Description

M. S ILVERMAN. CONTMNER FOR FIBBOUS MATERIAL.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 14, I919- Patented May 9, 1922.-
NAM. I l ll. I l I lllInI-llul-l:
UNITED STATE MORTIMER SILVERMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CONTAINER FOR FIBROUS MATERIAL.
To (all "whom it may concern:
.Be t known that l. MonTIMnn bILvEnllIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston. county of @ufliollt. andState of lvlassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Containers for Fibrous lllalterials, of which the following description, in connecion with the accompanying; drawings, a --"'JfitililtltllllUll, .lilte characters on the drawii reprt ting; like parts.
intention relates to acontainer or lniilder for rolls of fibrous material such as paper, oloth or the like.
The container may be used for holding rolls of paper of material Width, such as toi -t paper or the like, but it is particularly ind and adapted for holding:relatively ua-iloiv rolls of paper, cloth orjthe. like for use in Wiping: and cleaning razors and like instruments. l
The invention has for its object to provide a siin 'ile, ellicient. attii-actiwi and inexpensive eontanuw which is capable of being secured to the wall or other s-zupport in a room, and with which any desi 3d length of paper may be fed. out of the cimtainer and severed from the roll Within the latter. l
lfrovit-iion is made for ilncilitating the delivery of the paper out. of the container.
ilhcse and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Fin. 1. is a side elevation of a container embodying this invention.
liig. a front elevation of the container shown in. Fig. 1 looking toward the right.
Fig. 3, an inside view of the eover re: nmved troin its casing. y
Fl et, a section on the line 4%, Fig. 3. hi 5, an end view of the spindle or roll on which the paper or the like is Wound, and Fig. 6, a detail of the guide to be referred to. i l
The container herein. shown as embodying this invention comprises a cylindrical metal casing; a open at one side and closed by the head 5 at its opposite side. The open side of the casing is designed to be closed by a cover 0, see ll 3 and 4;.
The can: no. is designed to contain a roll of paper, cloth or other fibrous material, WlilClllS wouijid upon an arbor or spool 12 of Wood or other suitable material, Which in tl'iepresent instance mounted to revolve upon stub shafts 13, 1.4:, extended into the opposite ends of the bore of the spool.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922 Application filed February 14, 1919. Serial No. 276,964.
One stub shaft as 13 is attached to the head 6 and the other 14- is mounted in the cover 0, being extended thcrethrough and provided v itha thumb piece or handle 17 for rotatmg the roll. The shaft 14 is preferably provided With bent arms 18, Which are de signed to enter suitable sockets or recesses 19 in one end of the spool 12 so as to efliect a positive engagement of the shaft 14- With the spool and enable the latter to be rotated positively when the shaft 14- is turned by means of the handle or thumb piece 17.
The spool 12 may and preferably Will be maintained in engagement With the turning' arms 18by aspring, acting against the op posite end of the spool. The spring referrcd to may be made as shown and consists of a series of sheet metal arms 20 radiating from a center piece Ell having a hole to permit the spring to be fitted upon the stub shaft 13 between the spool 12 and the head Z) of the casing, the arms 20 being suitably shaped to bear at their ends against the head 6 and exert a nessure of the centier portion 21 upon one end of the spool and thereby keep the other end of said spool in engagement .Wltll the arms 18 on the shaft 14. i
The rising ais provided in its circumfen once with a transverse slot 23 for the passage of the end of the paper out of the cas ing, and provision is made for facilitating the (ilclivery of the paper out of the casing. To this end the casino; has located in it a curved member 2st preferably of sheet metal Which is pivotally mounted Within the casing in the head 6 and in a hip; or car 25 eX- tended from theinner circinnference of the casing, see Fig. 6. The sheet metal memher 24 has one end as 26 extended through the slot 23 in the casing to the outside thereof to form a knife over which the free end 27 of the paper is passed and by means of Which a given length of the paper may be severed from the roll Within theorising. The member 24 Within the casing is made of substantial length and is extended between the main body of the roll and the outermost layer thereof. so as to separate the said outermost layer and guide it toward the slot or delivery opening in the casing. when the roll is turned by the handle 17.
Provision is made for preventing the roll from being turned in the reverse direct-ion and for this purpose the shaft lt has fast on it a ratchet Wheel 30 With which cooperates a holding panel 31 preferably made in the form of a spring metal strip which is fastened to the inside of the cover 0, see Figs. 3 and 4.
The cover may be secured in fixed relation to the casing by a bayonet joint connection comprising a bayonet slot 32 in the lip or flange 33 of the cover and a pin or stud 3 on the outside of the casing, see Fig. 2, and if desired, the cover may be locked to the casing against removal by unauthori'zed persons which may be effected by providing a lug or ear 35 on thecover, which cooperates with a lug or car 36 on the easing, and each of which is provided with a hole for the passage of a padlock, not shown,
when the cover is in its fixed position on the casing and the hole in the lug 35 registers with the hole in the lug 36.
From the above description, it will be seen that the container or holder for the roll of paper or other fibrous material may be produced at suiiiciently small cost, to enable'them to be installed in the bath rooms of hotels and like places as a part of the equipment, with the attendant advantages and convenience for the male occupants of the rooms of the hotel, for supplying paper for wiping the blades of razors, when shaving, and while the container or holder is especially designed for this purpose, it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as it can be made of any desired size to hold a roll of paper or the like of any desired width.
In Fig. 1 the casing a is shown as provided with a base 40 for attaching the casing to a wall or other support 4-1, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect.
' Claims:
1. A device of the character described,
I comprising a casing normally open at one side for the-insertion therein of a roll of fibrous material and provided with a slot inlits circumference through which the outer layer is extended, a cover to close said open side, a rotatable device within said casing upon which said roll is mounted to turn therewith, a guide for the fibrous material located in said casing and coope 'ating with said slot to guide the outer layer of the paper thereto, a knife attached to said guide and extended from within the casing through said slot, and means co-operating with said rotatable device for rotating said roll from outside of said casing.
52. A device of the character described, comprising a casing for containing a roll of fibrous material and having a slot in its circumference through which the outer layer of said roll is extended, a guide for the fibrous material located in said casing and pivoted thereto and having its inner end interposed between the main body of the roll and the outer layer thereof and cooperating with said. slot to direct the outer layer thereto, and a knife attached to said pivoted guide and co-operating with said slot.
3. A device of the character described comprising a casing normally open at one side and provided. with a slot in its circumference, a cover to close said open side, a spool having a roll of fibrous material thereon rotatably mounted within said casing to feed the paper to said slot, means carried by said cover for engaging said spool to rotate it and said roll, and a spring to keep the said spool in engagement with said means.
4. A device of the character described comprising a casing normally open at one side for the insertion therein of a roll of fibrous material. and provided with a slot in its circumference through which the outer layer of said roll is extended, a cover to close said open side, and a guide for said outer layer pivoted within said casing and having a knife attached thereto and extended into said slot from within the easing.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
