NITED STATES PATENT CFFICE. I
JAMES M. BAIRD, OF WHEELING WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND RICHARD STANLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,308, dated July 29, 1873 application filed November 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. BAIRD, of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain Improvements in Farm and Garden Hoes, of which the following is a description:
My invention consists in an improved article of manufacture in the form of an acuteangled socket or device for attaching hoeblades to handles, the part or arm of the same which is to be secured to and cover the end of the handle being of semi-tubular form, and provided with an inner projection or lug, and the other part being flat, or nearly so, to adapt it to be applied to the back of the hoe-blade, to which it is secured by means of rivets, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents my improved socket for the reception of the handle and blade of a hoe. Fig. 2 represents a hoe-blade attached to its handle by means of the socket and ring.
A is a clasping-socket of suitable size or shape for the reception of the handle H, and having within it a tooth-like projection, a, for retainin g the handle more securely in place. The outside is made to taper gradually from its juncture with the jointing-plate B to the extreme point K on the handle. B is thejointin g-plate for connecting the clasping-socket A and tool or implement together, and may be made of any size or shape, and attached atany angle desired. In some cases this plate may be dispensed with-as, for instance, where the claspingsocket A is cast on, or directly attached to, the tool or implement. O is a tightening-ferrule, made to correspond in size and shape with the taper of the clasping-socket A and the diameter of handle II.
In the construction of a hoe, the blade M is fastened to the jointing-plate B, as shown in the drawing; the handle H is laid in place in the clasping-socketA; the tightening ferrule is then put on and driven up toward the jointing-plate B, thus bringing the parts together, and causing the clasping-socket A to embrace firmly and retain securely the handle in place.
I disclaim the invention of a socket of tapering and semi-tubular form, provided with an inner lug or projection; but- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is As an improved article of manufacture, the acute-angled socket A, formed of a flat arm or shank having screw-holes, and a semi-tubular portion provided with an inner projection, a, whereby it is adapted to be applied to cover the end of a handle and connect it with a hoeblade in the manner specified.
JAMES M. BAIRD.
