To all whomit may concern. Be it known that I, Rims Hens, aisubject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland,'residing at Smedley Street, Kapunda, State of South Australia, Commonwealth of-Australia, have invented a certain new anduseful Improved Method of and Means forBloclring Saddles for Steam'Boilers, (for whichl filed applications as follows: Commonwealth of Australia, 16,198, June 22, -l920; :llew Zealand, 4%083, July 1, 1920,)- Case B,. of'which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the of three specially constructed dies, one top and two'bottom ones, fitted with removable and interchangeable blocks,;the bottom die for the second operationbeing fitted also with two hydraulic rams. The saddle is shaped in two operations, in the first of which it is pressed to more or less resemble a pan with outwardly inclined sides and in the latter the shaping of the saddle is. completed by the aid of the two hydraulic rams.
In order that my invention be clearly understood I will describe the. same with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 respresents a blank of fiat plate from which the saddle is to be pressed.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 represent front, end and perspective views respectively of the finished saddle.
Fig. 5 shows a front view and Fig. 6 shows an end view of the top die B with the loose blocks D and E assembled for the firstoperation.
Fig. 7 is f-ont view of the bottom die (J used in the first operation showing on the right half an outside view, and on the left half a central section with the partially shaped saddle in place. 7 a
Fig. 8 is a cross section of the bottom die 0 and partially blocked saddle A on the line a b of Fig. 7. e
Fig. 9 is a front view showing in dotted lines the partially blocked plate Ain position between the second bottom die H. and the upper die B, the latter being fitted with theremovable blocks E and F, and ready for the finishing operation. The bolts which hold the hydraulic ram cases K in place are Out. .1 blocking from pieces of metal plate of saddles for;steam boilers. In particular it relates to the use.

are shown through which are passed"bolts (not shown in the drawings). which hold the two ram cases together and. to the-bloclr H; J .F 1g. 111s central sect-ion'showing the fully pressedsaddle with the two rains fully ex-f tended,-the top die B, lifted out, and-,th'eeremovable blocks F and E ready to be lifted The ton die as used "in. the first operation consists as shown in Flgsiti and. 6 of a main 1 part or. body B and removable blocks D and E, the blocks E beingheld to the body 13 by countersunk bolts ,W and the blocks D being held between them. The bottom die as used innthe first operation consists as shown in Figs; 7 and 8 of the main part or body C and removable blocks L and M. This bottom die'C is much wider at the top than the second bottom die'H and well rounded at the top to allow the metal to gather. 1 i
' Ablank A'of the shape shown in Fiefi'l is cut from flat steel plate- It isheated in a suitable furnace and then placed on top of the bottom die O. The top die B withthe removable blocks D and E as shown in Figs.
5 and 6 is then brought down and the plate is pressed into the bottom die, the plate being shaped as'shown by the heavy black section line on the left hand half of the figure and in dotted lines on the right hand half of the figure, also in heavy black section line in Fig. 8.
The second operation is to complete the blocking of the sides and to bring the ends of the plate to fitthe steam drums.
" This isperformedrin the die: H with the i aid of the two hydraulic rams 3, one at each end of the block and which are fastened to the block by means of two stout bolts passing 1 through the holesJ in the ram cases K, one
die. These bolts are not shown in the drawin s.
'The partly blocked platevA as itlis taken bolt at the front and oneat the back of'the from the die C is again placed'in the furnace in the'die H as shown in Figs. 9 and 11. The loose blocksE and F are secured in place on the top die 'B, the blocks F being substt,
and when of the required heat it is placed tuted for the blocks D shown in Fig. l, and the top die B is brought down and holds the blocks E and Band the partly pressed saddle in place as shown in Fig. 9. I
The hydraulic rams S fitted with their specially shaped heads T are then operated horizontally and press in the ends completing the shaping of the saddle A as shown by the heavy black section line and the dotted lines Fig. 11.
The rams S are then Withdrawn, the nuts removed from the bolts attaching the' blocks 1*) to the body B, the die B lifted, and the removable blocks E and F vthen lifted out, and the finished saddle lifted from the block H.
W'hat I claim is 1. T he method herein described for formin saddles for steam boilers, consisting in en jecting a plate to pressure between dies to give to the plate a pan-like shape; then placing the pan-shaped plate into a bottom die, introducing a top die into the same; and then applying pressure externally to the upper part of the sides of the pan-shaped plate to impart a curve formation thereto and complete the saddle.
2. In means for blocking saddles for steam boilers, a box-like bottom die, a removable block on the bottom of the die, said block having an irregular upper face and being of less Width and length than the bottom of said dle, and a vertical removable block at each end of the die, and top die having removable stantially the shape shown for a steam boiler a bottom die comprising a main part or body H, removable blocks M, two hydraulic rains S one at each end of the die; and two bolts one at the front and one-at the back For securing the rams to the die, substantially of the shape shown and as described;
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses this 25th day of July, 1921.
