I :roHN'ivr. eoonwiu, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA;
FIREPLACE DAMPER,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, JOHN M. Goonwm, a citizen of the United. States,.residing at San FI'EIHCISCO IIIthG county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fireplace Dampers, of which the following is a specification. v Y
This inventionrelates to improvements in fire placefdampers and has. particular ref: erence to an apparatus for the control of drafts-in open fire places.
One object of this invention is to provide a' damper for an open fire place which may be operated from thefront outside of the chimney hearth to adjust the-apparatus to various positions and retain the same in such positions when adjusted. .Another object of'this invention is to provide a damperof the character described which is simple in construction, economical in-manufacture, and in whichthe parts are so designed and. arranged that they can .be readily. put into operative condition and placed in the fire place by unskilled labor.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawlng'forming a part of this application'and' which like numerals are employed toldesignate like .parts throughout'the same,
. Figure 1 is a frontelevation-of an'open fire placeshowing. the apparatus iniposition,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line22 of Figure 3,
, Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a View in detail showing a fastening forming part of my invention.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown'a preferred embodi ment of my invention, the numeral 5 represents a fire place of any approved construction, which is provided'with a casing 6, to which casing is attached a fastening 'element 7'. In the passage way 8 of the chim ney 9 there are placed a pair of supporting strips 10, the strips being positioned par.- allel with the side walls of the chimney. Each support terminates in an up er bent end 11 and a bent end portion 12. y referring to Figure 2 it will be observed that the bent ends 11 are embedded in the walls of the'chimney, while the bent end portions 12 engage a rectangular frame 13.v
' .The construction of the frame .13 and its.
positionwithin the throat of the chimney is it will be noted that a pair-of connecting rods 14 are journaled inthe frame. Suit;
ably attached tQthe rods 14: area pair of ties.
archedplates 15 which are :pivotedto the J rods ltand contactv at their upper extre'mi Each of th'e'garched plates has pro-' vided' adjacent its upper extremity a stud or. eye bolt 16and adjacent its lowerextremity a stud or eye bolt :17 ISuspended .fromthe. .1
lower studs 17 is a cable 18 which supports a weight element; 19. This weight element is-positioned to lie directlybeneaththe con; tacting point of thearched plates 15, andby force of gravity willoalwaysb e disposed in 1 this position. I o 7 Connected to the upper studsor eye bolts attached to their free ends aring 21. This 75, 16 are twodetachable cables 20 which have i ring likewise connects with a;cable.22 which extends ,within the chi'mneyand is received by the fastening. element :7 and is-therelocked in a fixed position. As'shown-to advantage in-Figure 2, the apparatus -is}nor-'- mally in the fulllinepos'ition, 'andlupon dis engaging the cable 122. from the .fasteningj V element] theapparatus will-assume the dotted line positiontherein shown To those when the cable 22 is releasec lffromjthefastening element ;7., the weight'19-will tend to draw the lower extremities ofthe jpivoted arch plates 1I1\Vtt1dly-3.IlClWVlll thus tend to scribed, I intend to provide means whereby the interiorjof the chimney'can be reached.
To illustrate this feature I have shown I means of access, shown as a whole by the ,skilled in the art it willbeiapparent that I numeral 23, which means can be built inthe chimney.
necessary, for the supporting strips 10 can readily be made of a longer lengthof mate-' rial than that shown and the flange ele- It will be noted, however,, that this means of access is not absolutely ments can be made to fit in the sides of a chimney adjacent the top thereof. Thus the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 18, Application filed October 18, 1920. Serial No. 417,563. I
whole apparatus can be lowered into that type of chimney where this operation is deemed advisable.
Attention is called to the fact that the parts of this apparatus can be replaced if they are burned out or are injured and need replacement. In making the various parts a cheap class of material easily worked into shape and at the same time of a durable design, can be readily employed. .When the apparatus is placed within the chimney there is nothing visible except the fastening element 7 and the ends of the cable, which elements can be made of an ornamental character and thus add to the attractiveness of the attachment.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of th invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim p 1. In combination with a chimney, a damper comprising a frame, supporting strips having one end of each strip secured in the wallof said chimney and the opposite end of each strip engaging said frame,plates pivotally connected with said frame, a weight element connected with and suspended from the lower extremities of said plates, and means connected with and adapted to cause said plates to be moved into and out of engagementwith each other.
2. In combination with a chimney, a damper "comprising a rectangular frame, supporting strips having one end of each strip secured in the wall of said chimney and the opposite end embracing said frame, arched plates mounted within said frame and pivoted thereto, a weight element sus pended from said plates, a cable connected with and adapted to control the movement of said'plates and extending downward through the chimney to the front of the fire place, and means for receiving said cable to hold it in an adjusted position.
3. In combination with a chimney, a damper comprising a rectangular frame, supporting strips, each ofsaid strips terminating in a flanged portion at one end thereof and adapted to be fastened in the wall of said chimney and terminating at the opposite end thereof in a bent portion and adapted to embrace said frame, arched contacting plates mounted within and pivoted to said frame, a cable connecting said plates adjacent the lower extremities thereof'and suspended therefrom, a weight elementsecured to said chain and positioned beneath the contacting .point of said plates, and means connected with said plates adjacent the upper extremities thereof and extending downward and outward through the chimney for controlling the movement of said platesf 4. In combination with a chimney including a casing, a damper comprising a rectangular frame, supporting strips, each of said strips terminating in a flanged portion at one end thereof and adapted to be fastened in the wall of said chimney and terminating at the opposite end thereof in a bent'portion and'adapted toengag'e said frame. arched 'contaetin slates mounted within and pivoted to said frame, a chain connecting said plates adjacent the lower extremities thereof and suspended therefrom, a weight element secured to said cable and positioned beneath the contacting point of said plates, means connected with said plates adjacent the upper extremities thereof and extending T downward and outward through the chimney for controlling the movement of said plates, and'a fastening element secured to the Jfire place casing for receiving said chain to l10ld'ii3ll1 an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN Mooonwm.
