'' Application filed April 18,1921; Serial in. 462,361.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that L-Trrnononn E. DRoM- Cup-Leather Expanders, of which the following'is a specification, reference being had to" the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in cup leather expanders and has for an important object thereof the provision of an expansion ring for expanding the cup leather of pumps and the like, when the flanges thereof shall have become so worn in use that they become inefiicient.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character .which may be very cheaply produced and very readily applied.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is held in position by a follower plate employed for securing the cup leather to the piston.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a piston and cylinder showing a' leather expander constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a similar view, the expander being shown in elevation;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the follower plate and expander removed, the expander being shown in the position normally assumed thereby;
Figure 4 is a .similar view showing the expander in the position assumed when the same is placed within the flange of the cup leather;
- Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of F i re 3;
igure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fi re 4; and
igure 7 is a section on the-line7' 7 of Fi ure4.
eferri designates the piston rod of the usual manner. The characterL designates a cup leather which is held against the piston P by follower plate F, adjustable through the medium of a nut N upon the piston'rod R. The direction above'referred to is a common one employed in pumps of various descriptions as well as in air motors and similar devices.
' In accordance with my invention, the follower plate F is provided with a substantially radial extension 10 embodying an angular portion 11 spaced from the center of the follower plate F a distance substantially equal to the internal radius of the cup leather L. The numeral 12 designates a ring formed of spring metal centrally slotted, as at 13, to divide the same into a plurality of. sections 14 which are oppositely swaged, the alternate sections 14 being bent inwardly and outwardly to provide therebetween a space permitting the ready insertion of the angular portion 11 of the follower plate extension 10. When the ring 12 is applied in position. the end 11 ofthe extension is bent back upon the ring to prevent displacement thereof, the ring is thus held inwardly of the flange of the cup leather and expands against the inner surbetween the tabs 15 and the reduced end 16 is such as to permit the end 16 to slide readilya pump, and the piston thereo f mounted i for reciprocation within the cylinder C'in.
with relation to the'end bearing the tabs in order that the ring may at all times ,tendto move outwardly and thereby force the flange of the cup leather into engagement with the walls of the cylinder. I
From the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that I have constructed a on leather expander which is particularly we 1 adapted for the use for whlch it is intended b reason of the fact that it may be very clieaply produced and readily attached, and
will. at the same time perform its function.
It will furthermore be obvious that the construction of the same as hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change and modification" without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I accordingly do not limit nfyself to the specific structure thereof j exce t as hereinafter claimedh hat I claim is:
1. The combination with a piston rod and I piston, a cup leather having the convex face thereof abutting the piston through which said rod extends, and a clamping dlSk upon 7 the rod and abutting the concave face of the leather, of an inte ral radial extension formed upon the said disk and provided with. an angular (portion arranged adjacent the flange ofsai cup leather, and an "expansible split ring centrally secured to said angular portion, the ends of said ring overlap ing and being connected for relative s11 mg movement, said ring-abutting the im ner, face of the flange'of the cup leather to force the same outward. 1
2. The combination with a piston rod and piston, a cup leather having the convex face thereof abutting the piston through which said rod' extends, and afclamping disk upon, the rod and abutting the concave face of the leather, of an inte a1 radial extension formed upon saidod'isk andem'bodying an angular portion extending adjacent the inner surface of the flange of the cup leather,
' a split rin having slits formed therein approximate y centrall thereof, 'saidslits extending longitudina ly of the ring and 5 dividing the central portion thereof into a plurality of sections, saidsections being oppositely .bent to afford therebetween a space for the reception of the angular portion of said extension, the end of such angular port1on overlapping and engaging-the ring to prevent displacement thereof.
3. The combination with a piston rod and piston, a cup leather having the convex face thereof abutting the piston through which said rod extends, and a clamping disk upon the rod and abutting the concave face of the leather, of an integral radial extension formed upon said disk and embodying an angular portion extending adjacent the inner surface of the flange of the cup leather, a split'rin having slits formed therein approximate y centrally thereof, said slits extending longitudinally of the ring and dividin the central portion'thereof into a plura ity of sections, saidsections being oppositely bent to afford ,therebetween a space for the reception of the angular portion of said extension, the end'of such angular portion overlapping and engaging' the ring to prevent displacement thereof, the ends of said ring overlapping and being connected 1 together for relative sliding movement.
n testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my slgnature.
THEODORE E. DRUMMOND.
