J NICKL RECOIL LOADING PISTOL.
APPLICATION HLED JUNE 16. 1921.
entree JOSE NIGEL, OF OBERNDORF-ON-THE-NECKAR, GERMANY, ASSEGNOR TO WAFFEN- FABRIK TIIAUSER, AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OF OBERNDORFON-THE-NEGKAR, GER- MANY.
RECOZL-LOADING PISTOL;
Application filed June 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnr NicnL, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at No. 8 of Hauptstrasse, in'the city of Oberndorf-on-the-Neckar, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recoil-Loading Pistols, (for which I have filed applications in Germany Apr. 20, 1916; France Mar. 80, 1921; Belgium Mar. 31, 1921; Spain Mar. 30, 1921; Sweden Mar. 29, 1921; Italy Mar. 29, 1921; Poland Jan. 17, 1920; Rumania Feb. 20, 1920; Austria Apr. 16, 1917 Turkey Sept. 10, 1918; Hungary May 2, 1917; CZecho-Slovakia Dec. 22, 1919,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hammer-actuated recoil-loading pistol, having a breechslide provided with grooves and adapted to slide and reciprocate on guiding ribs of the grip-stock after firing.
The object of the invention is to provide a weapon with means for preventing, in case of fracture of the breech-slide, the broken off rear portion of the said breech-slide from flying out and hurting the shooting person.
To this end one or both guiding ribs of the grip-stock and the corresponding groove or grooves of the breech-slide are stepped, recessed or shaped, as regards their dimensions, in a manner, that in case of fracture the broken off rear-portion of the breechslide is caught and retained within the pistol.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, to the details of construction of which the invention is not limited, however, the less so since only one groove and rib is shown to he stepped, while both grooves and ribs may be stepped, without thereby departing from the gist of the invention. 7
Fi ure 1 is a side view of the pistol with the handle broken off,
Figure 2 is a horizontal. longitudinal section on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a front view of the grip-stock and Figure 4 is a view of the breech-slide seen from below.
The grip-stock a has two lateral guiding ribs 7) and 0 adapted to co-act with corre sponding grooves e and 7 in the breech-slide d in order to guide the latter in its reciprocal movements, as usually in pistols of this type. In the shown embodiment of the in Specification of Letters Patent.

vention the front part of the guiding rib b denoted by the arrow-line m, Figure 1, is of less width than the rear part of the rib marked by the letter y, so that a step or shoulder g is formed serving as an abutment or stop for the breech-slide, provided to receive and co act with the rib Z) of the grip-stock, and said slide is cut out or shaped in its front part back to the point it to just have a sufiicient width to snugly embrace or enclose the rib Z), so that the breech-slide will be guided in its reciprocatory movements without any undue play. From said point it backwards the groove 6 is of increased width in conformity with the larger part :1 of the guiding rib b so that the breech-slide upon firing does not encounter any impediment in its backward travel. This backward movement of the breech-slide is limited by the returning spring connected with the front end thereof as is generally known in pistols of this kind.
In case of an accidental fracture of the breech-slide at firing the broken off rear part of the slide is released from the action of the returning spring and runs freely backwards, until the point it of the guiding groove 6 meets the step 9 of the guiding rib, whereby the run of the said broken off part is stopped and the part is prevented from flying out. The step it is provided at a point where the cross-sectional area of the breech-slide is such as to avert fracture.
It goes without saying that as already stated, the other guiding groove and the rib 0 may be stepped'in a similar manner, and the result aimed at by the invention may likewise be realized by reeessing or stepping the ribs and grooves in a direction rectangular to that shown in the illustrated embodiment of the invention without thereby de parting from the gist of my invention.
i hat I claim to secure by the Letters Patent is:
1. In a recoil-loading pistol, the combination of a barrel, a gripstock, a bieeclrslicle guided'thereon, a guiding rib on said gripstock having a stepped portion, and a guiding groove in said breech-slide having a correspondingly shaped portion or step to engage with the said step of the guiding rib in case of accidental fracture of the breech-slide at firing.
2. In a recoil-loading pistol, the combination of a barrel, grip-stock, a breech-slide thereon, two guiding ribs on said grip-stock having each a stepped portion, and two guiding grooves in said breech-slide having each a correspondingly shaped portion or step.
3. In a recoil-loading-pistol, the combination of a barrel, a grip-stock, a'breech-slide thereon, a guiding rib on said grip-stock having a portion recessed in regard to its depth to form a step, and a guiding groove in said breech-slide correspondingly shaped.
4. In a recoil-loading pistol, the combination of a barrel, a grip-stock, a breech-slide thereon, two guiding ribs on said grip-stock having each a portion recessed in regard to their depth to form steps, and two guiding grooves in said breech-slide shaped correspondingly.
5. In a recoll-loading pistol, the combina- 'tion of a barrel, a grip st0cl a breech-slide
