This invention relates to window sash locks of the type commonly used for double hung windows, having a catch fixed to the lower meeting rail of the upper sash adapted to be engaged by a spiral cam on a rotary thumb latch mounted to turn on the upper meeting rail of the lower sash to engage behind and under the catch to draw the two meeting rails together horizontally and prevent them from separating vertically, thereby maintaining a weather tight joint and preventing rattling of the sash.
The invention aims to provide a secure fastening and key operated locking means for such thumb operated locks for windows and other purposes, and comprises several varieties of locking mechanism as hereinafter described,
More specic objects of the invention are to prevent jimmying or forcing double hung windows of the common type provided with a pivoted thumb latch engaging under a hook shape catch; to provide suitable deadlocking means for securing such window locks against opening from either within or without except by the use of a mating key; and to adapt the common type of multiple tumbler cylinder lock to deadlocking said window latch mechanism thereby producing an improved rotary type bolt lock.
With these objects in view the invention has been embodied in various designs, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a transverse cross-section through the meeting rails of a double hung window fitted with a thumb bolt having a wafer-type tumbler deadlocking mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a Vertical cross-section of the same at right angles to that of Fig. 1, said cross-sections being taken on the lines 3-3 and I-I in Fig. 2, respectively;
Figs. 4 and 5 are horizontal cross-sections of the same on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 in Fig. 3, respectively, Fig. 5 being drawn to a larger scale; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the barrel which houses the deadlockingcylnder or plug and associated mechanism for controlling the movement of the rotary thumb bolt.
Figs. 7 to 12, inclusive, illustrate modifications of the invention, Figs. '7 and 8 being a Vertical section (similar to Fig. 3) and cross-section thereof on the line 8 8 of a wafer type deadlocking mechanism which can be locked without a key, the plug in Fig. 8 being shown turned to the unlocked position; Figs. 9 and 10 being views similar to Figs. 1 and 3 of a pin tumbler type deadlocking mechanism; Fig, 11 being a bottom plan view of the upper rail illustrated in Fig. 9; and Fig. 12 being a view similar to Fig. 10 showing a pin tumbler type deadlocking mechanism from which the key can be removed only in the locked position.
' In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, the upper and lower meeting rails II, I2 are shown in the closed position of the window sash, with the thumb latch or bolt I3 engaging its keeper I4 in locking position, and the wafer tumbler mechanism in deadlocking position, the key .45 being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 as about to be inserted in the deadlocking plug I6. The thumb bolt I3 and hook shape keeper I4 are of the usual spiral cam type, so contrived as to pull the meeting rails together both laterally and vertically when the thumb bolt is forced as far as it will go in the clockwiseor locking direction. The keeper is preferably secured to the upper surface of the upper sash meeting rail I I by wood screws II in theusual manner and also by a through stud or screw I8 which is inserted from below and engages a threaded hole in a boss I9 projecting from the under face of the keeper I4 into a socket in the rail II. The lower end of the stud carries a anged washer or circular nut 20 which is let into a counterbored recess in the under face of the rail II, and after being screwed home, the head of the stud is cut off and riveted over the outer face of the washer to prevent withdrawal.
The body 2I of the thumb bolt assembly is secured to the upper face of the meeting rail I2 of the lower sash by means of screws 22, and is provided with a central barrel 23 let into a hole bored for it in the meeting rail which helps to secure it in place. This barrel may be integral with the body (as shown in Fig. 7) or it may be a separate part secured to the body by screws 24, engaging in lugs 25 one on each side of the barrel, that t in recesses 26 formed on the under side of the body, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 6. The upper end of the barrel 23 is preferably counterbored to receive a ange or collar 21 on the under side of the thumb bolt` which ts within a central hole in the body 2| and serves to position and guide the thumb bolt. A flange 28 on the upper end of the plug I6 retains the thumb bolt in place. The cylinder I6 is provided with opposite lugs 29 which engage in recesses 30 at opposite sides of the central hole in the thumb bolt to permit the latter to turn through a small angle in either direction with respect to the plug when the latter is in deadlocking position, thereby permitting the thumb bolt to be turned independentlyv of the deadlocking means sufficiently to clamp the meeting rails securely together tn, prevent draftiness and rattling.
The barrel 23 has slots or grooves 3| on opposite sides to receive the ends of the sliding tumblers 32 of usual form carried by the locking plug in transverse slots shaped to receive them.

