Be it known that I, FRANK C. Crmw, a citizen of the United States, residing .at-9 Osborne Avenue, East Norwalk, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Soft-Hat-Rounding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hat trimming machines and especially to machines for trimming or rounding the edges of the brims of soft felt hats.
The invention has for its general object to provide a machine by means of which the brims of soft hats may be readily, accurately and smoothly trimmed, which requires a minimum amount of skilled attention, which is of such construction as to facilitate the proper positioning` of the work, which will automatically adjust itself to the size of the hat operated upon, which may be further adjusted in accordance withthe width and shape of the brim and the desired character of the edge thereof, which is automatically stopped in the proper position for the removal of the work upon the completion of the trimming operation, and which is otherwise well adapted to perform its intended function in an efficient and satisfactory manner.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. lt will be understood, however, that the particular construction described and shown has been cho-sen for illustrative purposes merely, and that the invention, as defined by the claims hereunto appended, may be otherwise practiced without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

YIn the construction illustrated (see Fig. l) the machine frame comprises a standard 20 supporting at its top `the work holding and trimming mechanism, the 'moving parts of weich are actua-ted by power from a suitable source, herein shown as an electric motor 2l suitably supported'at the base of the standard. Fast upon the upper end of the shaft 34 is awork or hat holder for supporting the hats to be operated upon, said hat holder, as herein shown, comprising a hub 35, secured, as by a set screw 36, to the shaft 34, said hub carrying an annular table 37 and also being provided with an expander for engaging the interior of the crown of a hat.
vSaid expander may be of any suitable construction, but as herein shown comprises a kseries of radial members or slides 38 (Figs.
3 and 15) guided for movement between suitably disposed lugs or projections 39 (Figs. 2 and 17) formed on the upper surface of the hub 35, said slides carrying at their outer ends an expansible band 40 adapted, as said slides are moved outwardly, to be forced against the interior of the crown of a hat adjacent the brim thereof. Said slides are operated by means of a cam disk 41 having spiral grooves to receive lugs formed on the slides, said disk being secured to the upper end of a shaft 42 disposed coaxially with and ournalled within the shaft 34. The shaft 42 is connected by bevel gears 43 (Figs. 1 and 2) to a short transverse shaft 44 journalled in the column 20 and provided at the exterior of said column with a hand wheel 45 (Figs. 1 and 14), whereby rotation of said hand wheel serves to move the slides 38 outwardly or inwardly to eX- pand or contract the band 40.
The brim of a hat supported by the eX- pander above described rests upon the annular table 37, and the edge thereof is received between inner and outer jaws 46 and 47 provided with trimming means, whereby, as the hat holder and hat are rotated, the edge of said brim may be trimmed in the desired manner. j The trimming mechanism, including the jaws 46 and 47, is carried by a carriage 48 guided for rectilinear movement in ways on a second carriage 49 which in turn is guided for rectilinear movement in ways 50 (Fig. 7) on a lateral projection 51 formed at the top of the column 20, the direction of movement of the carriages 48 and 49 in their respective ways being radial with respect to the axis of the shaft 34 and work holder.
vrfhe carriage 49 is moved longitudinally mechanism at he proper distance from the axis of the hat holder in accordance with the size of the hat operated on, this adjustment `being eifected automatically by suitable connections with the expander, whereby when the slides 3S are moved outwardly to cause the band 40 to engage the interior of the crown of a hat, the position of the slide 49 will be determined by the extent of movement of said slides, which movement is, in turn, limited by the size of the particular hat on the hat holder. To this end, in the construction shown, the following mechanism is provided.
