cnosuran.
Application filed October 29, 1921. Serial No. 511,262.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER PAPPAS, a c1ti- .zen of the United States, residing at No.
369 West Merchant Street, in the city of Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to closures and more particularly to a drain attachment for cabinet and other closures.
An important object of the invention is to provide a means whereby water, dirt and other foreign matter may be effectually prevented from entering the cabinet and drippin upon the contents thereof when the top sur ace is washed.
A further object of the invention is to furnish a device of the above mentioned character which is neat and. attractive in appearance, highly efficient in use and which may be cheaply manufactured.
These and other objects are attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which the invention is shown applied to an ice cream cabinet.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a cross-section of an ice cream cabinet showing my invention applied to the closure thereof;
Fig. 2' is a plan view of a portion of a cabinet top with the lid open, showing the ap plication of the invention, and
Fig 3 is a perspective view of the drain attachment removed.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, 5 denotes an ice-cream cabinet having a top 6 and holding an ice-cream can 7, I have illu'strated a cabinet holding only one can but the invention is adaptable to all types of ice-cream cabinets holding a plurality of cans such as are used in soda fountains and stores. The cabinet itself forms no part of the present invention and therefore will not be described in detail. The lid 6 has an annular opening 8 located above the ice-cream I can 7, and this opening may be provided with a hinged cover 9 although any other desired type of cover may be used. The opening 8 has fitted therein at its under face,
an annularring 10 having an integral upstanding fiange 11, the said ring being L- shaped in cross-section. The ring 10 may be fitted to the under face of the cabinet top 6 in any approved manner but I have illustrated it as being attached by means of screws 12 passing through holes 12 1n the edge of the ring and entering the cabinet top 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A rubber gasket 13 is provided to insure a tight fit, thuspreventing any leakage. A drain pipe 1% is shown attached to the ring 10 for draining off any water, grease, etc., which may have seeped under the cover 9 and into the gutter formed by the ring 10 and the wall of the opening 8. I
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a device which is readily adaptable to ice-cream cabinet closures and to all other closures having an opening therein and, a lid or cover for such opening. My invention permits the washing of the top of the cabinet without danger of soapy water, dirt or grease, getting into the icecream can. The diameter of the upturned flange 11 of the ring 10 is slightly less than that of the opening 8 so that all drippings that get under the cover 9 will be caught by the ring 10 and conveyed through the drain tube 14: to the ice compartment of the cabinet. The ring 10 takes up only a very little space in the opening 8 of thetop 6 and does not interfere with the dipping out of icecream from the can 7.
lVhile I have described. the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that it is capable of many changes and modifications within the spiritand scope of the appended claims I claim:
1. The combination with a closure having an opening therein and a cover therefor; of a gutter attachment in said opening.
2. The combination with a closure having an opening therein and a cover therefor; of a gutter attachment in said opening and means forseci'uring said gutter attachment in the opening.
3. The combination with a closure having an opening therein and a cover therefor; of a gutter attachment in said opening and a drain for said gutter attachment.
4. The combination with a closure having an opening therein and a cover therefor; of a gutter attachment in said opening, means for securing said gutter attachment in said opening and :1V drain for the gutter attachopening; means for securing the ring in the ment. opening and a drain for said ring.
5. The combination with a closure having In testimony whereof I. aflix my signature. 10
an opening therein and a cover therefor; of PETER PAPPAS.
