Description

E. GASSET DPENING DEVIQE FOR TINS USED FOR PRESERVING FOOD.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 21. 1918- Patented Apr. 11, 1922 Inventor .ZiGwsseW, J
EDUARDO GASSET, or PONTEVEDRA, SPAIN;
OPENING- DEVIGE FOR TINS USED FOR PRESERVIN'G- FOOD.
Application filed December 21, 1918. Serial No. 267,881.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARDO Gassnr, a subject of the King of Spain, and residing at Alfonso XIII, J. 0. 2, Pontevedra, Spain,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in 5 Opening Devices for Tins Used for Preserving Foods, of which the following is a specification.
One of the most successful methods of closure for tins used for preserving foodstuds and the like is that of closure by the mechanical catch system in which the tins are hermetically sealed without the use of solder, by fitting an embossed part of the lid into the open end of the tin, interlocking the rim of the lid with the turned over portion of the top of the tin and turning the same over so as to lie against the sides of the tin. This system is known as the, sertissage. Difiiculties have been experienced in applying opening devices to tins so closed, but according to one method of opening which has been proposed, an annulargroove has been provided in the side of the embossed portion of the lid which fits into the open end of the tin, and a metal wire fitted into the groove with its ends projecting through a hole therein, the hole being sealed and the ends of the wire enclosed therein by a drop of solder.
It has been discovered, however, inthe manufacture of such tins, that this method of fixing the wire has disadvantages from the practical and economical point of view.
The object of this invention is to overcome these disadvantages and with this object in view the invention consists in soldering one end of the wire within the groove adjacent a hole in the groove through which the other end passes, sealing the said hole by a drop of solder, and allowing a sufficient length of wire to protrude through such hole as may be engaged by a door key, a fork, a stick, or any other suitable means whereby the wire can be rolled up and caused to cut through the groove in which it is resting. V
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is aperspective view of the tin with the lid fitted with my improved opening arrangement, ready to be placed in position to be sealed thereto. i
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the tin with the lid sealed down in position.
As is usual in the type of tin to which improvements are applied, the body of the tin a has the top edge of the sides turned over at right angles to the side to form afflange as shown at b. The lid 0 has. an embossed Specification of Letters Patent. Patntd A131. 11, 1922. I
portion (3 so shaped as to fit into the open top is of thertin, and is provided with a flange portion 6. An annular groove f is made-in the side of the, embossed portion d and in this groove a wire 9 is laid. the depth of the groove being suchas will allow of the wire fitting therein without projecting past the side portions of the embossed part (Z. A'ocording to this invention one end of the wire. 1s passed through a hole in the groove as is shown at it and the hole sealed with a drop of solder. T A sufficient length of wire as shown at a is left protruding as can be: I
engaged by a door key or other suitable means, say from 8 -to 12 centimeters, and'
the other end of the wire is soldered in the groove at a position adjacent to the hole It. The lid is sealed down inthe usual manner by interlocking the flange 6 with the flange 2) and bending the same over as is shown at y. WVh'en it is desired to open the tin, the the free end i of thevwire g is engaged by a door key or the like and 'wound'round the same, causing the said wire to out through the tin forming the groovef after which the embossed part at of the lid 0 maybe lifted up thus disclosing the contents of the tin.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
The combination of a tinfor preserving tin and turning same over in the well known manner, a groove formed by a recess in the 7 vertical side of the embossed portion of the lid, such recess being situated substantially centrally of such vertical side, and a ripping In testimony whereof I have signed my name in this specification.
EDUARDO GASSET.
