Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 28, 1921. Serial No. 518,225.
T 0 all whom may concern Be it known that than}: F. Mnmrrntn, citizen of the United States, residing at Hicksville, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby Swings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to baby swings, or cradles, and has for its object to produce a collapsible baby swing which can be readily and cheaply manufactured, which can be taken apart and put together with great facility without the aid of tools, and which in collapsed condition'can be disposed in a small compact space for convenient storage, shipment, or handling.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of a swing embodying the invention,
Figure 1. is a side elevation of the swing and its supporting frame in assembled, or operative, position. Figure 2 is an exploded view of the swing, that is, a view showing the parts disconnected; and Figure 3 is a similar view of the swing support.
The swing is composed of a support designated generally by the numeral 1, and a cradle 2, these parts being composed preferably of wood.
The support 1 consists of end frames connected by side bars 4:, in the manner clearly indicated by Figures 1 and 3. As here shown, the end frames 3 have on each side thereof a pair of vertically spaced plates covering recesses cut in the frames adjacent the lower end thereof and having a key hole 5 for the reception of headed bolts 6 which project from each end of the side bars, so that when the heads of said bolts are passed through the upper circular parts of the key holes and the side bars moved downward, the-said bars and frames are locked against horizontal displacement. To lock the parts against vertical displacement, there is pro vided a slot or recess 7 below each pair of key holes and a turn button 8 mounted on the under side of bars 1 adjacent each end thereof, whereby when the turn buttons are rotated into alinement with the side bars, the outer ends of said buttons project into the recess 7 and so look the side bars and end frames securely together.
The cradle 2 consists of a bottom board or plate 9 of a general rectangular form, end
boards 10, andside boards 11. The end boards, as clearly indicated by Figs. 1 and 2, are connected by hinges 12 to the bottom board,,so that when the parts are disassembled the end boards can be folded back and over on the under face of the bottom board 9 in parallel relation thereto The end boards are furnished with vertically spaced plates having key holes and covering suitably recesses cut therein, and the side boards have headed bolts adapted to enter said key holes and to slide therein so as to lock said boards in assembled position. To prevent vertical displacement of .the side boards,
turn buttons 15 are mounted on the lower edges of said boards so as to contact the under side of the bottom board when turned. at an angle to the planes of said side boards.
Th cradle may be supported on frame 1 by means of V-shaped bails 16, which. are hung over bolts 17 attached to the upper ends of said frame. The parts may be of any suitable design and painted or enameled as desired.
It will be apparent from the above description that the baby swing embodying my invention is of simple yet rugged construction, comprising parts which can be manu-- secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A collapsible baby swing consisting of a supporting frame including side and end pieces, said end pieces each having key slots cut in their inner faces adjacent the lower ends thereof and said side pieces having headed bolts projecting from their ends and adapted to slidably engage said slots and said side pieces having turn buttons on their lower faces adapted to project into said recesses and lock the parts in assembled position, and a cradle swung from the upper ends of said end pieces composed of bottom, end and side members, hinges connecting the Patented June 6, 922.
bottomand end members to permit the .end
members to be folded fiat against the surcomposed of bottom, end, and side boards, hingesv connecting the bottom and end I signature.
boards, to permit the end boards to be folded flat against the surface or the bottom board, said end boards having key slots cut in their inner faces and said side boards having headed bolts projecting from their ends and adapted to slidably engage said key slots, and said side boards having turn buttons mounted on their lower edges adapted to be turned into engagement with the under surface 01' said bottom board.
In testimony whereof Ihereunto afiix my MARTIN F. MERIFIELD.
