SHEET-METAL BOX.
To f/,H 'LU/tahiti may concer/t.'
Be it known that I, F Rnnnmox lVns'rnn- Eox, a citizen of the United States oi' America, a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improve-ments in Sheet-Metal Boxes, of which the `following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a sheet metal box of the kind commonly used for holding such commodities as crackers and small cakes, and has for its objects the provision in a box of this kind ot a double acting hinge connecting the lid to the body of the box and permitting the lid to be suspended back of the rear wall ot' the box body.y Hinges ol this kind are not new, an example being found in Letters Patent No. 783,003, issued to me February 2l, 1905, but it is the object of the present invention to furnish a double acting hinge which is inexpensive to manufacture, is detachable from the box body, and the parts of which are not liable to become adhered due to corrosion. A further object of the invention is to so construct such a sheet metal box as to avoid protrusion of its lid or hinge elements beyond the rear wall of the box body.
Fig. I is a perspective of my sheet metal box with its lid closed.
Fig. II is a side elevation of the box with the lid open.
Fig. III is an enlarged vertical cross section through the box body with the lid shown open in elevation.
Fig. IV is a vertical section taken on line IV-IV, Fig. III.
The body A of my sheet metal box maybe in the main of any ordinary or usual structure, said body comprising side walls l and a rear wall 2. The rear wall is offset inwardly at its upper end to provide an upper oiset wall member 3 lying in front of the plane occupied by the main portion oi" said rear wall, said offset wall member 3 containing hinge-receiving apertures el which are preferably located partly in the vertical portion of said member 3 and partly in the web between said member 3 and the main portion of the rear wall.
B designates the lid of my box, preferably formed with front and side flanges but lacking a liange at its rear edge. At the rear edge of said lid are hinge pintles 5, said pin- Specieaton of Letters Patent.
Application led. .Tune 27, 1919; Serial No. 307,165.
t'les being 1ne'ferably portions ot a border wire extending along the margin of the box lid. Hinge leaves 6, loosely fitted to said pintles 5, extend through the apertures i in the rear wall 2 of the box body A. Said hinge leaves are preferably made of pieces of sheet metal folded and formed at their ends into loops which constitute eyes 7 and 8 the eyes 7 receiving the pintles 5. The eyes 8 of the hinge leaves 6 occupy positions within the box body A and receive a pivot rod 9, preferably extending substantially the entire width of the box in front of the upper apertured rear wall member 3. Said pivot rod is preferably inserted into the box body through an opening 1fL in one of the box body side walls (see Figs. II and III), and a'lter insertion through the eyes 8 of the hinge leaves 6 may be bent, as seen in Fig. II, to prevent endwise movement of the pivot rod through said opening l, in order that the rod be maintained in eyes 8. lVhen it is desired to detach the lid B from the body of the box, it may be readily separated by rebending the pivot rod 9 and withdraw ing it through the opening la.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings, that the lid of my box may, when opened, be lowered to a position back of the rear wall of the box body, due to the hinge leaves turning on the pivot rod 9, and the box lid thereafter turning on the hinge leaves until it hangs suspended back of the box body. It will be apparent that the eyes ofthe hinge leaves 6 may, in the herein described construction, be sufficiently larger than the pivot members extending therethrough to provide very loose tit between said parts, and that therefore no such corrosion is likely to occur on said parts as will cause the hinge members to adhere to each other.
The forwardly oEset wall member 3 at the upper end ot the rear wall of box provides a space back of said member which lies in front of the main vertical plane occupied by the rear wall beneath said space, and into which the hinge leaves 6 enter so that they will not protrude beyond the rear wall when the box lid is closed. This is important in that it so locates the hinges as to prevent damage thereto by striking against otherboxes or objects.
I claim:
l. A sheet metal box comprising a body ico ` Within the box body, and a lid having an apertured well, hinge lea-ves extending through the apertures 1n seid body wall, said hinge leaves havingv eyes" interior of the box body and eyeslocated ex-` of the box body, a pivot rod ex-` teriorly tending through the eyes of the hinge leaves pivoted to the eyes of said hinge leaves located exteriorly of the box body.
2. A sheet metal box comprising a rear wall having a forwardly offset upper member, 'a lid for closing said box body, and hinges connect-ing said lid to said box body at the location .osaid 'offset member, said offset member permitting forward move- 15 FREDERICK WESTERBECK.
