MACHINE FOR FORMING PAPER, CARDBQARD, OR LIKE BLANKS Filed March 18, 1929 hrs/10744 M 4 4% Patented Nov. 24, 1931 7 JOHN WALKER OHALMERS, orLonnor nneLANn MACHINE FOR romaine PAPER, CARDBOARD onmx'n Brianne Application filedMarcli 18, 1929, Serial No.
This invention is for improvements in or: relating to machines for forming paper, cardboard or like blanks, and for a device for stripping the cut away tions from the body thereofrl i i 1 V In order to remove the waste portions of a blank automatically, it is usual to provide smallpins on the lower cutting roller which are arranged to be forced into the waste material of the blank and carry the same out of engagement with the body of the blank.
por-
lVhen the waste portions are of considerable size it is found that the said pins are not elfec- I tive as the waste portions catch on the remainder of the blank and slip off the pins.
The present invention comprises means, in
dependent of the formingrollers, for moving a portion of the waste material relatively to the plane of the blank so that the waste portions are automaticallyfreed from the blank.
The invention, will scribed with reference drawings in which Fig. 1 shows an elevation of a pair of cutting rollers of a blank cutting machine, with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 shows a typical form of blank for which the invention is adapted, and
Fig. 3 shows a plain view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings; the blank is carried along a table 1 by a pusher or the like (not shown) and delivered to the cutting rollers 2 and 3 which are provided with cutters 4c for cutting the hatched portions shown to the accompanying in Fig. 2.
As the blank passes between the rollers, an oscillating wedge shaped member 5 is depressed about its pivot 6 by the cam 7 which is mounted on the bottom roller. This movement causes the wedge member to move forwardly towards the contact line of the cutting rollers and depresses the waste portion 8 (Fig. 2) beneath the plane oftheblank. Gn each side of the wedge member horizontal plates 9 are fitted on to which the body of the blank passes, and a space 10 is left in between the plates through which the portion 8 of the wastematerial passes as it is depressed by the oscillating wedge member 5.

be more particularly de- 7 of the blank 348,076, and in Great BritainApril 5, 1922a.
The small hatchedportions 11 (Fig. 2) are removed by pins 12 in the usual way.
As the rear portion of waste material 13 approaches the wedge member 5 in the opposite direction to the leading portion 8, the action is somewhat different, and in this'case the pins 1 1 in the'middle of the lower roller project into the material of the .p0rtion113 and bend the leading edge of the same down wardly out oftheplane of the blank, and as this occurs the wedge member 5 slowly rises I as the roller 544 runs down towards the lowest portion of the cam to further bend the portion 13 downwardly and strip the same from r the main body of the blank. I
Thus it will be seen that according to the. present invention there is provided-meansfor ensuring that thewaste portion of a cutaway blank is automatically removed therefrom during the cuttingoperation. V i What I claim as myinventio-n and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is V 1. In a blank forming machine, the combination with a pair of cooperating forming rollers arranged to sever a portion of a blank from the body thereof, of a cam carried by one of said rollers, and means engaging said cam and having a part thereof movable across the path of movement of the blank to engage with and effect removal of the severedportion from the body thereof. 2; In a blank forming machine, the oombiv nation with a pair of cooperating forming Joim WALKER CHALMERS;
