Description
H. DOBESCH.
CLOTHES CLIP. APPLICATION men MAR. 16', 1920.

UNITED STATES PATENT HANS DOBESCH, 0F LUDWIGSBURG, WURTTEMBERG, GERMANY.
CLOTHES CLIP.
springing from its ends, and upwardly directed handles joined to the said jaws.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing, in which:
, Fig. l is an end view. of the clip, in its normal undistorted condition.
Figs.v 2- 3, and 4 are respectively a side view, plan view and end view or the clip in use on a clothes line.
F ig. 5 is an end view, with the handles compressed for opening, the jaws.
The clip shown consists ofa single piece of suitably resilient wire, a portion of which is bent to form a helical coil a. From the ends of this coil at points a vertically below the coilax'is, the wire extends downwards,
- then horizontally, and then upwards again towards the coil, forming two substantially rectangular jaws 6, having lateral limbs If,
19 and b 6 respectively. The limbs b and b have upward extensions forming two diverging finger pieces or handles 0 bent into ring shape at the top. The lower parts of these last-mentioned extensions are bent so that for a short distance they will lie alongside the coil a. though spaced'apart there-.
from. The shanks ofthehandles 0 rise, ac
cordingly, from points near the central. transverse plane of the coil.
Fig. 1 shows the clip in its normal con dition when not in use. In practice, the divergence of the handles 0 may be less than that shown, the shanks of the handles being close to the coil a. The jaws in this condition lie closely side by side, the limbs 72 and 6 being exactly oppositethe limbs b and 6 By pressing together the two handles 0, as f Specification of Letters Patent. Patented T111136,
Application filed March 16, 1920. Serial No. 366,433. r
shown in Fig. 4, the shanks of the handles are.
pressed agalnst the sides ofthe coila and the jaws are opened, so that the clip'canpfor example, be engagedwith a cloth duponaline i, as shown in Fig. 2. Uponrelease of Y jaws are closed, tightly gripping the cloth the handles the same springcapart and the where it rests on the line, asshown in Fig. 4:.
As the limbs b and?) joining the jaws to the coil spring'froin opposite ends of the coil-,at f l I points vertically below the coil axis, the clip acquires a twist when placed on the lineiz,
the axis of the coil being somewhat, aslant,"
as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, The distortion thus imparted ensures an adequate grip of H the article on' the line, however thin the same may be.

A clothes clip formed of a singlepiec'e-of comprising ,a downwardly directedlimb tionsof said coil at a pointvertically below the coil axis, a horizontal limb, substantially I What I claim as myinvention andvdesire I to sec'ure'byv Letters Patent of the'Unite'd i wire, comprising a helical coil, two-.jawsf joined to opposite ends of saidcoil, each springing from one of the terminal c o'nvolu- I parallel with the coil axis terminating below i the other terminal convolution; and alimb bent upwards from said horizontal l imb,
said upwardly bent limbs terminating 'i at opposite'sides of'the coil, and two handles joinedto said upwardly bent limbs respectively, each of said handles having a shank extending alongside said, coil iroma point near one end thereof to a point near itsjmiddie, and bent upwards from the last men -1; tioned ,point, said handles diverging from] each other above the coil and their shanks alongside the coil, being adapted toserve as I fulcra enabling the jaws to. be bentapart by means of said handles.
