To all whom it may concern.-

'Beit known that I, GHAnLEs A. WVRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag Holders,

of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a bag holder, the principal object of my invention being to provide relatively simple and efiicient means for retaining in a compact and efficient mannor a numberof paper bags such as are ordinarily used by retail merchants as containers for goods delivered tov purchasers.

Further objects of my invention are to generally improve upon and simplify the (onstruction of the existing forms of bag holders; to provide a bag holding device that is capable of being easily and cheaply produced; and further, to provide a bag holder that'is adapted to be arranged in an upright position on a wall or counter and which will occupy relatively little space and hold a relatively large number of bags of different sizes.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of. parts that will be hereinafter more fully des-ribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring by numerals to the accompany ing drawings, which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, designates a shallow box-line structure open in front and at its lower end, and which serves as a support and container for the bags. This container occupies upright position on a wall or counter, and in order that differently sized bags may be positioned within the holder the box-like structure gradually increases in width toward its lower end. Arranged within the structure and suitably spaced apart are horizontally disposed partitions 11, and which arrangementdivides the space within the box-like structure into a series of substantially rectangular pockets 12.

'lhebag holding device contemplated by my invention is preferably formed from a single piece of wire of suitable length, the intermediate portion of which is bent to form a substantially U-shaped member comprising a horizontally disposed leg 13 and a pair of substantially parallel upright legs 14. At the upper ends of the legs 14 portions of the wire are bent to form short horizontally disposed coils 15, which latter constitute springs that tend to force the lower portion of the intermediate U-shaped member inwardly against the engaged bags when the device is in use and from these coiled spring portions 15 the wire from which the device is formed is extended rearwardly a short distance to form horizontally disposed legs 16. From the rear ends of the legs 16 the wire from which the device is formed is extended downwardly and inwardly to form inclined legs 17, the lower end of one of said legs being formed into a loop 18, and the terminal portion of the other leg extending through said loop and being bent at right angles to form a forwardly projecting horizontally disposed pron it the forward end of which is L is 7 pointed in order that it may be readily inserted through a number of bags.

To remove a bag it is only necessary to engage the lower end thereof and pull the same downwardly and outwardly, thereby tearing the upper endof the bag from the prong 19, and remaining bags in the particular pile from which the front bag has been removed will be retained in proper position upon the holder by the corresponding U-shaped member that is constantly urged toward the corresponding pile of bags by the coil springs 15.

Thus it will be seen that I h ave provided a relatively simple and practical form of bag holder that conveniently retains a relatively large number of bags within a comparatively small space, and said holder being of such construction as to be easily and cheaply produced.

It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved bag holder may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a bag holder, a box-like structure.

provided with a series of partitions that d vide the space within said structure into a series of pockets, and a bag-engaging and retaining member arranged in the upper portion of each pocket, which member is constructed from a single piece of wire bent to form a horizontally disposed prong, a U- shaped member arranged below and to the sides of said prong, springs at the upper ends of the legs of said U-shaped member and inverted L-sliaped members arranged between said springs and said prong, the hori- Zontally disposed legs of which inverted L- shaped members are secured to the under side of said partitions.

2. The. combination with a shallow boxlike structure, of a bag-engaging and retaining device positioned within the upper portion of said box-like structure, which engaging and retaining device is composed of a single piece of wire, the intermediate portions of which are bent to form a U-shaped bag-engaging member, portions of the wire at the ends of the vertical legs of said U- shaped member being formed into coil springs, the end portions of the section of wire being connected to each other, and secured to the under side of one of the partitions in said box-like structures, and one of said end portions being extended forwardly from the point of connection to form a horizontally disposed prong that projects through the U-shaped intermediate portion of the device.
