IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES FOR ARTESIAN WELLS, 84c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,708, dated August 12, 1873 application filed July 12, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnrn' FLEMING, of Shamburg, in the county of Venango, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Valve for Artesian Wells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of the whole, Fig. 2 a perspective of the valve itself, and (Pig. 3 a horizontal section of tubes in cyliner. My invention relates to that class of valves which are used in pumps at the bottom of Artesian wells, the valve in consideration being the lower or standing valve. The object of this invention is to construct a valve which will perform an equal amount of work with those now in use, and at the same time free itself from. any dirt or other obstructions that may clog its workings.

For this purpose, to the ordinary working barrel of a pump is attached a hollow cylinder, A, having, at a short distance from its base, tubesTT, joining each other in the center of the cylinder and terminating in its outer circumference. At the point of intersection of these tubes a hollow screw, S, openinginto the tubes T T is provided for the reception of the bottom or standing valve V of the pump. Below the tubes T T a pipe is connected to the cylinder A by the screw 0, which serves as a receptacle for the dirt and other waste matter falling from the valves. The cylinder A is connected to the working barrel of the to the surface of the ground through the valve" V, as in any ordinary pump of the kind. Then. any dirt or sediment accumulating around the valves falls through the openings at a a into the receptacle B.

When necessary the whole apparatus is drawn from the well, the receptacle R detached and cleaned out.

I do not claim as my invention the valve V.

I claim- 1. The combination of the cylinder A having the screw P, tubes T T, hollow screw S for the reception of the valve-case and valve V, and the receptacle R attached by the screw 0, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.

2. The cylinder A, provided with the tubes T T and screw P, in combination with the hollow screw S, forming the valve-case for valve V, constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
