Be it known that LARs J. LARsoN,y a citizen oit the United States, and resident of the city ot Seattle, county oft King, and State ot llVashington, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door locks, and more particularly to a mortise lock of the knob and key controlled type, having its bolt and actuating mechanism located within a tubular casing that may be mounted by being inserted and fixed within a bored hole of like diameter.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character, which may be very easily applied, without the usual chisel work, and which will be serviceable, durable and possible to be manufactured at a relatively small cost as compared to the cost o-t the usual type of mortise locks.
It is also an object of the invention to provide both latch and knob controlled locks for the device which are of vnovel and simple construction. v
In accomplishing` these and other objects of the invention I have provided` the improved dctails ot construction, the preferred 'forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereinf Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, taken vertically through the tubular casing of a lock embodying the present invention, as
mounted in a door; showing the bolt or v latch extended into the latch opening` of a door jamb.
Figure 2 is a similar horizontal section of the same parts; also showing the knob and locking mechanism therein.
Figure 3 is a sectional view ot the lock from the side opposite that shown in Fig ure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are vertical sections taken, respectively, on the lines 4--4 and 5 5 of Figure 1. y
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the door knob taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawings: 1 designates a tubular casing wherein the principal parts of the lock are contained, and which at its outer end has a plate 2 secured thereto, adapted to receive screws, or the like, 3, to hold the lock in functioning position when mounted in a door. y
Fixed within the casing tube, at its inner end, are bars 4 and 5, which are rounded on their outer sides to fit the walls of the tube, and have vertical, spaced apart adjacent `faces, forming a longitudinal guideway 6, wherein the inner end of a latch bolt 7 is slidably contained. At its outer end the bolt 7 has an extension or latch, 8, which is adapted to project through an openingV `9 inthe end plate v2, and into locking position within the opening 10 of a plate 11 that may be Xed to the door jamb indicated at 12.
Outward movement of the latch is limited by the engagement of the outer end of the bolt 7 with the inner tace of the plate 2, and its movement into the casing is limited by the abutment ot shoulders 13 and 14, respectively, at opposite sides and adjacent the outer and inner ends of the bolt, against the outer end ot the bar 4 and a shoulder 15 formed centrally ot the bar 5.
One face of the bolt 7 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 17 wherein the forward end ot' the bar 5 is slidably contained, and interposedwithin this slot and bearing at its opposite ends against the for ward end of the bar 5 and against the bolt 7 at the forward endof the slot 17, is a coiled spring 18 which yieldingly holds the bolt in extended position but which is adapted to yield and permit the bolt to move inwardly when the inclined 'tace 8" of the latch moves into engagement with the edge of the plate 11, when the door is moved Jfrom open to closed position.
The means Jfor drawing the bolt inwardly against the spring to release the latch from the jamb plate, comprises the usual knobs 2O that are fixed to the opposite ends of a square rod A21 which extends transversely through the inner end of the lock housing, and which, within the lock, is contained within a sleeve 22 that is rotatably. mounted 4in bores 23 transversely through theinner ends ofthe bars, 4 and 5, and which register with a hole 24' transversely through the door. bolt 7 to move the latter inwardly; the bolt by the shaft within a. transverse bore Formed on the sleeve, between the bars 4 and 5, is an eccentric cam 35 which engages the under side of an arm 36 that is pivotally mounted at its inner end on a pin 37 extended between the bars and at its forward end is adapted, when the cam is in lowered position, to engage a shoulder 40 adjacent the forward end ot the bolt 7 to hold the bolt against inward movement, but when the cam is turned partially around, it will raise the arm from the shoulder so that it is in position to pass into a slot 4l in the bolt and will not prevent its inward movement.
l have also equipped the outer knob 20 with locking mechanism whereby itmay be prevented from being turned and in this manner the door can be locked from the outside. On this side of the door, shank 20 of the knob is rotatably contained within a sleeve 45, which is equipped with a base lange 46 whereby it is secured to the door and at its outer end extends within an annular slot 47 in the inner face of the knob.
rhe body of the knob is hollow, and located therein is a cross bar 48, provided at its ends with slots 49 which slidably receive ribs 50, formed on the inner walls of the knob, to lock the bar against rotative move ment in the knob, but permitting it to move y toward and from the base of the knob. This bar is enlarged at the center and provided. with an opening 5]. through which a key maybe extended, as presently described, and on its inner side has extended lingers 52, 52, adapted to seat within notches 53, 53 in the outer end of the sleeve 45, to lock the bar and knob against turning and thereby prevent drawing of the bolt 7.
Located between the base of the knob and y the bar 48, is an annular member having ci-,transverse portion 61 provided centrally with ay boss 61', which is equipped with akey slot 62 formed in the center thereof and directly below the central opening 5l of the bar 48 and a key hole 63 in the center of the outer wall of the knob, into which a suitable key, as shown at 64, may be inserted to revolve the annular member 60.
y The member 60 has two inclined surfaces 60. upon which the bar 48 restsyand when the member 60 is turned so that the bar is supported on the highest part of these surfaces,
the fingers 52, 52 will be raised tree .from the notches 53, 53, and the knob may be turned to move the bolt in the usual manner.
A coiled spring'70 is located within the knob to bear against the outer side ot the bar 48 to hold the parts in functional position and urge the bar into locking relation. when the member 6() is properly turned by the key, and dogs 7l are pivotally attached to the knob and urged inwardly by springs 7 2 into sockets 73 in the periphery of the ringniemv ber to hold the device yieldingly where placed by the key, either in unlocking or locking position.
Vith the lock so constructed, it is apparent that it can bemounted in a. bored hole and secured in place by the end plate 2. Normally the bolt is held extended'and can be drawn in by turning the knobs in either di rection.
Locking from the inside can be done by manipulation of the knob 30, and from the outside by the key-actuated mechanism in the outer knob.
Such a lock is simple in construction, quick to install and will be serviceable and'du-u rable.