As shown in Fig. 7, the carriage 49 is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed locking plungers which are, normally forced outwardly into engagement with the ways 50, to lock said carriage to said'ways,
by means of a wedge-shaped head 53 on av sliding pin 54, said head being guided in a recess 55 in said carriage and being normally forced outwardly against the inner ends of the plungers 52 by a spring 56 in said recess. The pin 54 is guided in a sleeve 57 secured by va set screw 58 in the outer end of the recess 55, saidsleeve having a notch 59 into which the outer end of said pin projects. Slidably mounted in the hub 35 of the hat holder is a plunger 69 (see Fig. 3) connected by a pin 61 with one of the slides 33, whereby inward and outward movement of said slides is accompanied by a corresponding movement of said plunger. The plunger is provided with a cam head 62 adapted, in one angular position of the hat holder, to enter the notch 59 and to lengage the end of the pin 54; During the major portion of the operation of the machine the cam head 62 is disengaged from the notch 59 and pin 54, permitting the pressure of the spring 56 tobe exerted through the head 53 upon the plunger 52, thereby locking the carriage 49 to the waysO against accidental movement. When, however, the end of a complete rotation of the hat holder is approached, the head 62 enters the notch 59, thereby forcing the pin 54 backwardly, releasing the pressure of the head 53 on the plungers 52, and permitting movement of the carriage 49 in the ways 50. The head 62 is forme-d with a slot 63 which receives the end 64 of the sleeve 57, so that when said head and sleeve are in engagement they will be operatively connected for longitudinal movement in unison. lt will therefore be seen that when the expander operated to secure 'a hat upon the hat holder, the car-- riage 49 will be automatically positioned in accordance with the extent of movement of the slides 38 necessary to clamp a hat of a given size, thereby causing the jaws 46 and 47 to occupy a position at a fixed distance from the crown of the hat irrespective of the size of said crown, and that when the machine is started to rotate the work holder the head 62 will pass out of the notch 59, permitting the plungers 52 again to lock said carriage to the ways 50 until the completion of the trimming operation.
The movement of the carriage 48 on the carriage 49 is provided for the purpose of adjusting the machine for hat brims of different widths irrespective of the size of the individual hats, which, vas above explained, is provided for by movement of the carriage 49, and also for the purpose of compensating for the eccentricity or ellipticity of a hat brim of usual shape,it being obvious that were the trimming mechanism to remain stationary while the hat is rotated about the iixed axis of the shaft 34, the result would be the formation of a circular brim, whereas a more or less elliptical or oval brim is usually required. Tfor producing` the necessary radial movement of the trimming mechanism to cause the same to form an elliptical brim as the hat is rotated, as also to permit the necessary adjustments for varying the width of the brim, the following construction is herein provided.
Secured, as by clamp screws 65, to the carriage 48 are the side members 66 of a frame having at its outer end a cross-head comprising two transverse members 67, as shown most clearly in 17. Rotatably received between the members 67 is a cam disk 68 car- `ied by a short upright shaft 69 (see Fig. 2) journalled in the carriage 49. The shaft 69 is connected by bevel gears 70 with a shaft 71 also j ournalled in the carriage 49 and connected by spur gears 72 with a shaft 7 8 jourH nalled'in the extension 51 and in turnconnected by bevel gears 74 with the shaft 34. The spur gears 72 are preferably of sufiicient. width to remain in engagement notwithstanding the movement of the carriage while the gears 76., 72 and 74 are so proportioned to provide for an angular movement ofthe shaft 69 which is twice that of the shaft 84, said shaft 69 making two complete .rotations during each complete rotation of the shaft rihe disk 68 is preferably of circular shape and is of a diameter substantially equal to the distance between the cross head members 67. said disk being formed with a transverse slot 75 to receive the reduced threaded upper end of the shaft to which said disk is clamped by a thumb nut 76. By loosening the thumb nut 76 the disk 68 may be adjusted into a position concentric with the shaft 69 or into a position eccentric thereto to any desired degree, the adjustment of said disk being preferably indicated by a pointer 77 (Fig. 16) on the shaft which co-operates with a graduated scale'on the disk. it will be seen that when the disk 68 is in its `concentric position rotation of the shaft 69 will cause no movement of the cross head 67 and slide 48, but that any eccentricity of said disk will result in a corresponding inward and outward movement of the slide 48 toward and from the axis of the hat holder during the rotation of the latter. By adjusting the disk 68 the degree of ellipticity of the brim may be controlled in order to provide for a. greater or less amount of roll in accordance with the shape of the brim desired. By loosening the clamp-ing screws 65 and adjusting the slide 48 with respect to the frame 66, 67, the ldistance ofl the trimming devices from the crown of the hat may be varied in order to determine the wi lth of the brim, this adjustment being indicated by a pointer 109 (Fig. 17) carried by the/carriage 48 upon a graduated scale on the carriage 49.
