Figure d is an enlarged view in elevation of the inner or reverse side oi' the latch,
Figurer 5`is a view similar to Figure i of the Outer or obverse side of a portionV ofl the latch,
Figure @is aV view similar to Figure 5 of `another portion of the latch,
.Figure 7 is a section along the line 7 7 of Figure e, .Y
. Figure 8 is an enlarged section alongthe line 8 8 of Figure 1, and
Figure 9 's a section along the line 9 9 oi? Figure 5i Referring now to thedrawings, 1 den'otee a door, to the inner side ofwhich is attached a lock 2l The lock 2 is of any known type ot construction in which a spindle 3 controlling the Operation oi a lock bolt 4 is projected through an opening in the door, such as indicated at 5,101 connection with lock bolt operating means attached to the outer side of the door.
A casing 6 is provided with a front or outer wall 7, side walls 8 and 9 and end walls 10 and 11, being open at its inner or rear side. The casing 6 is attached to the outer side oi' the door 1 by means of bolts 12 which are Aprojected through the door lrom the inner side thereof into engagement with threaded Vopenings in the inner faces of the end walls 19 and 11. The spindle 3 is arranged to enter a slot 13 in the inner end oi' a shaft or stud 14. The latter is journalled in the front wall of the casing 6 and vis provided with a knob or handle 15 at its outer end. A pinion 16 is rigidly mounted on the stud 111 to lie flat against the inner wall of the iront side 7 and is in mesh' with rack portions 17 and 16 of tumbler plates 19 and 2O respectively. TheV latter areV parallel with one another and Vcorresponding end portions thereoil are slidable in guideways 21 and 22, respectively, as shown in Figure 6. lt will be observed that the guideways 21 and 22 extend transversely of a guide plate 23 that is secured to the inner face of the front wall 7 by means of screws 24. compression spring 25 having an end seated in the rack 17 tends to move the plate 19 in one direction, while a similar compression spring 26 seated in the rack 18V tends to move the tumbler plate 20 in the opposite direction. A Ushaped retaining plate 27 is secured to a boss 28 projecting inwardly from the inner face of the iront wall 7 and displacement.
i ing below the lowerV end of the casing A. slidable plate 29 has a reduced end portion 8O arranged to protrude through an Y opening 31 in the side 9 and is held against ,displacement by oppositely extending integral tongues 32-32f which are arranged to enter grooves 8388 in the guide plate 23 and in an enlargement or boss 34 that is integral with the front wall 7.' The tongue 32 is cut away adjacent to the opening 81, as at 35,'to receive the end of the tumbler plate 19, and is also provided with a slot 36 adjacent to its other end, into which slot, a relatively reduced end portion 37 of the tumbler plate 2O projects at times. The slidable plate 30 is formed with a plurality of laten ally projecting alined lugs 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42, these lugs being spaced apart to provide guideways 43, 44, 45 and 46 for a purpose which will be hereinafter set forth.
A. rear cover plate 47 has the form best seen in Figure 5 and is attached to the frontV wall of the casing by screws 48 or like fastening means. The rear cover plate 47 depends below the lower end of the casing and terminates approximately midway the length ofthe latter. The face of the cover plate 47 contiguous to the inner side of the front wall 7 is formed to provide a transverse channel 49 adapted to receive the end wall 11, and with parallel grooves 50, 51 and 52 which extend from the channel 49 to the upper end of the plate. The grooves 50, 51V
and 52are intersected by a transverse groove 53. Combination plates 54, and 56 are slidably disposed in parallelism in a recess 57 in the cover plate 47 and have relatively reduced portions arranged to enter the grooves or guideways 50, 51 and 52, as best seen in Figure 5.' The combination plates are bent laterally at. their lower ends, as at 54, 55a and 56a toprovide means' adapted to be grasped when it is desired to slidably move the combination plates. |The plates 54,
Vand 56, respectively, have extensions 54,
55b and 56b arranged to project through slots 54C, 55c and 56c in the cover plate 47, these extensions being upset at their ends to prevent displacement of the combination plates. Each of the lcombination plates yis provided with a slot in its face contiguous to the inner side of the wall 7 as indicated at 54d, 55(1 and 56d. r1`hese slots or grooves may be moved in alinement Vwith one another and with the transversely extending groove r53 when the combination plates are moved in accordance with a predetermined plan. It will be observed that each ofthe combination plates Vis provided with a series of graduations on the portion thereof project- 6, as indicated generally at 54e, 55e and 56e. The outer face of the front wall 7 is beveled, as at 58, (see Figure l) to provide a sharp indeX edge adapted to indicate on the scales marked on the combination plates the relative positions of the several combination plates. Y
In order to make the opening of the device more diflicult than is usual in combination locks, 1 provide additional or secondary combination controlled means indicated generally at 59 and 60. The member 59 comprises parallel spring arms 61 and 62 arranged to straddlethe combination plate 56 and being slidable in the groove or channel 52. r1`he arms 61 and 62 are connected at their upper ends by an arm of a U-shaped member 68. The combination controlled member likewise comprises parallel spring arms 64 and 65 arranged to straddle the combination plate 54 and connected at their upper ends by an arm of a U-shaped member 66,. VThe arms of the U-shaped members V68 Aand 66 are arranged to be engaged successively and selectively by the cross ba'r 67 of an actuating member having a stem 68 secured to tlie combination plate 55.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. When the latching device is secured to the outer side of the door 1 by means of the bolts 12,'A
and the spindle 3 is secured in the slot 13 in the end of the stud 14, as by means of a cotter pin 69, it is obvious that the latch cannot be readily removed from the door by anyone seekingl to open the door from the outer side. When the combination plates 54, 55 and 56 have been moved in accordance with a predetermined plan', as indicated by the registration successively of certain graduations on the scales 54e, 55e and 56e with the index edge 58, the transverse grooves 54d, 55d and 561 will be alined with the guideway 53. At this time alined notches 64a and 65a in the arms of the combination controlled Amember 60 will be in alinement with the groove 58 and notches 61u and 62a in the arms of the combination controlled member 59 will likewise be in alinement with the same groove. A 4slight rotative movement of the knob 15 will now occasion Vthe retraction of the end of the vtumbler plate 19 from the recess 85 and the Y dicated at 71, react against the sides of the combination plates contiguous to the cover plate 47 and tend to maintain the combina- When the slidable member 30 has tion plates in frictional contact with guide plate 23 and the boss 34.
