe cleaning finger, but many of them `:vill pass on with the blank and have to be removed by hand at some later period.
To eliminate this objection of having the i tongue cling to the blank, I mount a plug 13 preferably of steel, Withina socket 14 in thegroove and provide in said plug a narrow slit 15 that is ljust Wide enoughlto allow the passage of the cleaning finger 12, the edges of the plug on each side of the Slot forming knives for severing the tongue it withthe blank is a narrow section of the material corresponding in width to the slot transversely until the one part connecting l` and usually is insufficient to hold the tongue and the material together, so thatmost of the tongues will become separated from the blank and drop down outside of the machine or be collected by some suitable means without any attention on the part of the operator. The roll beneath the socket 14 has an opening 16 through which access' may be had to the plug for the purpose of drlving it out of the socket in the Wall when it becomes worn or needs replacing.
In the operation of the device, the blanks are fed to the machine and cut'i-n theusual way and the edge of the plug on each sido of the slot therein will cut transversal through the tongue joins the blank until it is almost severed, the connection corresponding tothe width of the slot in the plug. Through this slot in the plug the cleaning the revolution of the -rolland dislodge any .at the point where 1t' finger will pass in of the cut-out material which may be cling-y ing tongues that have been'cut from the blanks, being nearly severed', in passing theplug ywill usually drop jbflhefore theblank has passed out of the machine. y
I thus practically insure the removal of the waste tongues from the blanks, without in any way interfering with the operation of the cleaning finger.
I claim as my invention:
