STRAIGHTENING-PRESS AND METHOD OF OPERATING SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, CHARLES O. Wnrssnn- BURGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, Mahoning county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Straightening-Press and Method of Operating the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a straightening press embodying my invention.

My invention has relation to straightening presses and to a'novel method of operating the same.
Prior to my invention, in the operation of these presses it has been customary for the operator standing at the entering side of the press to 'feed through the pipe or piece to be straightened and during the passage of the piece straightening a portion of the length of the piece. Another operator at the other side of the press then eontinues the pice through the same die and completes the straightening operation. In
this method each of the two operators is idle substantially one-half of the time.
In accordance with my invention I provide a straightening press having a double die and two passes for the pieces to be straightened, so arranged that both operators may be straightening at the same time on pieces passing through the press. This cry greatly increases the output of each press.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 2 designates a straightening press which is generally of any usual or well known character, the vertically reciprocating die 3 of'which is driven in the usual manner from the gears 4. and 5. In accordance with my present invention I provide the press with two sets of passes formed by the two pairs of anvil Wheels 6 and 7 arranged in tandem. The reciprocating die 3 is made of double form so as to operate simultaneously upon two pieces A and B, one in each pass.
The operation will be readily understood.
The operator at the enterin side of the press feeds one of the pieces 5 through one of the passes of the press and straightens a portion thereof. The operator at the other side of the press then s'traightens the remaining portion. In the meantime, the first operator enters another piece B in the other pass. In this manner, two pieces may be simultaneously worked upon. By the old method, the operator at the entering side was compelled to wait, before entering a second piece, until the straightening of the first piece was completed, with a corresponding delay between operations by the second operator. My invention therefore enables the output of each machine to be very largely increased.
I claim:
1. The herein described method Which consists in entering a piece to be straightened in one pass of a straightening press and feeding through and strengthening a portion thereof from one side of the press and thereafter feeding through and straightening the remaining portion of the piece from the opposite side of the press, and while the first piece is being fed and straightened from the opposite side of the press, entering another piece to be straightened from the first side of the press in another and parallel pass, feeding and straightening the second piece from the first side of the press until the first piece is with drawn at the opposite side and then feeding and straightening the second piece from the opposite side of the press, and repeating the above described operations with subsequent pieces to be straightened; substantially as described.
2. A straightening press having two sets of anvil wheels arranged in tandem and forming two parallel passes through which two separate pieces to be straightened are adapted to be fed by operators working at opposite sides of the press, and a reciproeating bending die arranged to act simultaneously upon the pieces in both passes; substantially as described.
