LUCIUS E. WEAVER, or new HAMPTON, oonnnoriour, Assreuvoa T0 SUMMIT THREAD CGIVIIPANY, or. aas'r HAMPTON, eonivnorrou'r, A CORPORATION Application'filed. February 28,1921. Serial No. 448,886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIUS E. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Bobbin Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bobbin case having a tubular post, on which the tubular core of a universally Wound bobbin is rotatable. The post is longitudinally slotted, and with it is associated bobbin-confining and ejecting means adapted to confine the bobbin against removal from the case, when the shuttle, of which the case forms a member, is operative, and to eject or displace the bobbin, or the core of a spent bobbin, when the case is removed from the shuttle body. Said means includes as elements a spring-pressed plunger within the post, provided with a bobbin-ejecting finger pro ecting through the post slot, and a cam-shaped latch pivoted to the outer end portion of the post, and adapted to confine the bobbin in the case and to hold the plunger and its ejecting finger in an inoperative position, all as shown by the Porter Patent No. 832,414, of October 2, 1906.
The object of the invention is to utilize one of said elements to carry a controlling device for yieldingly retarding the rotation of the bobbin, so that the bobbin will not rotate faster than the call of the thread requires.
The invention is embodied in a bobbin case having the above-described bobbin-confining and ejecting means, and a resilient bobbin-controlling tongue, attached at one end to the plunger element of said means, at a point within the post slot andout of the bobbin-containing space in the case, said tongue having a free end portion normally projecting into said space, and adapted to bear on the inner surface of the bobbin core and yieldingly retard the rotation thereof, the arrangement being such that the resilient tongue, when in use, does not require reduction of the bulk of the thread winding forming the body of the bobbin, so that the employment of the resilient tongue does not involve a reduction of the yardage of the thread comprising said Winding.
SEWING-MACHINE herein case.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented May 2, 1922.
Of the'accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,-
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a bobbin case and a bobbin, the bobbin-confining and e ecting means, and the controlling device associated with said means and embodying the invention, being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of bigure 1, the bobbin being removed.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 12 represents a bobbin case of the type shown by the above-mentioned Porter patent, used in the well known Wheeler and \Vilcox vertical hook sewing machine, although the applicability of the lmprovements herein described is not limited to use in this particular type of machine. The bobbin case is provided with the usual tubular post 13, having at one side a longitudinally extending slot 14. 15 represents the core and 16 the thread winding of a universally wound bobbin, adapted to rotate on the post 13.
The case is provided, as in the Porter patent, with bobbin-confining and ejecting means, one element of said means being a spring-pressed plunger 17, having at one end a bobbin-ejecting tongue 18, another element of said means being a latch 19, fitted at 20 to the outer end portion of the post 13, and having a cam-shaped member 21 cooperating as described in the Porter patent, with the plunger 17, in holding the plunger retracted, and the ejecting finger 18 inoperative.
I utilize the said plunger to support a resilient bobbin-controlling tongue, which is attached to the plunger at a point out of the bobbin-containing space of the case, and has a free end portion normally projecting into said space, and adapted to bear on a portion of the bobbin and yieldingly retard the rotation thereof, so that the bobbin will not rotate faster than is required by the call of the thread.
22 represents the resilient tongue, which is attached at 23 as by a rivet, to the plunger 17, at a point within the periphery of the tubular post 13. The free end portion of the resilient tongue 22 normally projects through the post slot 14, and into the bobbincontaining space, the arrangement of the tongue being such that it is adapted to be displaced inwardly by the core 15 ofa bobbin applied to the post 13, and to bear yieldingly on the internal surface of the bobbin core 15, and thus yieldingly retard the rotation of the bobbin.
1 claim:
In a sewing-machine bobbin case having a tubular post, constituting a bearing on which a universally wound bobbin is rotatable, and
provided with a longitudinal slot", and bobbin eonfining and ejecting means associated with said post, said means including a plunger Within the post, having: a bobbinejecting tongue; a resilient bobbin-controlling tongue attached to said plunger at a point out of the bobbin-containing space, and within the post, and normally projecting through the post slot and into the bobbincontaining space, said tongue being adapted to be pressed inward from its normal position by the core of a bobbin applied to the post, and to yieldingly retard the rotation of the bobbin.
lln testimony whereof I have flffiXGCl my signature.
