, Be it known that 1, CHARLES BERNHARDT PETERSON, a citizen of "the United States, and a resident of Perryville, in the county of Cecil and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments 'in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
.The present invention relates in general to a driven fastening device such as nails, spikes and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, reliable in operation and easy and inexpensive to manufacture and which when in use is interlocked with the material with which it is associated whereby it is positively pre- Other objectsand advantages of the in construction, combination and'arrangement ofrparts which Wlll be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:'

Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention and more particularly to Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, the numeral 10 designates generally a master nail or spike which includes a shank 11 having a four cornered point 12 and a head 13. The head 13 extends laterally from the shank for a substantial distance and it carries adjacent its outer end a guide nail or spike 1 1. For this purpose the head 13 is provided with a transverse opening 13 the axis of which is parallel to the axis of FASTENING DEVICE.

. the master shank 10 and the upper end of the opening 13 is enlarged to provide a seat 13. The guide nail or spike 14 includes a shank 15 which snugly fits the opening 13 and a head 16 which is snugly received on the seat 13 so that when the shank 15 is received in the opening 13 and the head 16 is received on the seat 13 the guide nail 14 will extend in parallel relation to the master nail. The shank 15 is provided with a guide opening 15 which extendsobliquely through the shank 15 of the guide nail or spike l4 and which is aligned with the opening 17 provided in the shank 11 of the master spike 10.
A looking or cross spike'l8 is provided and has a head 19 wvhich: is received in a cavity 20 provided therefor in the head 13 of the master spike 10, and a shank 21 which extends through the guide opening 16 of the guide spike 1 1 and through the alined opening 17 of the shank of the master spike, the opening 17 thus constituting a seat or bearing for the shank of the locking spike. The cavity 20 includes an obliquely extending opening 20 which slid-ably and snugly receives the'shank 21 of the locking spike and a; seat 20 upon which the 'head 19 ofithe locking spike 18 is received, As shown'in Figure 1, the underside of the head 20 of the locking spike is a plane surface and snugly fits a similar plane surface of the seat 20 formed in the cavity 20 and these plane surfaces are arranged at right angles to the axis of the. shank of the spike and of the openings 16 and 17 thus providing for a complete nesting of these parts in assembly.
Latching mechanism is provided for'positively securing the locking spike in position, that is for interlocking it with the master spike. and for this purpose a cavity 23 is provided in the shank 11 of the master spike and communicates with the opening 17 thereof. A swinging latch 24 is pivotally mounted in the cavity by means of the pivot pin 25 and is urged out into locking position by means of a bowed or bent blade spring 26. The shank 21 of the locking spike is provided with a locking shoulder 27 which engages the swinging latch :24 in the assembly to bring about the interlocking of the master spike and the locking spike.
In practice, with this form of the invention the master spike is first driven into the wood or other material and the guide spike is then driven through its opening'in the head of the master spike. Whenithe guide spike is completely driven into the wood the interaction of the head of the guide spike and the seatprovided therefor'in the head of the master spike results inthe disposition of the guide spike in parallel relation to the master spike with its guide opening 16.

"It is to. be noted that the sh'ank2'l of the locking spike is guided by the openingQU? of the cavity 20 toinsure its entering the guide opening 16. \Vhen this occurs the head 19 ofthe locking, spike is completely nested in the cavity 20 provided therefor in the master spike and the head of the spike presents a continuous and uninterrupted surface.
The embodiment of thefinvention shown in Figure 6 is identical in all respects with that shown in Figures 1 to 5 andabove de- SCribed except that the head of the, master bolt is. provided with laterally extending lu s 291which are adapted to engage the openings alined with the obliquely extend-' ing opening of the headof the master spike, aflocking spike includinga shank extending through said alined openings, and a head received in the obliquely disposed seat, said shank of said master spike having a cavity therein communicating with the obliquely extending opening, a swinging latch pivotany mounted in sald cavity, and a springfor urging said latch to operative pos1tion, said shank of said locking bolt having a locking shoulder cooperable with said latch.
