Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 19x22.
Application led November 8, 1919. Serial No. 336,588.
To @ZZ whom t may cof/1.667%: n
Be itV known that I, MARTIN T. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Joilet, in the county of l/Vill and State of Illi- Another object of the invention is the prof vision of an improved device carried by one of the window sashes and adapted to engage the other window sash tolock the window' sashes against opening movement toward each other.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved sash. fastener carried by one of the window sashes and adapted to normally lie-out of the path of the other window sashand capable of extending outwardly in the path of t-he other window sash to prevent inward movement of the sashes.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of improved means for holding the sash fastener in an extended position in the path of a window sash, so as to vent accidental displacement of the fastener.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved window fastener embodying a locking pin arranged 'to engage the parts of the window fastener to hold the same in an operative position, the fastener having means for receiving the pin to hold the same against loss, when the fastener is in an inoperative position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved window fastener as above referred to, which is durable and efficient in use, one which is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a. part of this specification, and in which drawings; I
Figure 1 is a detail fragmentary sectional View of a window casing showing the invention applied thereto.
pre-
Figur@ 2 iS an enlarged side elevationof the improved window fastener', showing the same applied to a window sash and in operative position. n
Figure 3 is a plan view of the window `fastener showing' the same attac-hed to a window sash and ininoperati-ve position.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding krparts, thro'ughoutfthe several views, the letter `A-indica'tes a window frame of the ordinary or' any preferred const-ruction, having upper and lower sashes B and C shdably mounted therein;v and D indicates the limproved fastener. u u
The improved window fastener D includes rthe wings 5 and 6 which are preferably formed yfrom metal 'plates' either cast o-r rolled, and having the meeting ends thereof turned backto pro-vide alignedy hinge bar'- yrels 7 and 8 for thegreceptionef a hinge pin or, pintle 9. y y v,
The Wing 6 is provided with a plurality of equidistantly spaced apertures 10 for thereception of screws `or otherjsuitable fastening elements 11, by means of which the wing is secured to the side rail 12 of the upper sash B. The wing 16 is secured to the side rail 12 in spaced relation to the mid rail 13 ofthe upper sash B, so as to permit of a limited opening of the sashes in relation to each other. t
The movable wing 5 is adapted to extend outwardly and in the path of the lower sash B and in direct alignment with the wing 6, and the movable wing 5 is adapted to enga-ge the upper 'rail 14 of the lower sash, as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The movable wing 5 is held ineXtended position in direct alignment with the movable wing 6 by means of a removable pin 15 which is adapted to engage in eyes 16 and 17 formed on the upper terminals of the wings. The upper terminals of the wings are rolled baok upon themselves to form these eyes. The pin 15 is provided with a head 19 aty one end thereof, so as to limit the inward movement of the pin when the same is placed in the eyes 16 and 17.
The outer free longitudinal edge of the wing 5 is rolled to provide a socket 2O for the reception of the locking pin, when the movable wing 5 is in its inoperative position in abutting relation to the stationary wing 6.
In operation of the improved device, the
in engagementwith the upper rail.
g, y imanes movable wing is moved out of engagement with the stationary wing 6 until the same comes in direct alignment therewith which aligns the eyes 1G and 17. l/Vhen the eyes 16 and 17 are in registration with each other thepin l5 is removed from the socket 2O and placed in the eyes: which prevents swinging movement of the wing 5 on the hinge pin which holds the same in operative position This prevents move-ment of the sashes toward ,each other and thus prevents anyone from gaining access to a room through a window provided with the improved lock. lt can be seen that, when the hinged plate 5 is swung in inoperative position in abutting engagement .with the immovable plate or wing 6,
' the same lies out of the path of the lower window sashes and permits the sashes to be readily raised and lowered.
By providing locks of this character, the Window can be either lowered from the top and locked against further movement, or raised from the bottom and locked, or opened at the'top and bottom and locked.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and referred to in the above description as the preferred embodiments, is the most eicient and practical, yet realizing conditions concurrent with the adoptionof my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to as desired, without sacrilicing any of the advantages of myk invention as set forth.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
l. rlhe combination with sliding sashes including side and end rails, of a fastener therefor including a stationary wing, means to secure the stationary wing to one of the side rails ot one of the sashes in spaced relation to the end rails thereoi', a movable wing hingedly secured te the outer end of the stationary wing adapted to extend in direct alignment with the stationary wing and in the path of the lower sashfor enfvaging the upper end rail thereof, eyes formed on the upper ends of the wings and a removable pin arranged to i'it in said eyes when the wings arey in aligned position, y
'2.KA window sash fastenerl comprising a pair of hingedly connected wings, eyes formed on the upper terminals of the wings and adapted to be brought into registration with each other when the wings are in their extended positions, and a pin adapted to t in said eyes when the wings are in their` eX- tended positions.
3. ln a window sash fastener, a pair of hingedly connected sections, a pin for holding the sections against swinging movement, and a socket carried by one of said wings for the reception of said pin.
