NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. LlNDSLEY, OF WATHENA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EZRA V. SNIVELY, OF SAME PLACE, AND L. E. HEDGES, OF FRED- ERICK, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,801, dated August 12, 1873 application filed May 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. LINDSLEY, of Wathena, in the county of Doniphan and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Flame Extinguisher for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a side Fig. 3 is a detail view of extinguisher.
The invention consists in making a very durable and compact joint of both spring and extinguisher, with the movable arm of the latter, by bending and riveting the end of the arm.
In the drawing, A is the lamp-top, having the wick-tube B. O O are the extinguishers, which may be closed over the top of the tube; and D D are the arms which hold the snuffers, that have handles d d, by which they are turned. The arms are bent and pivoted in the snbjacent bearings a a of a plate, A. E E are springs, placed on the inside of snuffers G G, and with one end projecting toward the tube B. One end of arm D is first bent at right angles, passed through the snuffers G and through the spring E, and then staved up on the end to form a rivet-head. In the rear of the arm D is an apertured brace, F, through which the end of arm passes before it is turned.
The mode of attaching the spring on the inside of the extinguishers, prevents it from be ing in the way, and renders it much less liable to be fractured, while the mode of securing it with the extinguisher by the riveted end of arm D greatly simplifies the construction of these parts, renders them much more compact, and cheapens the manufacture.
By using the brace F thearm D is menforced, and not so liable to break at its junction with the extinguishers.
The application of the plate A beneath the lamp-top A makes a secure'bearing for the arms, and one that is entirely out of the way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arm D, having the end turned at right angles, passed through both spring and extinguisher, and riveted down in front, as and for the purpose set forth.
WM. D. LINDSLEY.
