Patented Augu st5,1873,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOSEA O. ELMER, OF SAND BANK, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,499, dated August 5, 1873; application filed February 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOSEA O. ELMER, of Sand Bank, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the improvement of fence-posts, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a fence with wooden rails or boards. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a partly sectional view of a post, representing the mode of setting it.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the main posts; B, the middle post; 0, the wooden rails. The posts A are i made of double angle iron, and the middle posts B of T-iron. The bottoms of all the posts are formed of Wood and cement or artificial stone. F is a cap-piece of iron, which rests upon the top of the wood, through which cap the iron post passes and enters the Wood, as seen in Fig. 3. G is the wood. H is a band of iron around the top of the wood. I represents cement or artificial stone,by which the wood bottom G is protected. The iron, being firmly-set in the wood, and'the wood covered by the cap F and protected from air and water by the cement, renders the post indestructible. J represents iron clasps, by which the wooden rails O are confined to the posts.
By means of the iron clasps J the entire strength of the wooden rail is secured',,while splinting by ordinary use is rendered impossible.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A fence-post having its upper part of iron, its lower of iron, wood, and cement or artificial stone, and provided with the intermediate cap F, as and for the purpose described.
HOSEA O. ELMER.
