UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN J. sPEAeUE, 0F YoUNesTo'vvN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SASH-FASTENERS AND WEATHER-STRIPS.
j Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,178, dated J nly 22, 1873 application led June 10, 1673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. SPRAGUE, of Youngstown, in the county ot' Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Window- Sash Holder, Lock, and Weather-Strip, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to devices for looking Window-sash, holding it in any desired place, and rendering it weather-tight; and consists in the combination of a spring sash-holding Weather-strip and pivoted locking device in a single spring st-rip, as will be hereafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a window-frame and sash, showing in section the bolt When the sash is locked; and Fig. 2 represents a view of the sash knuckle-joint, locking and holding strip, detached.
In the edge of the sash A is inserted a weather-strip, B, which rests upon springs b placed to receive it, and is secured by screws c with their heads against shouldered sockets' d in the strip, so that its movement outward and inward, as regards the sash and windowframe, may be regulated. This strip B is covered upon its acting face with leather e glued thereon, and makes a perfect Weather-strip, and, by its elastic movement, permits the sash to be held at any desired point. A section or knuckle piece ot' this strip is pivoted near one end and forms -the locking-bolt O, and may be of metal or wood. A spiral spring, f, tends to constantly press this knuckle-bolt section outward, and when opposite to arecess, D, in the Window-frame the action of the spring f forces the end ot' the pivoted section G into said recess and rmly locks the sash.
When it is desired to raise the sash a hook or thumb lever, E, of the stopispressed down- Ward, which contracts the spring f and Withdraws the bolt-point from its recess. The knuckle section O forms a continuation of the holdin g-strip B, and, being also faced with leather, presses against the Window frame, and, by its spring f, also serves, with the strip, to hold the sash when open.
This holding locking-strip can also be applied to the upper sash by jointing the knuckle section to the lower end of the strip, the design of my invention being to render the holding Weather-strip also the locking device for the sash.
Having described my invention, I claim-4 The combination ofthe spring-knuckle section stop or locking device C, and its handle E with the spring weather-holding sash-strip B, as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 26th day ot' May, A. D. 187 3.
EDWIN J. SPRAGUE.
