DRAFTING navron.
Specification of Letters ii'atent. Patented Apr; 11, 1922.
Application filed April 15, 1920. Serial No. 374,137.
' exact description.
The present invention relates to a device by which a member, such, for instance, as a straight edge, may be adjusted and secured such that the ends of the member may be adjusted in fixed relation to each other, and the member be moved upon a flat surface while maintaining the fixed relation of the member.
The invention is particularly adaptable to mounting a straight edge upon a drawing board such that the straight edge may be adjusted at various angular positions, and the straight edge be moved across the surface of the drawing board while maintaining the adjusted position of the stralght edge.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. t 1s a section on the line H of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 1s a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings-1 represents a plane surfaced object, such as a drawing board. A straight edge is represented at 2.
Mounted upon the drawing board 1 are four contact members 3, 4, 5 and 6, which in the instance assume the form of pulleys, such as shown in Fig. 5. Each pulley is mounted upon a base such as indicated at 7, which is secured to the drawing board in any desired manner as by screws. The pin 8 upon which the pulley is mounted is fastened in the base 7 at one end, and a bridge member 9 has an opening through which the pin extends, the top of the pin having a head as clearly shown in the drawing. The bridge has side flanges which bear upon the base and serve'as a partial housing for the pulley and a guide for a cable to which reference will later be made.
The contact members 3 to 6 inclusive may be described as arranged to form two pairs, the contacts 3 and 4 forming one. pair and the contacts 5 and 6 forming a second pair.
The contacts in each pair are equally spaced; This, however, is not so important,- but it will be noted that a line drawn through the contacts 3 and 4 is parallel with the line drawn through the Contacts 5 and 6.
While the arrangement of the contacts, as shown, as at the corners of a rectangle, this particular arrangement is not essential'.
The movable member, or straight edge has two contact members 10 and 11, which are mounted thereon-at places adjacent the opposite ends. Each of'the contact members mentioned comprises a pulley, suchLas indicated at 12 (Fig. 4) which pulley is pro:
vided with two distinct grooves. The pulley is mounted on a pin 13,-whichfatone end is fastened into a base 14,-, which is secured on to the straight edge 2. r
A cap member 15 has a centralopening, through whichfthe pin 13. extendsfthe pin having a head which lies outside 'ofthe cap.
This cap member has depending flanges, one of whlch 15 indicated at 16, which flanges engage with plate 14 and form'guides for the cable, later to be described.
Adjacent each contact 10 and 11 is a fastening means such as indicated at 17 and 18 This fastening means i's adapted to rc- V ceive and secure the cable as later described. In the present instance each fastening means, comprises a slotted threaded stem 19 (Fig. 4) which receives a nut 20. V
A cable 21 is arranged to engagewiththe various contact members 3 to '6, and 10 and 11. This cable is so arranged that at or adjacent the ends of the movable member 2,
the strands of the cable are parallel and the 1 cable as it crosses over between contacts 10 and 11 crosses over.
The cable is secured to the movable mem-.
her 2 by means of the fastening means '17 and 18. In the present instance we may for purposes of description assume that the cable starts at securing member 17; it passes around contact 5; thence around contact 10; then around contact 11'; then around contact 4 and through securing member 18,.then
around contact 3, back to contact 11, crosses I over the other portion of the cable which.
has been previously described as extending between contacts 10 "and 11, then around contact 10, around contact 6 and to securing member 17,
7 As will appear thecable is freeto move around all of the contact members with which it engages, but is secured to the fastening members 17 and'18. Hence'the movable member may readily be moved and in so doing the member 2 moves as a unit and all parts move equally ano uniformly.
The movable member 2 may be adjusted to an angular position. F or instance, the securing member 18 may be loosened, and the end of member 2 may be moved, up or down and when the desired angular position is obtained, the securing member 18 may be tightened.
After such adjustment, the member 2, When moved still maintains its adjusted position and the edges of the member 2 assume parallel positions as the member 2 is moved.
The applicability of the device to drawing tables or boards, will at once be apparent.
Having described my inventon, I claim-- 1. A device of the character described, comprising a supporting member having a plane surface. a movable membe symmetrically arranged pulleys mounted upon the supporting member, spaced pulleys mounted on the, movable member, cable means cooperating with the said pulleys, and means for securing the cable means With respect to the movable member whereby the ends ot the movable member are held in fixed relation to each other as the movable member is moved.
2. i. device of the character described, comprising a supporting member having a plane surface, a movable member, lZWO pairs of spaced contact members mounted on the supporting member, a pair of sald contact members lying on each side of the movable member, contact members on the movable member, a cable reeved around the said contact members, means for fastening said cable at tWO points on said movable member whereby the ends of the movable member are held in fixed relation to each other as the movable member is moved.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a supporting member having a plane surface, a movable membeiptxvo pairs of contact members mounted on the supporting member the contacts in each pair being equally spaced and lying upon opposignature.
