HERBERT E. HODGSON, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORGAN FREE REEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,792, dated August 12,1S73; application tiled May 3,1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HERBERT E. HoDGsoN, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox, Tennessee, have invented a certain Organ-Reed, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates, primarily, to the production of new reed-stops for cabinet organs, to give a needed Variety in tone. The invention consists in a reed, made of wood or other suitable non-metallic material.
Figure l is a perspective view of a reed with its frame, illustrating this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same applied to an illustrative reed-chest.
To carry out this invention, a reed-chest, a, and reed-frame b, of any approved form-and material, may be employed. In lieu of the ordinary brass reeds, non-metallic free reeds, c, are manufactured, and attached to the frames b by rivets d, and washers c thereon, or by other means, and serve to produce peculiar and pleasing varieties of tone. They are also su perior in power to brass reeds. d
The preferred material for the free reeds is wood. Different kinds of wood may be em'- ployed, or other elastic non-metallic material, such as ivory or hard rubber, and the shape of the reeds may be varied. The reeds, as made of wood, should be cut lengthwise of the grain, and they may be varnished or otherwise coated, to preserve them, if preferred.
These reeds are designed for application to cabinet organs, as new stops; but the irnprovement is applicable, in like manner, to melodeons, accordeons, and other similar wind instruments of music.
The following is claimed as new:
In cabinet organs and other musical instruments similar in character, the free reed herein described, the same being made of wood or other elastic non-metallic material, substan tia-lly as set forth, for the purpose specified.
