IMPROVEMENT INA CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,709, dated August 12, 1873 5 application led May 24, 1873.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. FUQUA, of Sandford, county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Ghurns.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of churns in which a revolving dash is made use of 5 and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the details ofthe construction lof the same, hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, Figure l represents a front view. Fig. 2 is a side view, a portion being removed.
The dash revolves upon the upright rod or journal a, the lower end of which is stepped in a bearing secured to the bottom of the churn, and the upper end is supported in the journalbox b. Upon the lower part of the dash is secured the hollow cylinder c, the upper end being closed and the lower end being open, provided with the curvilinear flanges or beaters d and openings e, which are so arranged that when the dash is revolved the cream will be forced within the cylinder and under the bottom thereof, as indicated by the arrows. f designates the flat part of the dash, the principal oflice of which is to collect the particles of butter when the action of the dash is reversed.
The dash is operated by the crown-wheel 7c, which en gages with the bevel-gear m attached to the top of the rod a. Upright strips h may be secured to the sides of the churn, to cause a more thorough agitation of the cream.
The cover ofthe churn consists of two parts, to 011e of which is attached the standard o and the crank-shaped rod p, which catches under the projections s, and Vis held in position by the spring a. The said rod p clamps the cover rmly in position when the operation of churn-
