WILLIAM JAMES MILLER, OF GOOSE CREEK, TEXAS.

arness.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. lllinrinn,
- a citizen of the United States, residing at Goose Creek, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Calipers, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in calipers, the principal object of the invention being to provide one arm of the calipers with a steel tape so arranged that the distance between the ends of the arms can be measured by said tape.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the tape can be carried in rolled condition in the calipers when not in use.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention showing the tape in partly extended position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the tape carrying arm of the calipers.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of F 1gure 1.
Figures 4- and 5 are detail views.
Figure 6 is a sectional view through that part of the hollow arm which carries the spool.
In these views A indicates the calipers which are constructed in the more ordinary manner excepting that one arm is madeof considerable width and is provided with a chamber 1 intermediate its ends and a slot 2 which extends from the chamber through the free end of the arm. Side plates 3 are secured to the arm by the screws 4, these plates covering the chamber and the major portion of the slot. A spool 5 1s journaled in chamber 1 by means of the screw bolt 6 passing through the spool and the plates 3. This spool supports the tape 7 whlch is preferably made of steel and said tape is kept wound upon the spool by means of the coil spring 8. The free end of the Specification. of Letters Patent.

tape is provided with a part 9 which may be welded thereto and which acts as a thumb hold and as a stop for engaging the end of the calipers arm for preventing the outer part of the tape from being drawn through the slot and upon the spool. By placing the thumb against this projecting part the tape can be unwound from the spool and drawn through the slot.
Ialso provide means for holding the tape in its adjusted position or partly withdrawn from the slot, such means consisting of a thumb screw 10 rotatably mounted in the small end of the calipers adjacent the slot and having a fiat part 11 which can be brought in alignment with one wall of the slot so as to permit free movement of the tape but when the screw is turned the rounded part will press the tape against the upper wall of the slot and thus clamp the same and prevent the spring spool from drawing the tape inwardly.
It will thus be seen that the tape can be used in measuring the distancesbetween the ends of the calipers arms, the thumb screw 10 holding the tape in its adjusted position so that the user can readily read the figures on the tape. Of course the tape can be used for measuring other distances if desired.
I prefer to use a tape marked as indicated in Figure 5 which shows the central part of the tape left blank but with the lines separating the inches passing entirely across the face of the tape. This blank central space is engaged by the end of the calipers arm.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. Calipers having pivoted arms, one of which is hollow, a spool located in said hollow arm and a graduated tape carried by the spool and adjustable toward the free end of the other arm and through the free end of the hollow arm.
2. Calipers having pivoted arms, one of which is hollow, a spring actuated spool in the spool adjustable toward. the free end of the other arm and through the free end of the hollow arm. 1 3. Calipers having pivoted arms, one of 5 which is provided with a chamber and a i longitudinally extending slot, said slot passing through the free end of the arm, side plates for closing said chamber and'slot, a
spring actuated spool in said chamber, a graduated tape carried by the spool and 10 passing through the slot, a stop at the free end of the tape for engaging the end of the arm and means for holding the tape in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si ature.
