POSITIONING BUTTON.
APPLICATION HLED 1uLv25.1919.

vwantoz UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN J. EVANS, OF WEST -IAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
POSITIONINGr-BUTTON.
Application Ied July 25, 1919.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN J. Evans, a citizen of the Ynited States, residing at West Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Positioning-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
rihe invention has relation to a device for machinists or tool makers and generally known as a positioning button and has for its object. to materially reduce the cost of precision boring operations of the kind that are necessary in making jigs and like work.
The invention has for its object the provision of a tool or device of the character specified which will insure a position being located with certainty, the tool embodying a button which can be quickly and easily made t0 run true and then made secure against displacement, whereby the position may be indicated with accuracy.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention, as claimed hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a side view of a tool embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 partly in section. Y
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking to the right, as indicated by the arrow.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several. views of the drawing by like reference characters. I
The tool consists of a shank V1 having a stem Q, which is of less dia-meter than the shank 1. An intermediate portion of the body of the tool is screw-threaded as indicated at 3 and receives a clamp nut 4, the outer edge of which is milled or knurled to enable a iirm grip being obtained thereon when turning the nut either to clamp or to release the button. An axial opening 5 is formed in the stem 2y and is internallyV threaded to receive a screw 6 upon which is mounted a washer 7 and a button 8. The outer surface or edge of the button 8 is Specification of Letters Patent.

formed on the segment of a sphere, this being essential to the accuracy of the device when making measurements. The button 8 has its central opening through which the screw 6 passes of larger diameter than the screw, so that the button may be adjusted within certain limits to insure its running true, even though the shank or body of the tool may wabble or run out of true.
A clamp sleeve 9 is mounted upon the stem 2 and has a limited longitudinal movement thereon. A longitudinal slot 10 formed in a side of the clamp sleeve receives a screw 11 which is threaded into the stem 2 and provides means for securing the clamp sleeve in the required adjusted position. The inner end of the clamp sleeve is enlarged, as indicated at 12 so as to present an extended surface for the action of the clamp nut 4. The outer end of the clamp sleeve has an inner fiange 18 which forms an abutment for one end of an eXpansible helical springl 14 which is located within the sleeve and confined between the end of the stem 2 and the `iiange 13. -The spring 14 normally presses the sleeve 9 outwardly, so as to grip the button 8 between the end of the sleeve and the washer 7 in a manner to admit of the button being adjusted and retained in the adjusted position during its securance by turning the clamp nut 4, so as to cause the sleeve to clamp the button between its outer end and the washer 7.
In practice the shank 1 of the device is slipped into the chuck of a milling machine or other machine and is made secure. The device is now rotated and the button 8 is caused to run true by pressing a suitable object against theouter edge thereof. such as a piece of wood. After the button 8 has been caused to run true, the machine is stopped and the button made secure by turning the clamp nut 4 to cause it to come in contact with the inner end of the sleeve make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A tool of the character specied, comprising a shank having a stem, a clamp nut on the shank, a button on the shank and movable .transversely thereof in every direction, means for temporarily holding the button in a given position and means acting jointly with the clamp nut for securing the button in the required adjusted position.
2. A tool of the character Specified, comprising a shank having a stem, a button on the stem and movable transversely thereof in every direction, a sleeve on the stem, means yieldably pressing` the sleeve against the button for temporarily holding the same in a given position and a clamp nut on the shank and adapted to engage the sleeve and move the same to permanently secure the button in the required adjusted position.
3. A device ot the character specified, comprising a shank having a stem in which is formed a threaded axial opening, a screw threaded into said axial opening, a button mounted on the screw and movable 'laterally thereon in every direction, a clamp sleeve on the stem and having its outer end in engagement with the button and a clamp nut on the shank and coacting with said sleeve to secure the button in the required adjusted position.-
4. A tool of the character specied, comprising a shank, a button supported by the shank and movable transversely thereof in every direction, a sleeve on the shank and having its outer end in contact with the button to retain it inpcsition, and a clamp nut mounted on the shank and coacting with the sleeve to fix the position of the button after the same has been adjusted.
5. A tool of the character specified, com-A its outer end, an expansible helical spring between the end of the stem and the inner tlange of the sleeve and a clamp nut mounted on the shank and coacting with the sleeve to secure the button in the adjusted position.. In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