Suitable means are provided for' supportingl the jaws 46 and 47 and the trimming knife from the carriage 48, and for raising and separating said jaws to facilitate the introduction of the work, or for lowering and closing said jaws about the work and mov ing the trimming knife into operative position, said means, as herein shown, being as follows. Pivoted at 78 (Fig. 3) to the carriage 48 is a trimming frame comprising a lever 79 having at its upper end a rigid laterally extending arm 80. Adjacent the outer end of the arm 8O are pivoted the upper ends of arms 81, carrying their lower ends the jaws 46 and 47, respectively, the swingino; movement of the arm 81 in o aosite directions about its pivot being limited by adjust-able stop screws 88. Secured, as by a set screw 84, to the arm 81, is a bracket or collar 85 to which is pivoted a lever 86 the lower end of which swings in a recess 88 in the jaw 46 and carries the trimming knife 87 which, as said lever is swung about its pivot, may be retracted into the recess 88 or pro- .l to cause its end to enter a recess in a preierably wooden bloc; 89 carried by the jaw 47, as shown in Fig. 18, said knife when in this position bridging the space between said jaws. The knife 87 is detachably carried by die lever 86 to permit ready removal thereof for sharpening or otherwise, and to this end said lever 86 is preferably bifurcated and notched at its lower end, the two branches or portions of the lever receiving f smoothing member 94 which is pivoted to a bracket 95 carried by the jaw 46. rihe member 94 is adapted, when the jaw 46 is brought down upon the hat brim, to engage said brim, and, when the lever 86 is swung to move the trimming knife into operative position, to be forced yieldingly into engagement with the crown of the hat at'its junction with the brim, thereby, as the work holder is rotated, smoothing out said brim and holding the same flat for the trimming operation.
Suitable controlling means are provided for moving the jaws 46 and 47 and the trimming knife into and out of operative position, and for starting the rotation of the hat holder, said means, as herein shown, being as follows. Fivoted at 96 to the slide 48 is a controlling lever 97 (Figs. 1, 3, and 14) having at its lower end adjacent the pivot a finger 98 co-operating with a cam surface 99 (Figs. 18 and 19) on a block 100 pivoted at 101 to the slide 48, the arrangement being' such that, as the lever 97 is moved forwardly from the position shown in Figs. 3 and 19 into the position shown in Figs. 14 and 18 and in full lines in Fig. 1, engagement of the linger 98 with the surface 99 will cause the block 100 to be swung forwardly into the upright position shown in thelatter figures, said finger thereafter passing out of engagement with the surface 99 to permit an additional forward movement of the lever 97 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Secured to one face of the block 100 is a rigid arm 102 (Figs. 1, 3, and 17) having at its end a pin working in a slot in the lever 79 of the trimming frame, whereby, as said block 100 is swung inwardly or forwardly into its upright position, the trimming frame will be correspondingly swung, causing the jaws 46 and 47 to be lowered from the position shown in Fig. 3 into positions at oppoo site sides of the upturned edge 103 of the brim of a hat on the hat holder. r1`he arm 82 is connected by a link 108 with an upright 111 on the carriage 48, whereby as the trimming frame is swung downwardly, as above described, the outer jaw will be simultaneously moved into engagement with the outer side of the edge 103 of the hat brim. Secured to the face of the block 100 opposite to that to which the arm 102 is secured, is a second arm 104 (Figs. 14 and 17) having an end co-operating with a cam surface on a rocker 105 pivoted at 106 to the upright 111 and connected by a link 107 with the arm 81, whereby, as the said arm 104 is swung into its lowermost position, the jaw 46 will be moved outwardly into engagement with the inner side of the edge 103 of the hat brim. The knife carrying Zever 86 is connected by a link 112 with a second rocker 113 also pivoted to the upright 111 and to which is connected a link 114 having,
a slot 110 to receive a pin or stud 115 projecting fromthe controlling lever 97, there I side of the said edge, the inner jaw 46 isk thereafter moved outwardly by the link 107, rocker 105 and arm 104, to position said edge between itself and the jaw 47, and the pin 115 is carried to the inner endof the slot 110 in the link 114; and, asthe lever 97 is further moved into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the arm 86 is swung by the link 112, rocker 113 and link 114 to cause the knife 87 to penetrate the work,
this final movement of the lever 97 also serving, as hereinafter described, to start the machine, causing the hat holder vto be rotated and the edge 103 to be trimmed as successive portions thereof pass the trimming knife. rlhereafter (for reasons which will presently be explained) the lever 97 is permitted to return to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the pin 115 passing to the outer end of the slot 110 in the link 114, it being observedthat, at this time, the arm 102 has passed below its position of perpendicularity to the lever 79, the arm 104 has been moved into engagement with the upper surface of the slide 48 and in front of the lower corner of the rocker 105, and the link 112 has been moved close to or slightly beyond the pivot of the rocker 113, so that the parts are selfretained in their operative positions -until the lever 97 is positively returned to the position shown in Fig. 3. During the latter operation the link 112 first withdraws the trimming knife 87 into the recess in the jaw 46 and then moves said jaw away from the jaw 47, and thereafter the controlling lever 97 engages the upper end of the block 100, forcing the same back, lifting the trimming frame and jaws 46 and 47, and completing the separation of the latter.
