Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BOYLE, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
lMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,257, dated July 29, 1873; application filed June 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BOYLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clamp for Attaching Textile or other Fabrics to Wood or Composition Soles, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of a shoe with my improved clamp for connecting the upper part to the sole, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a bottom view; and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of the same, showing the shape of the binding-clamp.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved clamping-connection of textile or other fabrics with hard and unyielding materials, as wood or composition soles, 860., so that shoes or other articles of manufacture may be produced quicker and cheaper by means of suitable machinery, and the hand-labor, hitherto necessary for such work, be dispensed with. My invention consists in grooving the wood sole or other material at the upper edge, and binding the fabric, by a suitably-shaped metallic clamp, firmly thereon, so that a strong and intimate connection of the parts is obtained.
In the drawing, A represents the sole, to which the textile or other fabric is to be attached. It is made of wood, composition, or other similar material, and provided, along its upper edge, with a groove, a, of semicircular or other shape. The upper part B of the boot, shoe, 850., is made of textile fabric, leather, rubber, or other similar material, and applied to the sole A by means of a clamp, U, which runs along the edge of the upper B, covering the same, and fitting accurately into groove a. Clamp G is produced either of wire of suitable thickness, which is formed into the required shape, or stamped of sheet metal. The upper part or head of clamp O is of round or other shape, corresponding to that of groove a, with slightly-tapering lower edge, as indicated in Fig.3, which serves to protect and bind the edge of upper B.
The clamp is made of such length and width that when applied to connect the sole A and upper B, by suitable machinery, it will accurately fit the groove of the sole the increased length required for the curved part being obtained by the gain in length along the circumference of the grooved or recessed part of the sole.
The clamp 0 forms asolid compact connection with parts A B without projecting beyond either, and combining it in a stronger, more even, and durable manner than if nails, rivets, or other connection had been applied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patout-- In combination with textile or other similar fabric B, and a grooved or recessed sole, A, the binding-clamp (J, for attaching the fabric firmly thereto, substantially as described.
' JOHN BOYLE.
