. CENTERING GAUGE ronnairnns.
lb l'icaan a April 16,,
Be 'itfknown that I, Fla 11 n NovrrzKY, citi "Zen of Hungary, residing at Detroit, inthe' 1 center piece 18 of thelathe.
county of \Vayne .and State: of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Centering Gauges for Lathes, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to a centering gauge for 'lathes, beingmore particularly for use in connection with work which is secured-in place by clamping upon a face plate. 4
The invention has for an object to provide asimple and inexpensive device of this kind characterized by easy application and use.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the. objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to. the following description and accompanying drawings,
, and to the appended, claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. I
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a side view of a centering gauge constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 thereof. I
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section showing the means for securing the movable pin against inward movement. i
Fig. 5 is a transversesection on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4C. H
As here shown my improved centering gauge comprises a cylindrical casing consisting of an outer element having one end closed as at 11 and the opposite end is a'longitudinal sectional View open and interiorly screw-threaded, one end ofa sleeve 12 being screwed into the outer element 10. The closed end ll 'is formed with a suitable socket 11' to receive the usual Slidable in the sleeve 12 is a pin 15 having its outer end l5- pointed as at 15 to engage the work.- Located in the chamber 16 formed within the casing 10 is a coiled eX- pansion spring 17 which bears against the end of the pin 15 and normally presses the same forward, the pin 15 having an enlarged head 15 which is accommodated in the enlarged rear end 18 of the bore of the sleeve and is adapted to engage an interior shoulder in the sleeve 12 to limit the for;

movement ofthe pin under the ence of the spring 17.
,Upon the'projectingforward end .of the riorly screw threaded for about one-half its length and having the other half tapering toward its end as at 20" and longitudinally at2l, this slottedwork to be centered, the same being shown as clamped upona face plate 28 in the usual manner. As an instance of the manner'of use of my improved gauge it isas sumed that the work-is to be drilled at a point marked in the usual manner by a center punch. The work is clamped to the face plate 28 with this point approximately centered. The gauge is placed in position with the lathe piece'lj3 engaging in the socket lland the pointed end 15 of pin 15 engaging in the center punch marking in the work, the spring 1'? pushing the pin against the work. The collar 20 is then IHOVGd'llIltll its split end bears on the end of sleeve 12, and thenut 24 is then tightened causing thefiange I 25- to contract the split portion of the collar and the latter to grip the pin. With the parts in this position the pin cannot move inwardly to displace it from the center mark while at the same time it is still under the not properly centered, there will be a vibratory movement of the pin 15 during thisrotation which will be indicated on the gauge andthe work can then be shifteduntil the gauge 30 shows that it is properly centered.
Having thus described my invention what protect by Letters Patent is as follows:
7 1. A centering gauge for lathes comprising, a casing, a pm shdable 1n sald casing and having a pointed end projecting therefrom,
, Patented May's, .1922.
l5 is slidably carried a-.collar 20 exteand is adapted v ing a casinp and aspring in said casing bearing against the innerend'of said pin, and a collaradjustable along said pin adapted to permit free outward movement thereofbut to limit the inward movement thereof and means for clamping said collar upon said p n.,
2. A: centering gauge for lathes comprls- 'and having a pointede'nd projecting therefrom, and a spring insaid casing-bearing against the inner end of said pin, and a coll ar adjustable along said a pinadapted 'to collar comprising an exteriorly screw threada pin slidable in said easingv s gnature. v r
portion, and a nut screwed on said. collar "andliaving apart adapted to 'fre'elyengage said tapered split portion.
3. centering" gauge for lathes comprising a pair of telescopic elements, a spring urging-saidelemeiits to expanded position, and means adapted to permit free expansion f movement of said elements under-the influence of said spring but to limit contractive movement thereof; said means comprising a split collar adjustable; on said i in, and a clamp element adapted toeng'ageisaid'collar.
' In testimony Whereof'I have aflixed my jE IL NOYITZKY;