The pin 115 and slot 110 constitute a lost motion connection which not only provides for a complete closure of the jaws 46 and 47 before the projection of the trimming knife into operative position, but also provides for the partial return of the lever 97 from the dotted to the full line position shown in Fig. 1, without disturbing the operative positioning of the parts of the trimming mechanism, in order to permit the operation of an automatic stop mechanism the preferred construction of which will now be described.
Referring to Fig. 9, the pulley 24 is provided with a facing 117 of wood or other frictional material which co-operates with a friction disk 118 carried by a hub 119 mounted on the tha movable lone` ,y 1 reen to engage or disengage the clutch members 117 and 118 and thereby connect the pulley with the shaft or disconi'iect the saine therefrom, said clutch members being normally held separated by a spring 120. llotatably mounted on 'the hub 119. as by an anti-friction bearing 121, is a washer 122 engaged by a clutch*controller or fork 23, movement of the said fork toward the right, as shown in Fig. 9, serving to force the clutch members into engagement, and movement thereof in the opposite direction permitting disengagement of said members by the spring 120. The clutch fork 123 is pivoted to a bracket 124 (see also Figs. 5, 6, 10 and 11) c arried by the bracket 27, and is normally drawn in a direction to release the clutch by a spring connecting said clutch fork with an arm 126 cpending i'ifom the bearing 31. v

The complete operation of the machine may now be reviewed as follows: The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 3, with the jaws 46 and 47 elevated and separated, the trimming knife 87 withdrawn into the recess 88 in jaw 46, and the head 62 engaging the notch 59 in the sleeve 57 to release the plungers 52 and unlock the carriage 49. The frame 66, 67 is adjusted with respect to the carriage 48 in accordance with the width of brim desired, and the cam disk 68 adjusted with respect to the shaft 69 in accordance with the roll desired at the sides of the brim. A hat 145 is then placed upon the hat holder, and the hand wheel 45 operated to bring the expander into holding engagement with the interior of thecrown of said hat, operation of the expander causing, through the engagement of the head 62 with the sleeve 57, a corresponding positioning of the carriage 49 in accordance with the size of the hat, as determined by the extent of movement of said expander. The lever 97 is then drawn forwardly to operate the block 100, thereby swinging the trimming frame 79, 80 about its pivot 78 and depressing the jaws 46 and 47, the link 108 simultaneously moving the outer jaw 47 inwardly into its operative position against the outer side of the edge 103 of the hat brim. During the latter part of this movement, the arm 104 acts through. the rocker 105 and link 107 to draw the inner j aw 46 outwardly into its operative position against the opposite side of the brim edge 103, and the finger 98 then passes out of engagement with the surface 99 on the block 100, the stud 115 being brought into engagement with the inner end of the slot. 110 in the link 114 The parts then being in the position shown in Fig, 14, the lever 97 is given a final forward movement into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig 1, which causes the link 114, acting through the rocker 113, linl- 112, and arm 66, to move the trimming linife 87 out of the recess in the jaw 46 into t-ie recess in the. block 89, penetrating tl e hat briin and leaving the said?y knife in its operative position, the arm 94 being simultaneously moved into engagement with the hat crown to smooth out the brim and cause the same to lie flat upon the table 37. This final forward movement of the lever 97 is also transmitted, through the arm 127, rod 128 and link 131, to the cam lever 132, causing the latter to operate the clutch fork 123 to engage the clutch and start the machine. When the lever 97 is released the counterweight 133 lifts the lever 132 out of engagement with the clutch fork (this movement being permitted by the return of the lever 97 to the position shown in full lines in .Fig 1), the gravity latch 135, however, re-
taining` the clutch fork 123 in its clutch engaging position. Upon initial movement of the hat holder, the head 62 moves out of engagement with the end of the pin 54, causing the carriage 49 to be locked in adjusted position to the ways 50 by the plungers 52. As the rotation of the hat holder continues, the edge of the hat brim will be moved past lthe trimming knife 87 and trimmed thereby, any radial movement of said trimming knife necessary to compensate for the ellipticity of the brim being caused by the cam disk 68. At the end of a complete rotation of the hat holder, and consequently of the shaft 30, the head 62 is again engaged with the notch 59, and the stud 136 engages the rear end of the latch 135, lifting the latter and permitting the spring 125 to