Description

A. H. INGLIS.
PUNCH. v
APPLICATION man DEC. 3o. 1920.
1,413,277. A PatentedAprJ1s,-1922.
gnou/Hoz f UNirEni STATES ALBERT H. INGLCIS, or SALTLAKE CITY, UTAH.A` y
Polvos;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT H.YINGLIS, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Salt Lake City. in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new yand useful Improvements in Punches, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists or a punch which is especially adapted for use in punching out washers, gaskets, etc.
An object of the invention is to provide a hand operated device of this character which may be conveniently manipulated to accurately cut .washers or gasketsY from a blank and to expeditiouslyremove the core after the washer or gasket has been punched.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character which will be rigid in construction andv composed of butfew parts so as to withstand the strain which will necessarily be imposed thereon even during normal operation of the device.
Theabove and other objects of this inven-v tion will be in part described and in part understood from the followingdescription or the present preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accomi panying drawings, wherein: y
Fig. l, is a vertical sectional view of a deviceconstructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3, is a plan and elevational view of the lcore remover for the punch, and
Figli, is a fragmentary sectional lView of a slightly modified form of the invention.
In the drawings, it will be apparent upon Vreference to Fig. 1, that the punch consists especially of an inner punch or body 4:, and an outer punch or body 5. These members are telescopically arranged, and are both preferably made of tool hardened steel, al-V though any other desiredk material may beused.
Theinner. punch 4; consists especially V'of a cylindrical body, the lower end of which iiares outwardly as indicated at 6, and then issues into arelatively large cylindrical yworking head 7, the free terminal of which is beveled to provide a workingV knife edge l8.
The outer punch is identical infconfiguration except that it is relatively larger so-as to be spaced from all parts of the outer periphery orl the inner punch 4. Moreover the upperY Specification of Letters'latent.

punched. It will be noted that 'the lower terminal of the cap 9 is normally spaced from the upper terminal of the outer punch l5 so Patented Apr.1's,1922. Application mea December 3o, 1920. ser-iai 110.434.959.'
which the washers or gaskets are beingf" that impact of an implement on the ftop 10 of vsaid cap will impart movement initially to g the inner punch'i.'k Continued exertion of vpressure upon said cap 9 will bring the latter '7o V into contact with the upper end ofthe outer punch 5, thereby'likewiseurging the latter into the work in an obvious manner. Y
In order to remove the core from theinner punch 4, after each operation of the latter, a
ycylindrical extractor 11 is provided which isY operable by' first removing the cap 9 and f then inserting the extractor through the bore of the inner'punch. `Or course, anyy other Y' desired type of extracting meansr may be used.
Changes may bev made in this device, espei cially in the proportion and arrangement of parts without departing fromthe spirit of Y the invention as coveredin the appended claims. For instance, if desired, the head ofthe outer punch may bebeveled from its outer periphery inwardly to provide an edge i i 12 as shown in Figure 4. In 4this waycer y tain classes of work may be better handled in a manner fwell known in the art. Y
What is claimed is:
LLA punch for washers 'and gaskets'including telescopically arranged inner and Kg tively longer than the other, a cap mounted 5 on the longer of said membersrand serv-ingv outerfpunch members-one of which is relaas an impact head, the-inner end' of saidcap fallingshort' of'theouter end Vof the shorterV :i l L' i parted to one of sai'dfmembers advance of f member whereby initial movementis the other.
2. A punch foruwashers,rgaskets,and the.: i
like, including Vinner and outer punch meml bers, the'inne'r of which is relatively. smaller than the-outerY member and extends appre ciably above' the latter, an impact. head mounted -upon'said innerVv member andV deon said Cap causing said outer member to be urged into the Work.
In testimony whereof I eHX my signature n presence of tWQ Witnesses.
` ALBERT H. INGLIS. Vtnesses: Y
MORGAN V. MOULTON, EARL WRIGHT.
