Description

W. KARASIEWICZ'.
sAsH LIFTER. APPLICATION FILED FEB.I9,1921.
Patented May WLIer fa/asi. e wie?.
Y to provide a device WALTER IKARASIEWICZ, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rPatentedy May 2, 1922.
Application led February 19, 1921. Serial No. 446,349.
provernents in Sash Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window sashes, particularly in devices employed for balancing the sashes It is the primary object of the invention which permits the regulation or compensation of the weights used for balancing the weight of the window sashes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a means or a device of this cha-rlacter which is of a simple and therefore inexpensive construction, and which can easily be attached to and detached from any window.
These and other objects will become more fully apparent as the description proceeds and will then be more specifically pointed out in the accompanying drawing. forming a material part ofthe disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is va front view of a window equipped with a device constructed accord ing to the present invention.
Figure 2 is ai front view of the device per se on a somewhat enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a front view of a plate adapted to be secured to a window casing.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the device, and
Figure 5 drum after the removal of its cover plate.
To both sides of a window 10 chambers l1 are provided in the casing 12 which are open at the inner side edges and the openings are adapted to be closed by a plate 13 to which are secured the foot flanges 11i of an open casing comprising side plates 15 connected by a bar 16 and bo-lt and nut con nection 17, said casing extending longitudinally into chamber 11. Between the plates 15 a hub 18 of a spring drum 17 is jour naled, which huby is projecting at one end from .the drum and carries a worm wheel 20, in mesh with a worm 21 at one end of a shaft 22 journaled with one end in a bracket is an inner view of the sash cord 1 signature.
23 attached to one o-f the side plates 15 and with the upper end in one of the foot flanges 14:. This shaft 22 carries in front of the foot flange 14, a toothed wheel or gear 24 adapted to be engaged by a gear 25 secured to the end of a key26, adapted to be intro-V duced through anl opening 27 in the plate 13 into chamber 11.
The drum 19 has two flanged side plates 28, andi to its hub 18 is secured one end of a strong coil spring 29, the opposite end of which isfastened to a pin 30 secured to the inner wall of one ofthe flanged side plates 28 of the drum 19.
Around the drum 19 the sash cord or cable 31 is wound, the outer end of which is guided over a guide roller 32 and carries within the window casing the usual sashweights.
The operation of the device will be clear from the foregoing description. If it is desired to compensate the weights of sash and sash weights so that the windows may be raised or lowered with greater facility, it is simply necessary to introduce key 26 through opening 27 in plate 13 into chamber 11 and to bring its gear 25 into engagement with the vgear 211 which` upon rotation of the key will tension the spring 29 through theintermediary of the worm 23 and wheel 20 to vany desired degree.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is#- in a device of the character described a chamber to each side of awindow. a casing in each of said chambers, a hub iournaled between the side plates of one casing, a worm wheel. on the outer' end of said hub. a horizontal shaft, a worm on one end of said shaft in engagement with said worm wheel, a gear on the opposite end of said shaft, a spring within said drum, a sash weight rope wound around said spring, said gear adapted to be engaged by a similar' gear at the end` of a key adapted to be introduced into the chamber for tensioning the spring to any desired degree for compensating the weight of the window sash and the sash weights, and means for guiding sash cable.
in testimony whereof I have aiXed WALTER iraaasrnwioz.
