To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SILAsMGCLURma citizen of the United States, residing 'atBeaver Dannin the .county of Dodge, Stateof Wiscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for ()ven- Doors;
and I do hereby. declare the following to be a fulhclear, and.exactdescription of the illvention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relatesto' oven doors, and
has for its object the provision of an lIleX- pensive andxreliab'le latch or fastening which is wholly concealed between the door and the stove when the stove is closed, and which holds the door securely closed and is released by moving the'door bodily in the'plane of the door, and which includes means for releasing the door when undue stress is exerted on the doorin a direction to open the same. A further object of theinvention is toprovide afastening operated'without shock or jar which might injure the contents of the oven.

The knob l l is preferably the form of a rivet having an end 15 which is inserted in a suitable opening provided in an angle iron 16 which is a part of the stove frame. The end 15 has a shoulder which is adapted to bear against the outer surface of the stove, while the rivet is batteredto secure the knob 14 in place. The knob 14 preferably has outer and inner frusto- conical faces 17 and 18 and an intermediate cylindrical portion although the form of the knob may be varied. In closing the door pressure is applied to the handle 11 or the door given sufficient momentum to ensure that the lip above the opening 13 rides up the conical surface 17 anddrops behind the cylindrical portionof the knob, the door being slightly lifted on its hinges during this operation. A pull on the handle causes the lip to similarly ride up the conical surface 18 and drop on the other side of the cylindrical portion of the knob. An explosion within the oven opens the door exactly as if the handle had been pulled.
The simplicity and neatness of the catch is sufficiently obvious. It is easily manufac tured and applied and is, therefore, inexpensive; The oven door is securely held except when opened in the manner described and the parts are of a kind which are not easily damaged even by abusive treatment. These and other advantages of my invention insure its successful and satisfactory use in gas stoves and the like.
.LVarious changes may be made in the form, arrangement and construction of the parts Without departing from the invention or sacrificing any of its attendant advantages.
I claim: I
1. An improvement in stovescomprising an oven door hingedly supported on the stove to swing with respect thereto, and to move bodily in the plane of the door, and cooperating means on the stove and door to hold the door closed and to move the door bodily in its plane when opened or closed to engage and release the holding means.
2. An improvement in stoves comprising an oven door hingedly supported on the stove, and susceptible of bodily movement in the plane of the door, a knob on the stove,
and means secured on the inner face of the door and adapted to cooperate with the knob to' hold the door in closed position, said means and knob having engaging surfaces for moving the door bodily in the plane thereof when it is opened or closed, whereby pressure within the oven'will release the holding means.
3. An improvement in stoves comprising an oven door having a channel-shaped frame, which is hingedly supported on the stove and susceptible of bodily movement in the plane of the door, a knob on said stove having sloping inner and outer surfaces and a member concealed in said frame and adapted to cooperate with the knob to hold said ber concealed in saidframe and provided a with an opening to receive said knob and a lip which cooperates with said knob to hold said door in closed position and released by such bodily movement of the door.
5. An improvement in stoves comprising an oven door having a channel-shaped frame, which is hingedly supported on the stove and susceptible of bodily movement in the plane of the door, a knob on said stove having inner and outer frustoconical surfaces and a sheet metal member concealed in said frame and provided with an opening to receive said knob and a lip which cooperates with said knob to hold said door in closed position and released by such bodily movement of the door.
6. An improvement in stoves comprising a door, hinged to the stove to swing into and out of closed position and to move bodily with respect to the stove in the plane of the door toward and from the hinged coimection, means'between the stove and the door and concealed when the door is closed for holding the door closed, and releasable by the bodily movement of the door away from the hinged connection.
7. An improvement in stoves comprising a door hinged to the stoveto swing into and out of closed position and to move bodily with respect to the stove in the plane of the door toward and from the hinged connection, means between the stove and the door and concealed when the door is closed for holding the door closed and releasable'by the bodily movement of the door away from the hinged connection, and having means for releasing the door when undue pressure is exerted on the door in a direction tending to open the same.
8. An improvement in stoves comprising a door hinged to the stove to swing toward and from the stove and to move bodily in the .plane of the door toward and from the hinged connection, means for holding the door closed and released by the bodily movement of the door away from the hinged connection and having means forvso moving the door to release the holding means When pressure is exerted upon the door from within the stove.
