Specification forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 141,838, dated August 12, 1873 application led June 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VAN, of Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented an Improved rlop- Plate for Stoves and Ranges, of which the fol lowing is a specification:
My invention is designed to prevent the warping ot' the top-plate of a stove or range, and particularly of that portion which is situated immediately over the lire. For this purpose I form in one piece or casting with said plate a duct or hollow rib, solooated on the under side of said plate as to stiften those parts most liable to sag or warp, and at the same time to conduct smoke, &c., from the cooler portions near the sides of the fire-space and deliver them into the hotter portions so as to maintain a nearly equal temperature at This duct or hollow rib being, with its openings, wholly on the under side of the plate, and east solidly thereto, is invisible from above, and is not liable to have its inlets choked with matter falling upon the stove, nor obstructed by pots or other objects placed upon the top thereof.

I claim as new and of my invention- A top-plate for a stove or range, having cast solidly to its under side the hollow stiffening piece or rib B having one or more inlets in the cooler portion of the fire-space and one or more outlets in the hotter portion ot the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
