To all whom. it may (iO'lt/fU/"l'b! Be it known that T, lVrLLiAiu Sco'r'r Quin new, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Kensington, in the county of estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Elevator Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in elevator locks, usable on either passenger or freight elevators, and it consists in the con structions, combinations and mode of operation herein described and claimed.
One of the foremost objects of the inven tion is to provide instrumentalitics especially adapted to passenger elevators wherein there are usually found lattice-doors on the elevators themselves and other doors in the shaft opening, these instrumeutalities including means whereby both doors can be opened substantially at the time, by manipulation of the operator in the car.
Another object of the invention is to provide an elevator lock arranged to prevent the opening of an elevator shaftdoor from the outside, the lock of said door being controlled by the operator from the inside of the elevator.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

This application is a continuation in partof my co-pending application for Letters Patent for elevator locks, filed November 25, 1919, Serial No. 340,447, wherein types of locks for both freight and passenger elevators are disclosed. In order that the reader may understand the purpose of the present lock, attention is directed to Figure 1 wherein is shown a passenger elevator 1 running in the shaft 3. The elevator has a door 2 which is commonly constructed as a collapsible frame consisting of various arrangements of bars pivoted together. It is Specification of Letters Patent.

unnecessary to describe this door in detail because it is of a well known construction. At the landing'elz there is an outside door According to the present custom, the operator must first open the inside lattice-door 2, then open the outside landing door 4. It is the purpose or the present invention to first provide a lock for the outside door, and means carried by the inside door engageable with a part of that lock for simultaneously undoing the lock of the outside door and opening both doors from the inside of the elevator.
In order that this may be done, namely, that the doors 2 and 5 may be opened simultaneously by one act on the part of the operator, the inside door 2 carries a substantially ill-shaped receiver 7. This receiver in riding up or down with the elevator, moves upon the lug 8, projecting inwardly from the bolt 9, and causes the actuation of the bolt in accordance with the movement of the door 2.
Consider Figures 2 and 3. The lug 8 projects out of the slot 1.0 of the casing 11 'which houses the bolt 9 and latch 12. The bolt 9 moves in. suitable keepers 13, and has a head 14 engaging the latch projection 15 on one side. A spring 16 engages the pro jcction on the other side.
Thelatch12ispivoted at 17 and has a head 18 arranged to enter the recess of the keeper 19 in the door jamb. So far the operation should be clear. As the elevator approaches the landing from above or below. the receiver "1" rides over the lug 8. and when the in side door 2 is opened the bolt 9 is first drawn over toward the right, causing the liftingof the latcn 12 by reason of the en gagement- 14 and 1", and on the continued opening movement of the door 2, the out side door 5 is drawn along with it so as to open the landing 4.
While the construction and arrangement of the improved elevator lock and door opening device as herein described and claimed, is that of a generally preferred form, obviously modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim 1. In a device as described, a shaft-door, means for locking said door, including a pivoted latch with an extension; means by which the latch is actuated, in engagement with the extension, said actuating means having a projection; an elevator door and means on said door, engageable with said projection when the elevator reaches the shaft door, enabling the concomitant operation of the latch and opening of both doors. 2. Means for locking a shaft door, comprising a casing carried by the shaft door, with a pivoted latch adapted to come into locking engagement with a jamb; adj accnt actuating means mounted in the casing engaging a part of the latch and having a projection through a slot in the casing; and means on an elevator door, engageable With the projection when the elevator reaches the shaft door, enabling the concomitant opening ofboth doors, the initial movement of the elevator door raising the latch from looking engagement through said actuating means.
3. An elevator lock, comprising a casing, a latch pivoted in the casing, With an extension housed thereby, a bolt having a head contacting the extension, bearing means slidably supporting the bolt, means on the bolt maintaining the head and extension in engagement, and a lug on the bolt, engageable to shift the bolt and rock the latch.
