This core was hitherto of such shape that it'pushed at its rotation a quantity of clay intothe cavity made by itself and formed in this manner the closing wall.
Besides the brick-press is provided with a contrivance as to avoid the formation of a vacuum. This contrivance usually consisted of a tongue (prickle) whichmade a hole in the front-wall of the brick so that .air could enter the interior of the hollow brick from outside through the formed front-wall.
As to avoiding the vacuum all the brickpresses for the manufacture of hollow bricks;
closed on all sides operate-in the same way, without any difference whether the manufacture 0f the brick ensued by discharging the core from the vertical to the horizontal position or by drawing back the core from the mouth-piece or by damming up the clay mass by means of slide-valves, (bolts). In all these cases it was necessary to make holes in the closing walls of the hollow brick to give access to the air into the interior of the brick.
On account of these holes in the closing walls the bricks made in this Way were only to be used as quarry-stones for sp'andrel,

Both methods of supplying air can be combined, and also it is possible to use a vertical shaft instead of a horizontal one, particularly when several cores are arranged one over the other.
