-forreaming out This invention relates to under-reamers, or enlarging well holes, and particularly to those devices intended for under-reaming holes drilled inthe ground `for oil land gas and any other minerals or product, or to prospect for the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which can be attached to any standard stem ,and bit and--which will allow the drilling bit to ,work at thesame time as an in advance of the under-reamer to which it is attached.
The present method employed in drilling, is to use a bit attached to the stem, and drill the hole the same size .as the bit. Whenever it is desired to enlargethe'diameter of the hole, in order to allow deeper casing to enter, it is necessary to withdraw the bit, disconnect it from the stem and then attach an underreamer for enlarging the hole, alternating each operation. This condition applies whenever the hole is\cased to a certain point, which occurs in practically all wells.
The under-reamer attached to the bit, according to my invention, will permitdrilling and under-reaming at the same time.

VIn the central portion of the reamer bodyis provided -a seriesof adjoining recesses 18 and 19 in which is secured under-reamer. Tn the recess 18 are slidably mounted the release slips 4. Secured in said slips, and projecting therefrom are rods 5 which terminate in joints 46, by means o d which they-are attached tothe .Through the medium of the joint 8 the rods' short rods 7.

In .the recess 19 are mounted the underreamer cutting bits or lugs 10, which are swiveled in the main body 1 by' the pins 21 in the ear'lOa. Between the cutting lugs 10 and on each side of the rod 9 is a spring 11, which forces the lugs apart and throws them into cutting position.

The string of tools is then placed in position by, lowering it through the casing 22. When the split 'ring' 4a comes inl contact with the top of the casing, it is kicked oil, and the casing itself serves to hold the lugs retracted until they reach the bottom thereof, whereupon they are automatically releasedv and spread into working position by the spring 11, and 'becomes locked when the release slips 4; leave the casing, and expand by the working'of the springs 14C;

It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention. l

6. An under-reame'r as claimed in claim 2 in which the means for adjusting the working rods consists of a turnbuckle.

An under-reamer as claimed in claim 2, in which the cutting lugs are provided lwith ears, means for pivoting said ears. to `the reamer body, longitudinally ,extending recesses in said ears, means for forcing said working rods into engagement with said recesses, forclng the ears apart and retracting the cutting lugs. y
