IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,584, dated August 5, 1873; application filed April 2, 1873.

Be it known that I, A. MosHER, of Canton, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my fence; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
This invention has relation to farm-fences; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of devices for laterally supporting the panels, substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, 'A designates the horizontal rails of afence constructed in panels. The battens project slightly at the ends of the panels to allow the latter to bear against or a a are diagonal braces nailed to the first and second rails of the adjacent panels, near the end battens of the panels, leaving between said braces and the battens wedge-shaped apertures for the reception of the stakes (1. After the first end of the first panel is braced a stake is passed through the aperture c at the other end of the panel and driven into the ground until the notch in its side embraces the brace a. The second panel is now raised and its projecting batten brought to bear against that of the first, after which asecond stake is passed through the aperture 1) of said second panel and made to intersect the first stake, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed that the adjacent braces to of the-two panels are inclined in opposite .directions and converge toward their lower ends. WVhen the stakes are arranged as shown, an opening is left between their upper surfaces and the lower edge of the top rails, through which is passed a key, f, to secure said stake in place. The rest of the fence is put up obviously in the same manner as the second panel.
Having described my invention, I claim- The fence-panels A A, provided at their adj acent, ends with inclined braces a and united and supported by the notched stakes at d and key f, as shown and described.