In a bolt lock having a rotary locking member assembly and a Xed keeper member adapted to be respectively applied to two relatively movable portions of a structure, the combination of a bolt mounted in said locking member assembly for rotation about a xed axis, and a cylinder rotatably mounted in a coaxial recess in said assembly and provided with a bolt engaging element, said cylinder having an axial slot to receive a key, transverse slots in said cylinder 1ntersecting said axial slot and key engaging slides carried thereby, said assembly having the side wall of said cylinder receiving recess shaped to receive the outer ends of said slides to allow them to project from said slots in deadlocking position thereby permitting insertion of the key, means cooperating with said slides to prevent rotation of said cylinder from deadlocking position eX- cept when the proper key is in said axial slot in engagement therewith, means for rotating said bolt and cylinder, and means on said keeper member with which said bolt engages in deadlocking position of said cylinder to prevent separation of said locking member assembly and keeper member both axially and transversely of the axis of said cylinder.

In a bolt lock having a rotary locking member assembly and a xed keeper member adapted to be respectively applied to two relatively movable portions of a structure, the combination of a bolt mounted in said locking member assembly for rotation about a xed axis, and a cylinder rotatably mounted in a coaxial recess in said assembly and having bolt engaging means on its exposed end for permitting limited angular movement of said bolt with respect thereto, said cylinder having an axial slot to receive a key, transverse slots in said cylinder and key engaging slides carried thereby, said assembly having the side wall of said cylinder receiving recess shaped to receive the outer ends of said slides to allow them to project from said slots in deadlocking position thereby permitting insertion of the key, means cooperating with said slides to prevent rotation of said cylinder from deadlocking position except when the proper key is in said axial slot in engagement therewith, means for rotating said bolt independently of said cylinder, and means on said keeper member with which said bolt engages in deadlocking position of said cylinder to prevent separation of said locking member assembly and keeper member both axially and transversely of the axis of said cylinder, said bolt and keeper member being adjustable to maintain a tight fit within the capacity for angular movement between said bolt and cylinder.

In a locking means for double hung windows including a keeper secured to one sash meeting rail and a rotary thumb bolt mounted on a body secured to the other sash meeting rail, said rotary thumb bolt having a spiral cam for engaging said keeper to draw said sash meeting rails together vertically and transversely to close the gap between them and prevent rattling, the combination of a cylinder rotatable in said body with its axis coaxial with the axis of rotation of said rotary thumb bolt, said cylinder having one end exposed adjacent to said thumb bolt, a driving connection between said cylinder and thumb bolt, an axial key slot in said cylinder opening through said exposed end, said body having means for preventing rotation of said cylinder, and slides carried by said cylinder adapted to cooperate with said means for preventing rotation of said cylinder in the absence of the mating key.

In a locking means for double hung windows including a keeper secured to one sash meeting rail and a rotary thumb bolt mounted on a body secured to the other sash meeting rail, said rotary thumb bolt having a spiral cam for engaging said keeper to draw meeting rails together vertically and transversely to close the gap between them and prevent rattling, the combination of a cylinder disposed in said body with its axis coaxial with the axis of rotation of said rotary thumb bolt, said cylinder having one end exposed adjacent to said thumb bolt, a driving connection between said cylinder and thumb bolt, an
axial key slot in said cylinder opening through.
said exposed end, said body having means for preventing rotation of said cylinder, and slides carried by said cylinder intersecting said slot and adapted to cooperate with said means carried by said body for deadlocking and unlocking said cylinder, said driving connection between said cylinder and thumb bolt permitting limited movement of the latter With respect to the cylinder when the latter is in deadlocking position.

In a rotary bolt and keeper type of sash lock, a body member adapted to be secured to a sash member, a bolt member supported by said body, said body having a cylindrical recess provided with an internal ledge near its bottom, a cylindrical rotatably mounted in said recess pro- I vided with key responsive means cooperating with said body for deadlocking said boit member, said cylinder having an operative connection with said bolt member at its outer end and a projection at its inner end extending through said internal ledge and provided with an abutment, and a compression spring surrounding the inner end of said cylinder and bearing against said internal ledge and abutment to press said cylinder towards the inner end of said recess, whereby said cylinder and bolt member are retained in frictional contact with said body member permitting rotation of said cylinder and bolt member when said deadlocking means are released by the proper key.

In a sash lock, a body member adapted to be secured to a sash member, a bolt member supported by said body, said body having a cylindrical recess provided with an internal ledge near its bottom, a cylinder rotatably mounted in said recess operatively connected with said bolt member and provided with key responsive means cooperating With said body for deadlocking said bolt member, said cylinder having a ilange overlying said bolt member at its outer end and a projection at its inner end extending through said internal ledge and provided with a removable cap, and a compression spring surrounding the inner end of said cylinder and bearing against said internal -ledge and cap to press said cylinder towards the inner end of said recess, whereby said cylinder and bolt member are retained in frictional contact with said body member permitting rotation of said cylinder and bolt member when said deadlocking means are released by the proper key.
