DAVID ZAIDEN, EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
MECHANICAL GEESY-TA DOLL.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID ZAIDEN, a citizen of Russia. residing at East Orange, in
the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Mechanical Geisha Dolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and "to characters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in dolls; and the invention has reference, more particularly to a novel mechanical doll representing a Japanese geisha and adapted to perform the movements of fanning itself, while at the same time revolving about on its feet.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel construction of doll with which is combined a mechanical motor device mounted in a novelrnanner in connection therewith whereby an arm holding a fan is caused to oscillate, and whereby the vibrations of the mechanism are so transmitted to the legs and feet of the doll as to cause a shifting movement of the same upon the surface on which the doll stands, such shifting movement tending to cause the doll to revolve around its vertical axis.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement and construction of the feet portions of the doll, whereby the doll receives a peculiar three point support which is an. important factor in producing.
the above mentioned revolving movement of the (loll.
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time niore'particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from thefollowing detailed description of the same.
With the objects of the present invention in vieuz the same consists. primarily in the novel constructimi of mechanical doll hereil'iafter described: and. furthermore, the invention consists in the novel arran units and combinations of the various devices and parts. as well as in the details of the con- .structionthereof, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 470,284.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a front elevation or face view of the novel doll provided with its clothing in place; and Figure 2 is a part front'elevation and part transverse longitudinal section of the doll, with its clothing removedtherefrom, and showing the internal operative mechanism.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the body of the doll, which may be made of any suitable material, such as sheet metal, celluloid, papier mache or other composition, and which. is provided with a hollow or chamberedinterior Thebody 1 is provided at its upper end with a neclcportion 3 upon which is fixed the head portion 4. The body 1 is pro vided at its lower end with leg receiving sockets or openings 5. i ther provided at one side or shoulder 6 of its upper portion with an outwardly projecting upper arm portion 7 integrally and rigidly formed therewith, said upper arm portion 7 is hollow and open on its under side. the,
same giving the effect of a raised arm por# tion. At the opposite side or shoulder S of the body 1 such an upper arm portion is omitted.
The body 1 is fur- V The reference character 9 indicates the leg portions of the doll, the upper ends of which are inserted into the sockets or openings 5, and secured at one sideto the body by screws 10, or other suitable fastening means. The leg portions 9 are provided respectively with the respective foot portions l1 and 12. I The foot portion 11 is provided with a heel portion and toe portion 14 which are horizontally alined so as to each contact with the surface upon which the doll is stood. The
foot portion 1:2 is also provided with a heel portion 15 and toe portion 16. The heel portion 15 is horizontally alined with the heel portion 13 and toe portion 14 so as to cont-art with the supporting surface, but the toe portion 16 is raised above the'horizontal plane of the supporting surface engaging points of the heel portions 13 and 15 and the toe portion 1%. as indicated by the dotted line IE so that said toe portion 16 does not engage the supporting surface upon which I the doll is stood, and so that the doll is supframe 17, said arbor projecting rearwardly through andexteriorly of the body of the doll so as to receive the attachment of an ex ternally disposed winding key (not shown). The reference character 21 indicates a spirally wound motor spring, the inner 'end of which is secured to said arbor 20, while the outer end 22 is anchored upon or fixed to .a cross bar 23 which. forms a part of the frame 17. J ournaled upon said arbor 20 is a driving gear 24 adapted to be rotated by said motor spring by any suitable arrange- Connected with said escapement dog or anment commonl employed in clock spring movements. ournaled in said frame 17 above said motor spring is a spindle 25 upon which is fixed a pinion 26, which meshes with and is driven by said driving gear 24. Also fixed on said spindle 25 is an intermediate gear 27. Journaled in said frame 17 above said spindle 25 is another spindle 28 upon which is fixed a pinion 29 adapted to mesh with and be driven by said intermediate gear 27. Fixed on said spindle 28 is a toothed escapement wheel 30. J ournaled in said frame 17 above said spindle 28 is an arbor 31 upon which is fixed an escapement dog or anchor 32, the latter having an impulse pallet 33 at one end, and a locking pallet 34 at the other end, which alternately cooperate with said t'oothedl escapement wheel 30.
chor 32, so as to be oscillated by the escapement mechanism, is a transverse rocking member 35, one end portion 36 of which is bent upwardly and outwardl to project outwardly through and beneatli said upper arm portion 7 of the body 1. The outer extremity 37 of said end portion 36 is doubled upon itself to extend inwardly across the. outer front side of the body 1, and upon this extremity 37 is fixed a fore'arm portion 38. Said extremity 37 terminates at the hand member 39 of said fore-ann portion 38, and has suitably secured thereto a fan member 40, attached in such a manner that the same appears to be held by said band member The opposite end portion 41 of said rocking member 35 is bent upwardly and inwardly, and secured to the free end thereof is a weight 42.
The doll body is clothed in a ltimona-like garment 43 having sleeves 44. One of said sleeves extends over the movable fore-arm portion 38. Secured within the opposite sleeve is a fore-arm portion 45 having a hand member 46 which projects outwardly from the sleeve end.
I The operation of the doll, constructed as above described, is as follows The motor spring 21 is wound up, thus storing its energy. The unwinding of the motor spring drives the driving gear 24, which imparts, through the intermediate train of pinions and gear 26, 27 and 29, a rotative movement to the escapement wheel 30. The rotation of the escapement wheel 30 acts upon. the escapement dog or anchor 32 to produce an oscillation of the same, whereby the rocking member 35 is in turn oscillated. The rocking movement or oscillation of said rocking member produces an up and down swinging movement of the fore-arm portion 38 and the associated fan member 40, whereby the geisha doll simulates the movements of fanning itself with the latter. The oscillations of said forearm portion 38 and the associated fan member 40 are counter-balanced by the oscillation of the weight 42 carried by the opposite end of said rocking member.
The operation of the escapement mechanism causes an oscillation. of said weight 42 producing vibrations which are transmitted through the bracket 18, and their extensions 19, to the leg members 9. By reason of the above described three point contact support of the doll afforded by the arrangement of the feet portions 11 and 12, the foot portion 12, which has only its heel portion 15 in engagement with. the supporting surface upon which the doll stands, offers less re sistance to movement than does the foot portion 11, which has both its heel portion 13 and toe-portion 14 in engagement with the said supporting surface; consequently there is a tendency of the foot portion 12 to slidingly displace itself under the influence of said vibration with the result that the doll tends to turn around on its vertical axis producing a slow rotative movement which simulates to a very pleasing degree a slow mincing step by step movement in imitation of a slow revolving dance movement. The described bodily rotation of the doll, coupled with the arm and. fan movement produces a very attractive and realistic effect, whereby the doll seems to rform in a manner well befitting the J iianese geisha it is intended to simulate.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations oft-he various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing-from the scope of this invention as set forth in the foregoingspecification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, Ido not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as: described in said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