move the clutch fork 123 into the clutch releasing position, at the same time engaging the stud 138 with one of the recesses 139 and arresting the rotation of the disk 140. rlChe spring 141, however, permits a slight further travel of the hub 142, and consequently of the hat holder, in order to ensure completion of the trimming cut, thereafter returning the parts to their stopping position with the head 62 in operative engagement with the pin 54 and in coupled relationship to the sleeve 57. In this connection it will be seen that, due to the reduction gearing provided by the worm 28 and worm gear 29, the speed of rotation of the shaft 25 is considerably greater than that of the shaft 30 and hat holder, so that by applying the stop mechanism to said shaft 25 the over-travel of the hat holder is very slight, and by providing a series of closely spaced recesses 139 the stopping position of the parts, and particularly of the head 62 with respect to the sleeve 57, may be controlled with great nicety. Thereafter the lever 97' is returned to the position shown in Fig. 3, retracting the trimming knife and raising and separating the jaws 46 and 47, and the hand wheel 45 is operated to contract the expander, whereupon the trimmed hat may be removed, and the cycle of operations is completed.
Having thus described my 'invention l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A hat trimming machine comprising, in. combination, a rotary hat holder, a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, a trimming knife normally housed in one of said jaws, and means for positioning said jaws' at opposite sides of said edge, fori projecting said knife into operative position between said jaws, and for withdrawing said knife from operative position and into one of said jaws.
2. A hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder,'a pair yof jaws adapted to receive between them the of said rim, and separate means for moving said trimming means into and out of one of said jaws. Y
3. A hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder, a trimming frame, a pair of arms pivoted to said frame, jaws carried by said arms respectively and adapted to receive. between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, trimming means carried by said jaws, and movable to and from operative position independently of the jaws, and means for moving said trimming means into and outfof operative position.
4. A hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder, a pivoted trimming frame, a pair yof arms pivoted to said frame, jaws carried by said arms and adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, trimming means carried by said jaws, and means for swinging said frame about its pivot to lower said jaws and for swinging said arms to close said jaws upon opposite sides of the edge ofA said brim.
' 5. A hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder, a pivoted trimming frame, a pair of arms pivoted to said frame, jaws carried by said arms respectively and adapted to receive between them thc edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder` a lever pivote'd to one of said arms, a trimming knife carried by said lever and normally housed in one of said jaws, and means for swinging said frame about its pivot` for swinging said arms on said frame to close said jaws upon opposite sides ofthe edge of said brim, and for thereafter swinging said lever to project said knife into operative position between said jaws.
6. A hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder, a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said hat holder, a. trimming knife carried by one of said jaws, a guiding and smoothing` device carried by said first-named jaw, opera tively connected with said knife, and Aadapted to engage the brim of said hat, and means for moving said jaws into operative position at opposite sides of the edge of said brim and for thereafter projecting said knife into operative position between said jaws and simultaneously moving said guiding and smoothincr device into engagement with the brim and crown of said hat.
7. In a hat trimming machine, trimming mechanism comprising a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat, a recessed block car "ied by one of said jaws, a trimming knife normally housed in the other of said jaws, and a lever for projecting said knife from said secondnamed jaw and into the recess in said block.
8. A hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder, a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, a trimming knife carried by one of said jaws, a controlling lever, a pivoted block having a surface engaged by said lever during a portion of the tra-vel thereof and operatively connected with said jaws to close the same upon opposite sides of the edge of said hat brim, and means having a lost motion connection with said lever, and operable thereby when said lever passes out of engagement with said block, for projecting said knife into operative position between said jaws.
