.Be it known thatl, Scorrrllknooon, a'
citizen of the United States, residing at ."Shldlelgin the'county of Osage and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a: Combination Bit and' Underreamer', of which the following is a specification.-
This. invention relates to .ajcombination bit and underreamer, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
objectof the-invention is to provide a tool including a drill bit and an under reamer, and adapted to. be used drilling clean out; the ;wel l, both Operations taking wells, and which will drill and underream'or 1 a. further object-of th esears it provide means ,for resiliently i1v and slidably holding thereamer,-bit:upon the shank of the drill bit, so,thatthey-mayoperate in the earth below the lower edgeof the well cas-' ing, and .cutthe earth toallowspace for the lowering of .the casing in'the hole.
includes a. drill bit provided at its side with longitudinally disposed recesses, the said recesses having in their opposite side walls grooves adapted to receive flanges, which are provided upon the reamer bit,'.and whereby the said reamer bits may move longitudimay encounter the'lower edge of the casin vand thus they are-held at iixed points whi e the drill bit continues in its upward movement. At such time, the springs are contracted longitudinally and. the sections of the connectmgmeans may move longitudinally with relation to each other. When the drill bit descends, the said springs expand longitudinally and the sections of the connecting means move with relation to each,
other -correspondin ly' until such time as the reamer bits arrlve at the ends ofthe .With'theseobjects in view, the structure groove where all of the gether. v In'the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of the combinaparts descend; to-
tion drill bit and'underreamer, with 'parts' broken away,- and parts shown in section.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of. the combined bit and under reamer, viewing the' same at the side thereof, which is disposed at a right angle to the'sideshown in elevation,
in Figure 1. p
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the'reamer bits detached.
The combination bit and underreamer includes a drill bit 1, having a shank 2,'and which may be connected with a drill rod (not 1 shown), in a'usual manner. The shank 2 is providedat its side with one or more longitudinally disposed recesses 3, having at the opposite side walls longitudinallydisposed grooves 4. At the upper ends, the recesses 3 are enlarged, as at 5, and shoulders Gare provided at the lowerends of. the said enlargements. At the upper ends, the recesses 3 are provided with sockets .7, which are formed in the upper portion of the shank 2, and as best indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The device also includes one or more reamer bits 8, which are-provided, at their opposite sides, with flanges 9, adapted to be slidably received in the grooves 4:. Recesses 10 are formed in the upper ends of the bits 8, and are disposed transversely of the bit, said recesses being provided at their lower portions, with diametric enlargements 11. The recesses 10 and the enlargements 11 thereof are disposed at acute angles to the inner faces of the bits 8, as best indicated in Figure 1 of the drawin s. The device also includes bars 12, provi ed at their upper ends with head portions 13, which are pivotally received in the sockets 7. The lower portions of the bars 12 are slotted longitudlnally as at 14:. The bars 12 are normally received in the upper ortions of the recesses 3.. Bars 15 are provi ed at their u per portions with longitudinally dispose recesses 16, and the bars 12 and 15 are llnked together at their recessed portions, as the end parts of the respective bars, pass through the slots of the co-acting bar. Pins 17 are carried at y the upper portions of the bars 15, and coil springs bear at their upper ends agamst the springs 17,. and at their lower ends against theshoulders 6, provided at the opposite side walls of the recesses 3. The bars are provided at their lowerends with heads 19, which are slidably received in the enlargements 11, ofthe grooves 10, of the reamer-bits 8.
Th e recesses 3 are deeper at their lower ends, as at 20, than at their upper portions, in order that the reamer bit 8 maybe moved down, into the lower portion of the said recesses, and into the deeper part thereof. When this is done, the bit 8 may be moved transversel of the shank 2, whereby the head 19 02. the bar 15, may be moved out of the outer end of'the recesses 10 'of the said bit. By'reversing this operation,'.the bars may be connected with the bit.
. As the drill bit 1 is reciprocated, during the operation of drilling the well in the earth, the bit 8 will work in the earth, under the lower edge of the well casing, and cut the earth so that the casing may be readily lowered in the well. During the upward movement of the shank 2, should the upper portions of the bit 8 strike the lower edge of the .well casing, the bit 8 will come to a state of rest, while the shank 2 cmtinnes its upward movement. Thus, the springs 18 are compressed longitudinally, and the bars 15; move longitudinally with relation to the bars 12. When the shank 2' descends, the spring 18expands, whereby the bars 15-move upwardly along the descending bars 12, until the flanges 9 of the bit 8 encounter the upper ends of the grooves 4, when all of the parts descend in the well together.
Having described my inventiomiwhat is claimed is: I
1. A combined drill bit and underreamer comprising a shank provided at its side with a longitudinally disposed recess having grooves in its opposite side walls, a reamer bit having at its opposite sides flanges, which are slidably received in said grooves, a longitudinally extensible element consisting of overlapping bar sections connected at one end terlinked with each other, and
with the .shank and at its other end with the reamer bit, and spring means engageable with the shank and adapted to normally hold the flanges of the reamer bit against the endwalls of the grooves in the shanks.
2. A combined drill bit and'underreamer comprising a shank having at its side a longitudinally disposed recess provided at its 0 posite side walls with longitudinally disposed grooves, a reamer bit having outstandmg flanges, which are slidably received in said grooves, said reamer bit being provided at its upper ends with a transversely disposed recem, which is diametrically enlarged at the inner portion of the bit, overlapping barsections, one of the said bar sections having a head which is pivotally mounted upon the shank, and the other'section having a head which is slidably received in the recess .of the reamer bit, saidbar sections being ina sprin bearing against the shank, and one of t e bar sections, and serving to hold the flanges of the reamer bit against the end of the groove in the shank.
3. A combined drill bit and underreamer comprising a shank provided at its side with a longitudinally disposed recess having grooves at its opposite "sidewalls, a reamer bit provided at its opposite sides with flanges, which are slidably received in said grooves, the said reamer bit being provided at-its upper end with a transversely disposed recess,
overlapping bar sections interlinked with each other, one of the said bar sections being provided at its upper end with a head, which is pivotally connected with the shank, and