9. yIna hat trimming machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder, of trimming mechanism comprising a support, a trimming frame pivoted to said support, a pair of arms pivoted to said trimming frame, jaws carried by said arms respectively, a lever carried by one of said arms, a trimming knife carried by said lever, a controlling lever pivoted to said support and having a projecting finger, a block pivoted to said support and having a surface engaged by said finger during a portion of the travel of said lever, an arm carried by said block and operatively connected with said frame to rock the same about its pivot, a second arm carried by said block, a rocker pivoted to said support and having a cam surface engaged by said last-named arm, a link connecting said rocker with one of said jawcarrying arms, a link connecting the other of said jaw carrying arms with said support, a second rocker pivoted to said support, a link forming a lost motion connection between said rocker and said controlling lever, a link connecting said lastnamed rocker with said knife Carr,y ing` lever.
10. A, hat trimming machine comprising, in combination, a rotary hat holder, a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, and an angularly adjustable trimming knife carried by one of said jaws.

In a hat trimming machine, trimming mechanism comprising a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the'edge of the brim of a hat, a lever having pivotal connection with one of said jaws, said lever havinga bifurcated end provided with a notch formed with a curved inner side, a trimming knife cai ied by said notch between the branches of said lever, and means for clamping the branches of said lever upon said knife to retain the same in adjusted position therein.

In a hat trimming machine, the ccmbinat'ion with a rotary hat holder adjustable in accordance with the size of a hat held thereby, of trimming mechanism adjustable toward and from said holder, means for locking said mechanism in adjusted position, and means carried by said hat holder and engageable with said trimming mechanism in one angular position of said hat holder to unlock said locking means and position said trimming mechanism in accordance with the adjustment of said holder.
13. ln a hat trimming machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder adjustable in accordance with the size of a hat held thereby, of trimming mechanism lcomprising a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat caried by said holder and a trimming knife carried by said jaws, a carriage for said trimming mechanism, and means operative in one angular position of said hat holder for connecting said hat holder and carriage to position the latte in accordance with the adjustment of the former.

16. 1n a hat trimming machine, the combination with a hat holder adjustable in accordance with the size of a hat held thereby, of 'trimming mechanism operatively and positively connected with said hat holder and positioned by adjustment thereof, and

In a hat trimming machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder, or' trimming mechanism comprising a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge oit the brim of a hat carried by said holder, a trimming knife carried by said jaws, means for moving said knife with respect to each jaw and a carriage on which said jaws are mounted, said carriage being adjustable relative to said holder to vary the width ot said brim.
18. In a hat trimming machine, the combination with a hat holder adjustable in ac-` cordance with the size orn a hat held thereby, of mechanism for trimming the edge et the brim of a hat held by said holder, said mechanism being operatively and positively connected with said holder and positioned by adjustment thereof and being `further adjustable relative to said holder to vary the width of said brim.
19. In a hat trimming machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder adjustable in accordance with the size of a hat held thereby, of mechanism for trimming the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, means operative in one angular position only of said holder .for positively connecting said trimming mechanism and holder to position said trimming mechanism in accordance with the adjustment of said holder, and means for moving said trimming mechanism toward and from the axis of said holder as the latteris rotated.
20. In a hat trimming machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder adjustable in accordance with the size oit a hat held thereby, of mechanism ttor trimming` the edge o'l' the brim oit a hat carried by said holder, means operative in one angular position only oi, said hat holder for positively connecting said trimming mechanism and holder to automatically position said trimming mechanism in accordance with the size of a hat on said hat holder determined by the adjustment of the latter, .means Vfor moving said trimming mechanism toward and from the axis of said holder as the latter is rotated to cause the edge of said brim to assume a substantially elliptical shape, said last-named means being adjustable to vary the ellipticity ot said brim, and means whereby said trimming` mechanism may be further adjusted relative to said holder to vary the width ol4 said brim,
21. In a hat trimming` machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder, o'li mechanism for trimming` the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, a carriage for said trimming` mechanism movable toward and from the axis of said hat holder, a cross head carried by said carriage, a cam disk co-operating with said cross head to reciprocate said carriage, and a shaft by which said cam disk is carried, said cam disk being radiallyadjustable on said shaft to vary the extentl ot' movement of said carriage.
In a hat trimming machine, the combination with a rotary hat holder comprising an expander having a radially movable member and a plunger connected with said member lier movement therewith, of a carriage movable toward and from the axis oit said hat holder and having means for operatively connecting the same with said plunger when said hat holder is in one angular position, a second carriage mounted on said first-named carriage for movement toward and Jtrom the axis of said hat holder, means on said first-named carriage for reciprocating said second carriage thereon, said last-named means being adjustable to vary the extent of movement of said second carriage, means for adjustably connecting said second carriage and reciprocating means to vary the limits ,of movement of said second carriage on said first-named carriage, and mechanism on said second carriage l-'or trimming the edge of the brim of a hat held by said expander.
23. In a hat trimming machine, -in combination, a hat holder, means tor engaging andtrimming` the edge of the brim ety a hat on said holder, actuating means, and controlling means operable to move said engaging and trimming means into operative position with respect to said hat and thereatter by a :further movement to start said actuating means.

In a hat trimming machine, in combination, a hat holder, means for trimming the odge ot the brim of a hat on said holder, said trimming means 'being movable into and out et operative position with respect to said hat and being self retained in operative position, actuating means for relatively moving said holder and trimming mechanism, a stop mechanism for said actuating means, and controlling -means operable to move said trimming means .into operative position and thereafter to operate said stop mechanism to start said actuating means, said controlling means having a lost motion connection with said trimming means to permit said stop mechanism to stop said actuating means,
25. In a hat trimming machine, in combination, a hat holder, means forrotating the same, a clutch for controlling said rotating means, a pair of jaws adapted to receive between them the edge of the brim of a hat carried by said holder, a trimming knife normally housed in one of said jaws,
and a controlling lever and connections for successively positioning said jaws at opposite sides of said edge, projecting said knife into operative position between said jaws, and engaging said clutch to start the rotation of said holder.
26. In a hat trimming machine, in com-- bination, a hat holder adjustable in accordance With the size of a hat held thereby, means for rotating said holder, trimming mechanism, a carriage for said trimming mechanism movable toward and from the axis of said holder, means operative when said holder is in a predetermined starting position for connecting said carriage and holder for automatically positioning the former in accordance With the adjustment of the latter, and means for automatically stopping said rotating means after a complete rotation of said holder, said stopping means permitting a slight overt-ravel of said holder and thereafter returning the same to said starting position.
27. In a hat trimming machine, in combination, a hat holder, means for rotating the same, means for engaging and trimming the edge of the briinof a hat on said holder as the latter is rotated, controlling means operable to move said engaging and trimming means into operative position With respect to said hat and thereafter to start said rotating means, and means for automatically stopping said rotating'means after a complete rotation of said holder, said stopping means permitting a slight overtravel of said holder and thereafter returning the same to starting position.
28. In a hat trimming machine, in combination, a hat holder, trimming mechanism, means for rotating said holder, a shaft, reduction gearing connecting said shaft and rotating means, a clutch for controlling the rotation of said shaft, a controller for said clutch, a member resiliently connected With said shaft and having a plurality of stop elements, means on said clutch controller for engaging any of the stop elements on said member, and means controlled by said rotating means after a complete rotation of said holder for automatically moving said clutch controller to disengage said clutch and into operative engagement with said resiliently connected member.
29. In a machine of the character described, a stop mechanism comprising, in combination, a driven shaft, fast and loose driven and driving clutch elements on said shaft, a controller movable to engage and ,disengage said elements, a stop member resiliently connected With said shaft, and positive stop means on said member and controller respectively engageable to stop said shaft When said controller is moved to disengage said elements.
30. In a machine of the character described, a stop mechanism comprising, in combination, a transmission shaft, a driven shaft, reduction gearing for driving said transmission shaft from said driven shaft, fast and loose driven and driving clutch elements on said driven shaft, a controller movable to engage and disengage said elements, a hub fast on said shaft, a disk loose on said shaft and provided with a circular series of stop elements, a spring connecting said disk and hub, means on said controller for engaging any of the stop elements on said disk when said controller is moved to disengage said clutch elements, a spring for moving said controller into position to disengage said clutch elements, a cam lever for moving said controller to engage said clutch elements, a latch for holding said controller in clutch engaging position, and a trip on said transmission shaft for releasing said latch after a complete rotation of said transmission shaft.
